In C, fixed-point arithmetic represents a real value as an integer scaled by a power of two. With F fractional bits, the value is raw / 2^F. For portable code, store that raw integer in a standard integer type, make the scale explicit, and use widened intermediates plus deliberate rounding and overflow handling for multiplication and division.
How fixed-point numbers work
A fixed-point value is an integer paired with an agreed binary-point position. For a signed raw integer r and F fractional bits, its represented value is r / 2^F. For example, with 15 fractional bits, raw value 16,384 represents 0.5.
The integer is not enough to identify the value: the scale matters too. Raw value 16,384 means 0.5 with 15 fractional bits, but 0.25 with 16. Keep formats visible in names, types, or API documentation, and do not combine differently scaled values without converting one of them.
Choosing a Q format
A Q format describes how bits are divided between the integer range and fractional resolution. Q15 and Q31 are common names for formats represented by 16-bit and 32-bit signed values with 15 and 31 fractional bits, respectively; Q7 uses an 8-bit representation with 7 fractional bits. In these fractional-only signed formats, the representable range is approximately -1 to just under 1. A format that allocates more bits to the integer part can represent larger magnitudes, but has fewer fractional bits at the same total width.

Choose a format from the value range and precision your application needs, not from the label alone. CMSIS-DSP documents Q7, Q15, and Q31 types and helpers for constructing raw values, converting, multiplying, accumulating, and saturating: CMSIS-DSP fixed-point datatypes.
- Range: determine the maximum positive and negative magnitude, including intermediate results.
- Resolution: each increment in the raw integer changes the represented value by
1 / 2^F. - Signedness: use a signed representation if negative values are part of the domain; choose unsigned only when the domain is nonnegative and its range is useful.
- Intermediate width: ensure arithmetic can hold the unscaled intermediate result, not just the final fixed-point value.
Adding and subtracting
Addition and subtraction are straightforward when both operands use the same scale: add or subtract their raw integers, then interpret the result with the unchanged fractional-bit count. If the operands use different Q formats, convert them to a common scale first, checking that the conversion will not overflow or discard precision that matters.

Multiplying without losing the scale
Multiplying raw integers produces a value with twice as many fractional bits. If both inputs have F fractional bits, their raw product represents the real product scaled by 2^(2F). To return to the original format, use a sufficiently wide intermediate, apply the chosen rounding rule, then shift right by F bits.
// Conceptual Q15 multiplication: wider must hold the full raw product.
wide_t product = (wide_t)a * b;
wide_t rounded = apply_q15_rounding(product);
wide_t scaled = rounded >> 15;
// Check or saturate scaled before converting it to the destination type.
This is an outline, not a complete portable implementation: the available wide type, negative right-shift behavior, and safe saturation bounds depend on the C implementation and target. In particular, do not assume that a signed shift or a narrowing conversion supplies the rounding or overflow policy you want. Arm describes implementing fixed-point arithmetic with standard integer operations and shifts, changing Q form as needed before or after operations to preserve the desired result: Arm Programming in C.

Dividing while preserving the format
To divide two values in the same format and keep the quotient in that format, scale the numerator before integer division. With F fractional bits, the basic relationship is quotient_raw = (numerator_raw * 2^F) / denominator_raw. The numerator intermediate must be wide enough for the left shift or multiplication; check for a zero denominator and for any range overflow before performing the operation.
Integer division truncates according to C’s integer-division rules, so the result may differ from a rounded quotient. If the application needs rounding, define it explicitly, including the desired behavior for negative operands. A checked division helper should report a zero divisor and an unrepresentable result rather than silently producing a misleading fixed-point value.

Overflow, rounding, and saturation
Signed integer overflow in C is undefined behavior; portable code must not rely on signed wraparound. Unsigned arithmetic wraps modulo the type’s range, but that behavior can still be incorrect for signal processing, controls, or other numeric work. The GNU C Reference Manual and GNU C Language Manual describe C integer behavior.
Decide how each operation handles values outside the destination range. Common choices are to detect and report overflow, prove by preconditions that it cannot occur, or saturate to the nearest representable limit. Saturation is often useful in signal-processing paths, but it is not automatic merely because a value uses a Q format. CMSIS-DSP provides saturating conversions and documents limits on the bit widths supported by its saturation helpers; check those limits for the particular helper you use in its fixed-point datatype documentation.

Rounding deserves an explicit policy too. A right shift after multiplication or integer division can discard fractional bits. Choose whether to truncate, round to nearest, or use another defined rule, and specify how ties and negative values behave. Do not assume an implementation’s signed right shift gives portable rounding behavior.

| Approach | Portability | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Standard integer representation | Uses ordinary C integer types and operations supported across compilers. | You define the Q scale, intermediate width, overflow handling, and rounding policy explicitly. |
| GCC fixed-point extension | Compiler-specific; do not assume another compiler supports the same types or behavior. | GCC documents fixed-point arithmetic, shifts, comparisons, and conversions, but says overflow- and rounding-control pragmas are not implemented. |
| Library Q types, such as CMSIS-DSP | Depends on the library and target toolchain. | Provides documented Q-format types and helpers; verify supported formats, helper limits, and target performance. |
GCC’s documentation says its fixed-point support is based on the N1169 draft of ISO/IEC DTR 18037 and notes that support may evolve as the draft technical report changes. Its Fixed-Point documentation also states: “Pragmas to control overflow and rounding behaviors are not implemented.” For code that must build consistently across compilers, a documented integer representation or a library with explicit Q types is usually easier to audit.
WG14’s N1275 proposal describes fixed-point result types with saturation and interfaces for mixed integer/fixed-point operations. It is standards history and design context, not evidence that a particular C compiler implements those proposals; confirm the actual compiler’s support before depending on it.
Quick Recap
A practical implementation checklist
- Define the format: select a raw integer type and a fractional-bit count, and document the representable range.
- Name the scale: use names or types that distinguish, for example, Q15 values from Q31 values.
- Provide conversion helpers: make construction from and conversion to other representations explicit, with checks where narrowing can lose range.
- Widen before multiplying: cast an operand before multiplication so the operation itself is evaluated in a type wide enough for the full product.
- Specify rounding: document how multiplication, division, and scale changes handle discarded fractional bits, including negative values.
- Handle overflow deliberately: check bounds, establish safe input preconditions, or clamp before narrowing to the destination type.
- Guard division: reject a zero denominator and verify that scaling the numerator cannot overflow the intermediate.
- Test on the target: confirm compiler and library support, generated performance, and edge-case behavior on the MCU or DSP where the code will run.
