What happened to Air Canada Flight AC872?
The flight was scheduled to travel from Toronto to Paris. Shortly after takeoff on June 5, 2024, it turned back to Toronto Pearson because of an engine issue. Air Canada identified the issue as a compressor stall. CityNews Toronto reported the airline’s explanation.
The aircraft was a Boeing 777 carrying 389 passengers and 13 crew members, according to contemporaneous reporting. It landed normally, was met by first-responder vehicles as a precaution, and taxied to the gate under its own power. No injuries were reported, and passengers were accommodated on another flight. The Free Press Journal reported the passenger and crew counts and the airline statement.
Did the plane’s engine catch fire?
Air Canada said no: the video showed the engine at the point of compressor stall, when disrupted airflow can cause fuel to ignite farther down the engine. The airline stated, “It is not the engine itself on fire.” That is Air Canada’s explanation of the video, not a cause finding from an independently identified investigation.

Why did the plane return to Toronto?
Air Canada said the aircraft returned because of the compressor stall. Its statement, reproduced in contemporaneous reporting, said the flight returned shortly after departure, landed normally, and was met by first responders as a precaution before taxiing to the gate on its own. The available reporting does not establish a regulator’s or accident investigator’s separate cause determination.
