If your YouTube Live stream buffers while FFmpeg reads a video from a network drive, first find which part of the pipeline is falling behind: the file-share read, FFmpeg processing, or your internet upload. Stream the same file from a local copy with the same FFmpeg command and output settings, then compare FFmpeg’s logs with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. A viewer-side buffering symptom alone does not identify the cause.
Identify where the stream is falling behind
A live stream has three relevant stages: FFmpeg must read the source, process or pass through its audio and video, and send the resulting stream to YouTube. Trouble at any stage can show up as stuttering or buffering for viewers. Use evidence from each stage rather than changing FFmpeg options at random.
- Input: Can FFmpeg read the network-share file consistently?
- Processing: Does FFmpeg keep up with real time, especially if it is transcoding or applying filters?
- Output: Can your outbound connection sustain the configured stream bitrate, and does YouTube report stable ingestion?
FFmpeg supports files and network streams as inputs, but that does not establish that a particular network share or path is performing adequately. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
Run a controlled network-drive versus local-copy test
- Record the current setup. Note your operating system, FFmpeg version, storage protocol or share type (for example, SMB or NFS if known), full command with the stream key removed, and relevant log lines. Record whether the command transcodes or stream-copies.
- Make a local copy of the exact same media file. An external SSD can be a convenient place for this comparison, but the test is about isolating the input path, not proving that a particular drive is needed.
- Repeat the stream using the local copy. Keep the FFmpeg command, output settings, and other conditions the same; change only the input path.
- Compare what happens. Watch FFmpeg’s output, including its
speed=statistic and errors, and check the stream’s health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room. If you record a local archive, confirm that it continues growing and inspect the recording if the symptom recurs.
If the local-copy run resolves the symptom, the input path is implicated, but that result alone does not prove whether the share, network path, or read consistency is responsible. If both runs behave alike, the test has not isolated the network drive as the cause.

Interpret the results before changing settings
| What you observe | What it suggests | What to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| The network-share run stutters, but the local-copy run does not, with otherwise identical settings. | The input path is a reasonable focus for further diagnosis; the comparison does not identify a specific fault. | Investigate the share, its network path, and read consistency. Gather the share type and relevant logs before considering protocol-specific tuning. |
FFmpeg reports speed= below real time, or logs show processing errors. |
FFmpeg may not be processing the media quickly enough. | Check system load, filters, and encoder settings, especially when transcoding. Confirm whether stream-copying or re-encoding is in use. |
| FFmpeg keeps up, but YouTube reports unstable ingestion or stream-health messages. | The outbound path or YouTube ingestion deserves attention; this observation alone does not establish which one is at fault. | Measure outbound upload capacity and reliability against the configured bitrate, and review YouTube’s current streaming tips. |
| The local archive itself has audio or video defects. | The defect is present in the captured output, rather than being only a viewer playback report. | Use the archive and FFmpeg logs to narrow down whether the issue appears during reading, processing, or output. |
Check FFmpeg pacing and buffering options carefully
FFmpeg’s -re and its -readrate option pace input. The FFmpeg command-line documentation describes this use for simulating real-time capture when reading files; it is not a remedy for a slow network share. Do not apply it indiscriminately, particularly to actual live or capture inputs. Review the FFmpeg option documentation and the manual matching your installed build.
Nor is a larger input buffer or an arbitrary queue setting established as a fix for file-share read stalls. In FFmpeg’s options, rtbufsize concerns memory used to buffer real-time frames, while nobuffer reduces buffering latency during initial input analysis. These options have specific contexts; they do not add capacity to an underperforming share or uplink. See the FFmpeg all-options documentation.

Do not prescribe or guess a universal -thread_queue_size, -rtbufsize, -re, or cache value without evidence that the relevant option addresses the observed bottleneck. FFmpeg documentation changes with releases, so capture ffmpeg -version and check the local manual for your installed version.
Verify YouTube encoder settings and upload headroom
Once the input and processing checks are done, compare your output settings with YouTube’s current encoder settings. YouTube’s guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; the page includes H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 guidance, so do not treat one bitrate as universal.

For H.264, YouTube’s current table recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 8 Mbps for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of stability. Consult the linked table for the exact combination you stream.
YouTube says the outbound connection must be sufficient for the stream bitrate and recommends 20% headroom for the total bitrate. Test upload capacity—not download speed—and account for other traffic sharing the connection. A connection that is adequate on average can still be disrupted, and YouTube notes disruptions can break a stream. See its streaming tips.

Common causes and practical fixes
The share read is inconsistent
If only the network-share run fails, investigate the share and network path using the controlled comparison and logs. Keep the local copy as a diagnostic reference; moving a file locally can help isolate input behavior, but it cannot fix upload congestion or encode overload. The evidence here does not establish a universal SMB or NFS tuning value.
Encoding or filters cannot keep up
If FFmpeg’s reported speed falls below real time, inspect processing load and the filters and encoder settings in use. Confirm whether the command is re-encoding or stream-copying, then adjust only the processing settings implicated by that evidence. Reducing resolution or bitrate may create more network margin, but it also trades away output quality and does not repair a slow file read.

The uplink is short on capacity or reliability
Measure upload capacity with the stream’s configured bitrate in mind, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Consider competing traffic on the same connection and review YouTube’s health messages. If you reduce bitrate, verify that the new value matches YouTube’s recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate.
The proposed fix is just a bigger buffer or queue
Do not increase a buffer or queue simply because the viewer sees buffering. First establish that the relevant FFmpeg input or processing stage is the one falling behind. Buffering options have context-specific effects and are not a substitute for adequate storage reads, processing throughput, or upload capacity.
What to include when asking for help
- FFmpeg version from
ffmpeg -versionand operating system. - Share or network filesystem type, if known.
- The command with the stream key and other credentials redacted.
- Relevant FFmpeg log lines, including speed and errors.
- Whether the command transcodes, applies filters, or stream-copies.
- Whether an identical local-copy run changes the symptom.
- YouTube Live Control Room health messages and upload measurements.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running 24/7 rather than diagnose an FFmpeg setup, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud service loops uploaded videos, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. YouTube only is supported; StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and does not stream from a camera.
- Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its pricing page for details. Start your free StreamNeo day.
