Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf your Android phone charges but does not appear in File Explorer, unlock it and select File transfer in its USB notification. Then test a known data-capable cable and another USB port before troubleshooting Windows drivers. If Windows detects the phone but reports a driver problem, use Device Manager and get any manual driver from the device maker’s official support site.
Work through these checks in order. USB menus and troubleshooting options can vary by phone, Android version, Windows build, and device, so treat the steps as diagnostics rather than guaranteed fixes.
1. Unlock the phone and select File Transfer
Connect the Android phone, unlock it, and open its USB notification. Under a setting such as Use USB for, select File transfer. Wording varies by device. If the phone asks for permission to access its data, approve the prompt.
Google Android Help notes: “Not all USB cables can transfer files.” A phone may charge while its USB mode is set to charging or while the cable does not carry data.

2. Test the cable, phone, and computer ports
- Try a cable known to support data transfer and compatible with both the phone and computer.
- Connect the phone directly to another USB port on the computer, bypassing hubs or docks.
- If possible, connect the phone and cable to another computer. Also try another device in the original computer’s USB port to help isolate the problem.
- Check the phone’s USB port for visible damage or debris; do not force anything into it.
If the phone works on another computer, investigate the original PC’s port or Windows installation. If it fails on multiple computers, the cable, phone port, or phone may be the cause.
3. Check Device Manager
Device Manager can help determine whether Windows detects the phone and reports a device or driver problem.
- Select Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
- Connect and unlock the phone.
- Look for the phone or portable device entry, including entries with a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant entry and select Properties to review its device status, if available.
The entry’s name and category can vary. Use the device status and warning icon to decide whether driver troubleshooting is appropriate; do not assume every connection failure is caused by a missing MTP driver.

4. Update or reinstall the device driver
Microsoft’s general Windows driver guidance supports updating a device driver, uninstalling the device and restarting so Windows can attempt to reinstall it, or rolling back a driver if the issue began after a recent update. The exact options may not appear for every phone.
- In Device Manager, right-click the detected phone or affected device.
- Select Update driver and follow the available prompts.
- If the problem began after a driver update and the option is available, open Properties > Driver and select Roll Back Driver.
- To reinstall the device, select Uninstall device, then restart Windows and reconnect the phone.
For manual driver installation, use the phone or computer manufacturer’s official support site and select a package for your Windows version and system architecture. Microsoft Support advises: “Avoid downloading drivers from any websites other than the manufacturer’s official site.” Avoid generic third-party driver download sites and paid driver-updater utilities.
5. Consider whether a recent driver update caused the problem
Microsoft documented a historical MTP/WPD driver failure affecting some MTP-dependent USB phones and media devices on Windows 10 version 1607. The 2017 incident involved a specific driver released through Windows Update; Microsoft said it removed the driver and issued an update. This is evidence that a driver update can cause an MTP problem, not proof that the same issue explains current failures. If your problem began after a recent driver change, consider the rollback option in Device Manager.

6. Use a wireless transfer alternative
If wired transfer remains unavailable, a supported wireless option may meet your immediate need. Windows 11 offers a File Explorer phone feature for supported Android devices. Microsoft’s documented setup uses Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices > Manage Devices, followed by enabling Show mobile device in File Explorer. The feature requires pairing and has Android and Link to Windows requirements; check Microsoft’s current compatibility details before relying on it.
Google also offers Quick Share for Windows. Its official requirements include a compatible Windows PC, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Google says compatible PCs use 64-bit Windows 10 or later, while ARM-based devices require Windows 11 or later. Samsung PC users are directed to the Samsung Quick Share app in Microsoft Store. Check Google’s current requirements for your device.
7. Note Windows 10 support status
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Under Microsoft’s standard support statement, Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. This does not diagnose an MTP connection problem, but it is relevant when deciding whether to continue using Windows 10.

FAQ
Why does my Android phone charge but not transfer files?
The phone may be set to charging, or the cable may charge without supporting data transfer. Unlock the phone, select File transfer, and try a known data-capable cable.
Do I need to download a separate MTP driver?
Start with Windows Device Manager. If you need a manual driver, use the phone or computer manufacturer’s official support site and confirm that the package matches your Windows version and system architecture.
What should I do if MTP stopped working after a driver update?
In Device Manager, open the affected device’s Properties > Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver if the option is available. Microsoft has documented a historical Windows 10 version 1607 MTP/WPD driver incident, but it does not explain every present-day problem.

The Bottom Line
Start by unlocking the Android phone and selecting File transfer, then test a data-capable cable and another USB port. Use Device Manager if Windows detects the phone but reports a device or driver problem, and obtain manual drivers only from the manufacturer’s official site. If wired transfer still fails, check whether a supported wireless option is available.
