Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart by checking whether OBS is reporting network drops, rendering lag, or encoder overload: each points to a different problem. If the network dropped-frames counter rises, lower the bitrate as a controlled test, check YouTube Live Control Room for ingest errors, then compare the route to YouTube with another ingest endpoint or service. The counter alone does not prove that OVHcloud, YouTube, or OBS is at fault.
Identify which kind of frames OBS is dropping
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that its connection to the remote stream server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Here, the remote endpoint is YouTube’s ingest server, not an OBS-operated server. OBS published that definition in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide on September 30, 2024. It is a diagnostic clue, not proof of which part of the route is responsible.
Before changing settings, check OBS’s dropped-frames percentage alongside its rendering-lag and encoding-lag indicators, then save the log from the affected session. Network drops point toward bitrate or connectivity; rendering lag or encoder overload points toward the machine’s capacity to render or encode. OBS’s encoding-performance guidance associates those latter symptoms with GPU or system bottlenecks and recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate when the indicators show capacity limits.
Record a useful baseline
For a representative stream, note the time, VPS region and plan, OBS output bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, selected YouTube ingest endpoint and protocol, and whether the symptoms are continuous or intermittent. Keep the OBS log. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether a test actually helped.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Test whether the configured bitrate is too high
Lower the video bitrate and compare the OBS dropped-frames percentage during a similar stream. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate selection. Treat that as a heuristic, not a guarantee: what matters is stable throughput from this VPS to the actual YouTube ingest endpoint, and a generic speed test may take a different route or run at a different time.
If drops improve materially at a lower bitrate, the previous setting was too close to—or above—the capacity this path could sustain reliably during the test. That result does not by itself locate the limitation: it may be on the VPS, the route, or elsewhere between the VPS and YouTube.
Match YouTube’s ingest settings to your stream
Use the encoder requirements for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Test before the live event with representative movement and audio, and monitor stream health.

H.264 recommended bitrate examples
The figures below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest rates on its encoder settings page, as crawled in 2026. They are not measurements of your OVHcloud-to-YouTube throughput and do not guarantee that a particular VPS route can sustain them. YouTube lists different ranges for H.265 and AV1.
| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
Choose the row for your actual output rather than treating one number as a universal YouTube bitrate. If YouTube’s recommended rate is above what the route sustains reliably, use a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate that the connection can support.
Read YouTube’s stream-health errors
Check the YouTube Live Control Room’s Health Indicator and its timestamped messages. YouTube can report problems with bitrate, format, audio or video settings, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe frequency. Correct a specific ingest-setting error before blaming the network. If there is no matching ingest error while OBS’s network dropped-frames counter rises, continue with capacity and route tests.

Compare ingest endpoints and network paths
OBS recommends testing a different server and, where appropriate, a different streaming service. Keep other settings as constant as possible. If the result changes, that is evidence that the destination or path may matter; it does not establish that YouTube or OVHcloud caused the problem.
OVHcloud documents several tools that can add context to a route investigation:
- Looking Glass: inspect routes and routing tables from a data center.
- Proof: run network speed tests.
- Smokeping: observe ICMP reachability, latency, and path changes.
- Weathermap: view backbone link load.
Compare observations by time and region with the stream symptoms. A generic speed test or ICMP result does not establish that the specific YouTube ingest flow is healthy; do not call a route faulty based on one test.

Check the OVHcloud plan and where OBS runs
OVHcloud’s VPS page lists public bandwidth by offer and says traffic is unlimited. Those are offer- and market-specific details, so check the exact plan and region. Unlimited traffic is not unlimited instantaneous bandwidth, and a plan’s nominal public bandwidth does not guarantee stable throughput to one YouTube ingest endpoint. If the evidence points to the VPS configuration, inspect its local firewall and network settings rather than assuming they are the cause.
Make sure you are testing the route used by the encoder. If OBS runs on the VPS, its outbound stream uses that VPS’s network path. If OBS runs on a local computer and only media or control components are on the VPS, diagnose the local computer’s actual outbound route instead; home Wi-Fi or router checks are relevant only when that equipment carries the stream.

Dynamic bitrate can reduce quality when the connection cannot keep up, but OBS describes it as a workaround rather than a fix for the underlying connection problem. Record whether it changes the symptoms, and continue investigating the route or capacity rather than treating the workaround as a diagnosis.
Check local-edge causes only when they are on the stream path
OBS lists VPNs, security software, network-prioritization utilities, outdated network drivers, Wi-Fi, and modem, router, cable, or other network hardware among possible causes. Check them if they are actually between the encoder and the internet. If OBS runs on the VPS, a home router or Wi-Fi link is not the VPS’s outbound path.
Escalate with evidence, not a single test
If drops persist after a bitrate reduction and endpoint or service comparison, send OVHcloud support the affected timestamps, VPS region and plan, destination, OBS log, and repeated route, latency, and throughput observations. If the encoder’s local ISP or last-mile connection is implicated, OBS recommends contacting that ISP after checking relevant software and hardware. A single traceroute or speed test is not enough to establish a route fault.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded, prerecorded videos live on YouTube rather than to stream a camera or a live OBS scene, StreamNeo is another option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its cloud service keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
