Choose a folding treadmill if you need to reclaim floor space and its folded dimensions fit your storage area. Choose a non-folding treadmill if it can stay set up and you want a substantial running platform for frequent or demanding workouts. The label alone does not decide which is better: compare the exact model’s fit, specifications, and handling with the people and workouts it will serve.
What changes when a treadmill folds?
A folding treadmill lets you raise or fold its deck for storage, but the mechanism does not make every model compact. A non-folding treadmill stays in its operating position. It may suit a room where the machine can remain set up, but it can still be heavy to move.
Consumer Reports describes non-folding treadmills as generally heavier, with sturdier decks and larger running surfaces. That is a general comparison, not a guarantee about any particular model: higher-end folding treadmills can also have longer decks. How should you choose between them?
Start with your workouts and users
List who will use the treadmill and whether the main activity will be walking, jogging, regular running, or incline training. NordicTrack’s 2026 buying guide identifies motor power, belt size, incline range, cushioning, and weight capacity as specifications to consider for daily use. Its rough continuous-horsepower guidance is about 2.0 CHP for walking, 2.5 CHP for jogging, and 3.0 CHP or higher for regular running. Match the belt to the stride
NordicTrack says a 55-inch belt works for walking and recommends 58–60 inches or longer for running. It also advises taller users and people with longer strides to prioritize belt length. Treat those measurements as NordicTrack’s guidance, not a universal fit rule: consider the intended user and, if possible, try the running surface before buying. Measure both operating and storage space
Check the treadmill’s exact open and folded length, width, and height. Measure the room around it in use, the ceiling clearance, and the space where it will be stored. Also check whether it can pass through delivery routes, hallways, and doorways. A folded treadmill can still take substantial floor space or need more height than expected. Consider who will handle the deck
Folding mechanisms differ: latches, assistance systems, wheel counts, and the movement needed to raise or lower a deck are model-specific. If you are considering a folding design, review its manual and make sure the people who will use it can follow the lifting, locking, and lowering instructions. A non-folding model avoids that deck-folding step, but moving it may still be difficult.
When is a non-folding treadmill a better fit?
Consider a non-folding design if you have room to leave the treadmill assembled and your household expects frequent, long-distance, or high-speed running. Its larger running surface and sturdier deck may be useful, but confirm the actual belt dimensions, frame, motor, incline, and user capacity of the model. The design category alone cannot establish that it will suit a particular runner.

What should you check on a folding treadmill?
Test the folding and locking steps
Find out how the deck is lifted, secured, released, and lowered. Matrix advises ensuring the latch is fully engaged before cleaning around, moving, or leaving the treadmill. Follow the model’s moving and wheel instructions
Horizon says to unplug its treadmill before moving it and, on applicable four-wheel models, to lock both rear wheel locks before use. Check reach and upkeep
Incline can change how controls feel to reach, and designs differ. Matrix says its non-folding design moves the console mast with the deck, while on some folding designs the console and handlebars stay stationary as the deck inclines. Check the machine at the incline you expect to use. Also read the owner’s manual for folding-specific maintenance and the exact warranty terms for the frame, motor, parts, and labor.
