If kubectl exec returns unable to upgrade connection: container not found ("simpleapp") in LFD259 Step 6, first check whether the pod’s container actually started. In the matching SimpleApp lab report, the pods were in ImagePullBackOff because Kubernetes could not pull 10.97.40.62:5000/simpleapp:latest. Retrying exec will not help until the image-pull problem is resolved.

What the error means in this SimpleApp report

The command names pod try1-5db9bc6f85-whxbf and asks Kubernetes to run a command in the simpleapp container:

kubectl exec -c simpleapp -it try1-5db9bc6f85-whxbf -- /bin/bash -c'echo $ilike'

In the matching LFD259 lab discussion, all six try1 pods showed ImagePullBackOff. Pod events reported repeated failures to pull 10.97.40.62:5000/simpleapp:latest, followed by ErrImagePull and ImagePullBackOff. That points to the pod not having a running container to attach to—not necessarily a typo in -c simpleapp. Linux Foundation Forums discussion (April 2023)

Check the pod status and events first

Inspect the exact pod named in the error. The status and recent events will show whether the container started and, if not, why Kubernetes could not start it.

  1. Check the pod’s current state: kubectl get pod try1-5db9bc6f85-whxbf

  2. Inspect its detailed status and recent events: kubectl describe pod try1-5db9bc6f85-whxbf

  3. Look for container states such as Waiting, ImagePullBackOff, or CrashLoopBackOff, and read the event messages near the bottom of the output.

If the output shows an image-pull failure, follow the image and registry checks below. If it shows that the container started and then crashed, inspect its logs and events instead; the same error text can occur in other situations. Stack Overflow discussion (2020)

If events show ImagePullBackOff, check the image and registry

For the reported SimpleApp case, the failed image reference was 10.97.40.62:5000/simpleapp:latest. Confirm that this exact repository path and tag are available in the configured private registry, then check that the registry is reachable and accessible from the relevant nodes. The forum reply also recommends checking that the container runtime and private repository are operating on both nodes and that repository access is configured on both. Linux Foundation Forums discussion (April 2023)

  • Image and tag: Verify that simpleapp:latest exists at the registry address specified by the pod.

  • Registry reachability and access: Confirm the nodes can contact the private repository and are configured to access it.

Use the pod’s event messages to narrow down which check is failing. Do not treat repeated kubectl exec attempts as a remedy for an image that Kubernetes cannot pull.

If the pod is failing for another reason

The message is not proof of one universal cause. Another Kubernetes discussion describes a crashing or not-yet-started container and points to pod details and logs; a separate GitLab Runner report discusses image architecture and image entrypoint or command issues in that environment. Those cases do not establish the cause in this SimpleApp lab, but they show why you should diagnose from the affected pod rather than infer a fix from the error string alone. Kubernetes discussion (2020); GitLab Runner discussion (2024)

Retry exec after the container starts

Once the pod reports that its container has started and is available, retry the command using the intended pod and container names. If the pod still is not ready or its status changes to another failure, return to its events and logs rather than repeatedly rerunning exec.
