Error 126 means Windows could not find a module needed to start Remote Desktop Services (TermService). A likely place to investigate is the service’s ServiceDll registry value and the file it points to, termsrv.dll. These checks can help identify a wrong DLL path or a missing or damaged file, but the error does not have one established cause on every Windows PC.
What Error 126 means
When Windows cannot start Remote Desktop Services, it may report: “Error 126: The specified module could not be found.” The service is identified as TermService in the troubleshooting sources. The message indicates that a required module could not be found; it does not, by itself, tell you whether the service points to the wrong file or the expected file is missing or damaged.
Reports on Microsoft Q&A concern Windows 10 and Windows 11, but they do not establish a single cause or a build-by-build fix. The steps below are diagnostic checks, not a guaranteed repair.
Check the TermService DLL path
Make registry changes only if you are comfortable with advanced Windows troubleshooting. An incorrect edit can affect the service. Before changing anything, record the current value so you can restore it if needed.

Open Registry Editor and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesTermServiceParameters. -
Find the

Compare the value’s type and path with those expected settings. If it points to a different module, that may explain the error; do not assume that changing it will fix every system.
A third-party modification such as RDP Wrapper is one possible reason the value might point elsewhere. If you recognize such software on the PC, take that history into account before changing the setting. Avoid importing registry files from unknown sources: a file suggested in a community reply for a particular Windows version is not a universal fix.

Check whether termsrv.dll exists and is intact
In File Explorer, check whether %SystemRoot%System32termsrv.dll exists. If the path is correct but the file is missing or damaged, Windows’ System File Checker can check and attempt to repair that file.

Open Command Prompt as an administrator.

Run

Read the result and follow any repair or restart instructions Windows provides. If Windows is installed on a different drive or path, do not use the example path unchanged; substitute the actual location of the Windows folder.
If SFC cannot repair the file, the same article describes DISM as a possible next step. Use current guidance appropriate to your Windows version before attempting further repair. Do not download termsrv.dll from a third-party DLL site or copy one from another PC as a routine fix; the available sources do not establish that those approaches are safe or suitable for all builds.

If the checks do not resolve the error

Note the exact error text and your Windows version before continuing; community reports cover Windows 10 and 11 but do not provide a universal, version-independent repair.

Review any prior software or service modifications that may have changed the
ServiceDllpath, particularly if RDP Wrapper was installed. -
Do not treat Microsoft Q&A replies as a Microsoft guarantee. They are community guidance, and a registry file or change mentioned in one answer may apply only to a specific configuration.

If Windows repair tools cannot restore the file or the service still fails, consult current Microsoft support guidance for the installed Windows version before attempting a more disruptive repair.
