Foldable phones add a moving hinge and a flexible inner screen, so durability depends on more than a conventional phone’s casing. A visible or tactile crease is normal and does not by itself mean the screen is failing. Fold-count figures are manufacturer test claims, not a promised lifespan, and an IP rating describes limited test conditions—not unrestricted protection from water or dust.
What makes a foldable phone different
A foldable’s inner display bends at a designed fold area, while the hinge guides that movement. Both are model-specific components subject to repeated use and exposure. That adds care considerations absent from a typical rigid-screen phone, but it does not mean every foldable will fail within a predictable period.
What fold-cycle claims do—and don’t—tell you
Samsung’s UK buying guide says the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 are certified for up to 200,000 folds. This is Samsung’s published certification figure for those named models, not an independent comparison, a guarantee, or a promise that an individual phone will last a set number of years. Actual use, environmental conditions, and repair history vary.
Samsung says the Fold7’s restructured Armor FlexHinge uses a multi-rail design intended to distribute stress and reduce visible creasing. That explains the manufacturer’s design rationale; it does not independently establish lower failure rates or a specific service life. Samsung Global Newsroom’s Fold7 announcement describes the hinge design, and Samsung’s UK foldable-screen guide gives the fold-cycle figure.

Is a crease a sign of screen damage?
Not on its own. A foldable display bends repeatedly at its fold area, so a crease may be visible or feelable without proving that the screen is damaged. Visibility varies with the model, lighting, and viewing angle. In a hands-on Galaxy Z Fold7 review, TechRadar described a minimal crease that could be seen at some angles and was barely perceptible to touch; that is an observation about that model, not a controlled durability test or a prediction of screen life.
Pay attention to changes in the screen’s behavior or appearance rather than treating the crease alone as a failure indicator. If something changes, consult the manufacturer’s support guidance for the exact model.

Handle the inner-screen protector by model
Samsung says its foldables’ main screen comes with a specially designed pre-installed screen protector. Follow the model-specific support instructions if it is damaged or starts lifting, and seek appropriate service. That guidance does not establish that a generic protector will fit or that removing the factory protector yourself is safe for every model.
What water and dust ratings mean
The Galaxy Z Fold7 is rated IP48. Samsung’s product environmental report describes this rating under IEC 60529 and specifies controlled laboratory submersion in freshwater up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes. The figure describes that test condition; it does not make the phone “waterproof” or establish equivalent resistance to salt water, other liquids, high-pressure jets, a damaged device, or dusty conditions. Samsung warns that resistance is not permanent and may diminish with normal wear and tear. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 Product Environmental Report details the test context.

Motorola’s Razr Fold hardware guidance likewise says resistance was tested under controlled laboratory conditions and decreases with normal wear. Motorola specifically advises avoiding dust exposure because dust can reduce hinge life and damage the display. For the Fold7, TechRadar’s hands-on review also recommends keeping the phone away from dust and sand despite its IP48 rating; that practical advice is a review observation, separate from the laboratory classification.
Samsung Support puts its wear caveat plainly: “Water resistance of device is not permanent and may diminish over time because of normal wear and tear.” The statement appears in Samsung’s Galaxy foldable care guidance.

How to care for a foldable
- Keep sand and fine debris away from the hinge and inner display; Motorola warns that dust can reduce hinge life and damage the display on the Razr Fold.
- Follow the exact model’s manual and support instructions for screen cleaning and protector handling.
- Treat an IP rating as a defined test classification, not permission for exposure to every liquid or dusty environment.
- Use a compatible protective case for exterior protection only. A case does not establish protection for the inner screen or hinge, change the phone’s IP rating, or guarantee survival in a drop.
- Before buying, check the model’s screen and hinge repair options, eligibility, and quoted cost in your country. Availability and terms vary by model and region; Samsung says same-day screen repair may be available for eligible devices in select areas.
How to judge long-term reliability before buying
There is no reliable cross-brand failure-rate ranking established by the available model-specific claims and guidance. To compare foldables, check the same details for each exact model rather than treating a fold count or IP rating as a complete durability score:
- Hinge: What fold-cycle claim is published, and is it a manufacturer certification or independent evidence?
- Inner screen: What is known about crease visibility, and what does the manufacturer say about the pre-installed protector?
- Ingress rating: What is the exact IP rating and its stated test context?
- Care: What does the manufacturer say about dust, cleaning, water, and protector handling?
- Repair: What screen and hinge service is available, at what quoted price, and under what local eligibility terms?
Repair availability and cost depend on the device, country, eligibility, and service terms, so confirm them with the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for the model you are considering.
