When Windows 11 does not detect a second monitor, first distinguish a Windows detection problem from a video-signal problem. If the monitor is missing from Settings > System > Display, Windows is not detecting it; if it appears there but shows No Signal, check the monitor input and the cable, adapter, dock, or graphics output.
Work through these seven fixes in order, starting with the physical connection and then checking Windows, drivers, and hardware support.
1. Check the monitor, cable, input, and port
Before changing Windows settings, verify the entire connection path:
- Confirm that the second monitor is powered on.
- Press the monitor’s physical Input or Source button and select the port in use, such as HDMI 1, HDMI 2, DisplayPort, or USB-C.
- Unplug and firmly reconnect the cable at both ends.
- Try a different cable of the correct type.
- Try another video output on the computer.
- Connect the monitor directly to the PC, bypassing a dock, hub, dongle, or adapter.
- Connect the monitor to another computer or device.
An incorrect monitor input is a common cause of a blank display, especially when it reports No Signal. If the display works with another computer, the monitor and cable are less likely to be the cause. If it fails everywhere, test a different cable and consider a monitor or power problem. Microsoft recommends checking the cable, trying another output, disconnecting accessories, and testing the display with another system; Dell also lists an incorrect monitor input as a common cause of a blank display.

Check whether the cable is connected to the correct part of a desktop PC. If it has a dedicated graphics card, connect both monitors to the graphics card’s outputs rather than mixing graphics-card and motherboard ports.
See Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting guidance and Dell’s docking station guidance.
2. Select Extend with Windows + P
Windows may be using a projection mode that hides or mirrors the second display. Press Windows logo key + P, then select Extend.
| Mode | What it does |
|---|---|
| PC screen only | Uses only the main computer display. |
| Duplicate | Shows the same image on both displays. |
| Extend | Creates one larger desktop across separate monitors. |
| Second screen only | Uses only the external display. |
Choose Extend to use separate applications and windows on each monitor. This shortcut changes projection mode; it cannot repair a defective cable, unsupported USB-C port, failed dock, or graphics-driver problem. For more, see Microsoft’s guide to using multiple monitors in Windows.

3. Use Windows 11’s Detect button
Open Start > Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Detect. Select Detect if the second monitor is connected but missing from the display diagram.
When Windows recognizes multiple displays, the Rearrange your displays section appears and each monitor receives a number. Select Identify to show each number on its physical screen, then drag the numbered display boxes to match their actual positions.

If Detect says no other display was found, concentrate on the cable, monitor input, adapter, dock, graphics driver, unsupported port, or hardware display limit. The Detect button searches for a display; Windows + P only selects projection mode.
4. Reset the graphics driver
If the second monitor worked previously but stopped after sleep, resume, a display-mode change, or a driver event, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver without restarting Windows.

If nothing changes, continue with a restart and driver troubleshooting.
5. Restart Windows and reset the connection path
Select Start > Power > Restart. A full restart can recover an external-display setup that failed after sleep or a temporary graphics error; waking the computer from sleep is not the same as restarting it.
When a dock or adapter is involved, use this sequence:
- Restart or shut down Windows.
- Power-cycle the monitor and dock according to their manufacturer instructions.
- Reconnect the dock or adapter to the computer.
- Reconnect the monitor.
- Select the monitor’s actual input, such as HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C.
Verify that the dock-to-PC cable is firmly connected and that the laptop port supports the dock’s required video technology. Some docks require current firmware or specific display software. Docks using DisplayLink technology may require software supplied by the dock manufacturer.

