Neither a fixed nor a variable tariff automatically wins when oil prices rise. For household mains gas and electricity in Great Britain—England, Scotland and Wales—a fixed tariff locks in its agreed unit rates and standing charges for a set term. A standard variable tariff can change, but covered households have Ofgem’s price cap on those rates. The better choice depends on the actual offer, your usage and whether you value certainty over the chance of benefiting if variable rates fall.
Do rising oil prices mean your energy bill will rise?
Not directly or by a predictable amount. The sources available do not establish a formula linking a particular oil-price move to a later household gas or electricity tariff. Global energy markets can affect wholesale energy costs, but oil is not a household-tariff calculator.
Wholesale gas can matter to both fuels: Ofgem attributed the October 2026 price-cap rise to higher wholesale gas prices amid conflict in the Middle East. Gas-fired generation can also set wholesale electricity prices under marginal-cost pricing, as explained by the House of Commons Library. These are indirect, market-dependent connections, not evidence that household tariffs track oil prices proportionally.
What fixed and variable tariffs protect you from
Fixed tariffs provide rate certainty
A fixed tariff keeps its contracted unit rates and standing charges unchanged during the agreed term, subject to the contract’s terms. That can protect you from increases in those rates while the deal is in force. It does not guarantee a lower bill: if variable rates fall, the fixed deal may cost more, and an exit fee may make leaving early expensive.

Variable tariffs can change, but the cap has limits
Most households on a supplier’s standard variable or default tariff in Great Britain are covered by Ofgem’s price cap. It limits unit rates and standing charges, and Ofgem reviews it quarterly. It does not cap total household spending: the amount of energy you use still affects your bill. The cap also does not mean every supplier’s tariff or every household’s costs are identical. See Ofgem’s explanation of the cap and standing charges.
What the current GB price cap tells you
For 1 October to 31 December 2026, Ofgem says the cap increased by 4% for a typical dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit. Its illustrative average Direct Debit rates for that period are:

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
| Fuel and charge | Illustrative average rate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity unit rate | 26.32p/kWh | No electricity VAT in the stated period |
| Gas unit rate | 7.97p/kWh | Includes 5% VAT |
| Electricity standing charge | 54.83p/day | Average for the stated payment method and period |
| Gas standing charge | 29.68p/day | Average for the stated payment method and period |
These are dated illustrative averages, not a quote or forecast for your home. Rates vary by region, meter and payment method; the typical annual figure is not a personal bill limit. Ofgem notes that comparisons with the prior period need care because electricity VAT was removed for the specified period while gas remains subject to 5% VAT. Check the figures and caveats in Ofgem’s current unit-rate and standing-charge table.
How to compare a fixed offer with your current tariff
- Gather your usage and current rates. Find your recent gas and electricity consumption and the unit rates and daily standing charges on your bill or supplier account. Use your own regional rates and meter details, rather than relying on a typical annual bill.
- Calculate each tariff’s annualized cost. For each fuel, multiply expected annual use by the offer’s unit rate, then add 365 times its daily standing charge. Add the fuels together if comparing a dual-fuel deal. This estimates charges at that usage; it is not a guarantee of future bills.
- Check what changes the comparison. Confirm the contract length, exit fees, payment method, meter type, region and any time-of-use rates that apply to your household.
- Decide how you value certainty. Compare the fixed rates with your current variable rates and the applicable regional cap rates. Ask whether the certainty of the fixed price is worth the possibility that the variable tariff could later fall.
The House of Commons Library’s guide to energy bills likewise describes the trade-off: a fixed deal may save money against a variable tariff, or leave you paying more if variable rates fall.

When a fixed tariff may suit you—and when it may not
- A fix may suit you if its rates and standing charges compare well with your current tariff, you expect to stay for the contract term, and predictable rates matter more to you than the chance of a later variable-rate fall.
- A variable tariff may suit you if you prefer not to commit to a term or want the possibility of benefiting if rates decrease. Remember that covered variable rates can also change when the cap is reviewed.
- Either option needs closer checking if your usage is unusually high or low, you use a time-of-use tariff, or an exit fee or payment condition could change the effective cost.
If you use heating oil instead of mains gas
Heating oil is a separate case: Ofgem says it is outside the GB price cap. Its price can move quickly and may vary with fuel markets, location, season and delivery timing. The mains-gas tariff comparison above does not establish how a heating-oil purchase will change. See Ofgem’s guidance for consumers not protected by the price cap.

This guidance concerns household mains gas and electricity in Great Britain. Do not assume the same cap rules apply in Northern Ireland, to business supply, heat networks, LPG or heating oil; the sources cited here do not establish those rules.
