Flickr says a vulnerability in a third-party email service provider’s system may have made some member information accessible. Its notice does not confirm that anyone accessed or stole the data. Flickr says passwords and payment card numbers were not affected.

What happened

Flickr says it was alerted on February 5, 2026, to a vulnerability in a system operated by one of its email service providers. The flaw “may have allowed unauthorized access to some Flickr member information.” Flickr says it disabled access to the affected system within hours, removed links to the vulnerable endpoint, notified the provider, requested a full investigation, began reviewing and improving its security, and notified relevant data protection authorities. Flickr’s breach notice does not identify the provider or say how many accounts may have been involved.

What information may have been accessible

Depending on the account, Flickr says the information that may have been accessible included:

  • Name and email address
  • Flickr username and account type
  • IP address and general location
  • Activity on Flickr

Flickr’s notice says passwords and payment card numbers were not affected. That statement addresses those two categories; it does not establish whether any information was actually accessed or misused.

What Flickr users should do

Watch for phishing

Be cautious of unsolicited messages that refer to Flickr, especially those asking you to sign in or disclose information. Flickr says, “We will never ask for your password via email.” To check your account, open Flickr by typing its address or using a trusted bookmark rather than following a link in an unexpected message.

Review your account settings

Sign in to Flickr directly and check your account settings for anything unexpected. This is a general precaution Flickr recommends for members.

Change a password only if you reused it

Flickr does not say every member must reset a password. If your Flickr password is also used on another service, consider changing it on that service; a reused password can put that separate account at risk if it is exposed elsewhere.

Flickr’s password guidance says passwords must be at least 12 characters and unique. Its Help Center instructions explain how to change or reset a password through the official sign-in flow or app. Flickr recommends a password manager as one way to generate and store strong, unique passwords. Do not share your password with anyone, including Flickr Support.

What is not yet established

  • Whether anyone accessed or stole data: The notice describes a possibility, not confirmed access or theft. SecurityWeek likewise reports that the notice does not say data was actually accessed or stolen. SecurityWeek’s coverage also does not identify the provider.
  • Which provider was involved: Flickr’s notice and the reviewed SecurityWeek report do not name it.
  • How many accounts were affected: Flickr gives no count. BetaNews reported on February 7, 2026, that the scale had not been disclosed at that time; it did not provide a number. BetaNews’ report is a dated account of what was known then, not a confirmed total.
  • Whether information was misused: The reviewed sources do not establish misuse.

How to contact Flickr or raise a concern

Flickr’s notice lists help@flickr.com for questions. It says EEA and UK residents may complain to their local data protection authority, and California residents may contact the California Attorney General. The notice also names Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion for identity protection, but does not say a credit freeze is necessary for this incident.
