Neither plan is automatically better when oil prices rise. A fixed-rate plan can make the contract’s specified price components more predictable during its term; a variable plan can expose you to increases but may also pass through decreases. Oil prices alone do not predict your household electricity or gas rate: the effect depends on your local market, supplier purchasing, and the price formula in your contract.
What changes when you choose a fixed or variable plan?
Fixed-rate plans
A fixed-rate contract holds the specified rate or price components steady for a stated term. That can help with budgeting if relevant market costs rise, but it can also mean you miss out on price drops. Check exactly what is fixed: standing charges, taxes, network charges, discounts, and other permitted adjustments may be treated differently. Early cancellation may carry a fee or other conditions.
Variable-rate plans
A variable plan can change under the supplier’s terms, an index, or market conditions. Before signing, establish what the rate tracks, how often it can change, and how much notice the supplier must provide. The formula and customer protections depend on your jurisdiction and contract.
Dynamic plans
Some dynamic electricity offers change prices hourly or every 15 minutes. They may suit customers who can move flexible electricity use to lower-priced periods, but the benefit depends on the tariff formula and your ability to shift consumption. The European Commission recommends checking the index, how often prices can change, and illustrative bills for different consumption patterns in the contract summary (European Commission guidance on energy contracts).

Will your electricity bill go up if oil prices rise?
Not necessarily, and not in a predictable one-for-one relationship. Electricity can come from wind, solar, nuclear, hydropower, gas, or coal, and wholesale prices also respond to supply and demand, interconnection, weather, and suppliers’ purchasing strategies. Gas and coal fuel costs can be volatile, but the available official guidance does not establish a universal oil-price formula for retail electricity or gas rates. What matters is how the local market and your contract’s pricing formula respond.
Suppliers may buy electricity on short-term markets, long-term contracts, or a mix. They may also hedge to reduce exposure to sudden wholesale increases and support more predictable customer rates. This protection has a cost: a fixed offer may be priced above a variable offer available now, because the supplier is forecasting future conditions and pricing the protection into the offer. A fixed tariff is not therefore always cheaper or safer.

Why a fixed rate does not freeze the whole bill
Your bill reflects more than the commodity unit price. In Great Britain, Ofgem’s price-cap explanation identifies wholesale, network, policy, operating, and other cost allowances. In the EU, electricity costs represented nearly 49% of retail electricity bills on average in 2024, according to the European Commission; that is an EU-wide average, not a current local tariff or an estimate for an individual household. Network charges, taxes, and levies also affect what customers pay.
Even if your unit rate is fixed, your total bill can change with how much energy you use and with components the contract does not fix. Compare total estimated cost rather than assuming the word “fixed” means every charge is frozen.

How to compare the offers you can actually get
- Estimate annual cost using your consumption. Compare unit rates, standing charges or fixed fees, network charges, taxes and levies, discounts, and one-off fees. Do not choose on the headline discount alone.
- Identify the price type and formula. Check which components are fixed and whether the alternative is variable, indexed, dynamic, or mixed. Note the index, change frequency, notice period, and where to monitor prices.
- Read the contract conditions. Compare contract length, renewal terms, cancellation rules, early-exit fees, applicable cooling-off rights, and whether any discount is temporary or conditional.
- Match risk to your household. Consider whether predictable costs matter more than the possibility of benefiting from price drops, how much price movement your budget can tolerate, and whether you can shift electricity use to cheaper hours. Dynamic electricity plans are more useful when you have that flexibility and the required tariff and metering arrangements.
- Check local protections and comparison services. Use your regulator’s information and the official comparison tool for your country or region. Rules and available protections are not universal.
The European Commission advises customers to compare total cost against estimated annual consumption and read the contract summary before signing. Its guidance also recommends identifying whether a price is fixed, variable, dynamic, indexed, or mixed (European Commission: Before signing a new energy contract).
Which plan is better for you?
Choose based on the offer’s actual cost and the kind of price risk you can manage—not on oil headlines alone. A fixed plan may fit if predictable contract rates are worth paying for and you accept the term and exit conditions. A variable plan may fit if you can tolerate changes and want the possibility of lower prices passing through. A dynamic plan is a more specialized option for households able to adjust electricity use in response to price changes. Compare the exact offers using your location, energy type, usage, and contract terms; no single option is best for every household.

Check jurisdiction-specific rules before switching
Protections and terminology differ across markets. Ofgem’s price cap applies to domestic standard variable tariffs in Great Britain; it does not cap fixed tariffs, and it limits rates and standing charges rather than the total bill, which still depends on usage (Ofgem: Energy price cap and standing charges explained). The European Commission’s contract guidance concerns EU consumers, while the ACCC’s plan guidance is for Australian electricity consumers (ACCC: Electricity prices and plans). Check the relevant local regulator and the terms of the offer available to you.
