If make modules_install fails, the exact error line—not the final make: *** summary—determines the fix. This target installs kernel modules; it does not install the bootable kernel image. First identify which install step failed, then check module configuration, permissions, the destination path, and the kernel release before changing or overwriting anything.

What make modules_install does

The kernel build’s modules_install target installs compiled kernel modules. In-tree modules normally go under /lib/modules/$(KERNELRELEASE)/kernel/. External modules use a separate subdirectory; current Kbuild documentation identifies updates/ as the default for those modules. See the Kbuild documentation.

This target is distinct from installing the bootable kernel image. The kernel administration guide’s build workflow is to build with make, install modules when the configuration includes them, and copy the kernel image to the location used by the system’s boot process. Distribution-specific scripts and bootloader steps may also apply. See Compiling the kernel.

Capture the useful error before changing anything

  1. Keep the first substantive error line. The final make: *** line usually reports that a target failed, not why.
  2. Rerun the failing target with verbose output: make V=1 modules_install. If you need staging, include the same INSTALL_MOD_PATH value used in the failed command. V=1 displays the commands being executed, as documented in the kernel administration guide.
  3. Record the environment: note the kernel release, architecture, distribution, configuration used for the build, exact command, install destination, and the full output immediately before the failure.

Do not start by running the whole build as root or by running make clean. Ordinary kernel compilation should not require root; the actual system installation does. Preserving the build output makes it easier to identify the failing command.

Match the message to the failing stage

The output says module support is disabled

If the message explicitly says that the present kernel disabled module support and external modules cannot be built or installed, check the configuration used for this build. The relevant setting is CONFIG_MODULES. The Kbuild documentation describes this explicit diagnostic for external-module operations when module support is disabled. A permissions change will not fix a configuration that disables modules; rebuild with the intended configuration if modules are required.

The install reports “Permission denied” or cannot write under /lib/modules

Check that the install step has the privileges required for the selected destination and that the target filesystem is writable. The kernel guide distinguishes the privileged installation from ordinary compilation: “To do the actual install, you have to be root, but none of the normal build should require that.” Avoid elevating the entire build just to address an install-stage write failure.

If you do not want to write into the host’s live root filesystem, stage the install with INSTALL_MOD_PATH, for example:

make INSTALL_MOD_PATH=/frodo modules_install

That prefixes the installation root, placing in-tree modules below /frodo/lib/modules/$(KERNELRELEASE)/kernel/. Staging is useful for packaging or cross-build workflows. The path behavior is documented in Kbuild documentation.

Modules install to an unexpected path or seem to be missing

The default module directory includes $(KERNELRELEASE), so check the release string the build is using, along with INSTALL_MOD_PATH and any customized install variables. A LOCALVERSION suffix or other release difference can make modules land in a different versioned directory than expected. Confirm the path shown by the verbose command rather than assuming the destination.

The release matches a working kernel

Stop before reinstalling if the target release is already in use: the install can overwrite that release’s existing module tree. Back up the matching directory first, or rebuild with a distinct LOCALVERSION suffix so the new modules use a separate release path. The kernel administration guide warns about replacing an existing matching module tree.

A module file is missing or a copy, script, or tool command fails

Use the verbose output to identify the exact command and file that failed, then inspect the preceding output for the first failure. The target’s role and default paths do not establish why a particular .ko file or script failed. Do not assume a tool such as depmod or a compiler is missing unless the transcript shows that specific failure.

If you meant to install the Linux kernel image

make modules_install installs modules, not the bootable kernel image. Follow the kernel installation instructions for your distribution to copy or install the image and complete any bootloader-specific steps. The kernel administration guide notes that distributions commonly provide an install script; check the procedure for your system rather than treating module installation as the full kernel installation.

What to include when asking for help

If the cause is still unclear, share the complete command and the first failing output line, plus the verbose command output if the failure is reproducible. Include the kernel release, architecture, distribution, build configuration, and intended install destination. Without those details, a configuration problem, write failure, release/path mismatch, missing build output, or distribution-specific image-install issue cannot be distinguished reliably.