6. Update, roll back, or reinstall the display driver
Check Windows and optional driver updates
Open Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install available updates with Download & install. Then open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates and install a relevant display or graphics driver if listed.
Roll back a recently changed driver
If the second monitor stopped working immediately after a graphics-driver update:
- Search for and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver.
The button may be unavailable if Windows has no previous driver package to restore. In that case, reinstall the driver or obtain a compatible package from the computer or graphics-card manufacturer.
Reinstall the display driver
- Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter and select Uninstall device.
- If shown, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Select Uninstall, then restart the PC.
- Open Device Manager again and expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the adapter, select Update driver, then select Search automatically for drivers.
If Device Manager shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the manufacturer-specific graphics driver is not installed or is not being used. Microsoft notes that the proper Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, or computer-manufacturer driver can provide multiple-monitor support, higher resolutions, and improved stability. Device Manager saying that the best driver is installed does not prove it is the newest available; check the PC or graphics-adapter manufacturer for a newer compatible package.

A basic HDMI splitter cannot extend the desktop
A standard HDMI splitter duplicates one video signal; both connected monitors show the same image, not independent displays. To extend the desktop, use separate video outputs from the PC, a compatible docking station, a supported USB display adapter, or a DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport configuration supported by the computer and monitors.
Not every USB-C port supports video
A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee monitor output. The port must support DisplayPort Alternate Mode, Thunderbolt, USB4 display functionality, or another video-capable implementation. A port intended only for data or charging cannot drive a monitor. Check the computer’s manual and the symbols beside the port; on some laptops, only one USB-C or Thunderbolt port supports external video or full dock functionality.
Check dock, adapter, and graphics limits
A laptop, graphics card, dock, or USB-C adapter may support only a specified number of external displays. Maximum resolution, refresh rate, color depth, connection type, and whether the laptop screen remains active can affect that limit.
If one external monitor works but adding a second never does, check the specifications for the computer, graphics adapter, dock, and adapter. DisplayPort daisy-chaining and Multi-Stream Transport work only with compatible hardware and configurations. Microsoft’s external-monitor guidance covers supported display configurations; Dell’s USB-C display guidance also explains why a USB-C connection may provide no video.
What the symptom tells you
| Symptom | Most likely area to check |
|---|---|
| Monitor is absent from Display settings | Cable, port, adapter, dock, driver, or hardware support. |
| Monitor appears in Display settings but says No Signal | Monitor input, cable, adapter, dock, or selected video output. |
| Both monitors show the same image | Projection is set to Duplicate, or a basic splitter is being used. |
| Monitor stopped working after a driver update | Roll back or reinstall the display driver. |
| Monitor works directly but not through a dock | Dock firmware, dock software, dock limits, or an incompatible laptop port. |
| USB-C monitor never receives video | The USB-C port may support data and charging only. |
FAQ
Why does Windows 11 detect my monitor but show No Signal?
Windows has probably detected the display, so check the monitor’s selected input, cable, adapter, dock, and video output first. Select the input that matches the connected port, such as HDMI 1 or DisplayPort, and test the monitor directly on the PC.
Does Windows + P detect a second monitor?
No. Windows + P selects the projection mode. Choose Extend to use separate desktops. To manually search for a missing display, open Start > Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Detect.

Can an HDMI splitter extend Windows 11 to two monitors?
A basic HDMI splitter cannot extend the desktop; it duplicates one video signal. Use separate PC outputs, a compatible dock, a supported USB display adapter, or compatible DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport hardware.
Does every USB-C port support an external monitor?
No. The USB-C port must support DisplayPort Alternate Mode, Thunderbolt, USB4 display output, or another video-capable standard. Some USB-C ports support only data and charging.
What should I do if the second monitor stopped working after a driver update?
Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, open the graphics adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver. If rollback is unavailable, reinstall the driver or install the latest compatible package from the PC or graphics-card manufacturer.
Why does my second monitor work directly but not through my dock?
The dock may need a firmware or DisplayLink software update, the laptop port may not support the dock’s video technology, or the dock may not support the number, resolution, or refresh rate of connected displays.

Start with the monitor’s input and physical cable, then choose Extend, use the Detect button, reset the graphics driver, and restart the complete connection path. If drivers do not help, verify that the USB-C port, dock, adapter, graphics hardware, and connection method support two independent displays. A monitor that appears in Windows but says No Signal needs signal-path troubleshooting rather than repeated Windows detection attempts.
