First determine which connection failed: FFmpeg reading the tour source, FFmpeg publishing to YouTube, or the FFmpeg process itself. Those are different failures. FFmpeg documents reconnect controls for HTTP inputs, but those options are not a universal fix for a dropped RTMP or RTMPS publishing connection. Without your FFmpeg version, redacted command, complete error and failure direction, there is no reliable single command to prescribe.
Capture the failure before changing settings
Keep the evidence from the same failed run. Redact credentials before sharing anything: a YouTube stream key is secret.
- The complete FFmpeg command, with the stream key and other credentials replaced by placeholders.
- The output of
ffmpeg -version, including build configuration. - The full log excerpt from shortly before the failure through the disconnect or process exit.
- The source type and protocol, such as an HTTP URL, a local file or a capture device.
- Whether reading the input stopped first, YouTube ingest stopped first, or the process exited; note whether FFmpeg remained running.
- Any Live Control Room stream-health message and whether the stream recovered without intervention.
These details distinguish an HTTP input timeout or EOF from an RTMP/RTMPS publishing problem, a failed source, or a stopped process. A message containing the word “reconnect” alone does not identify which leg needs fixing.
Identify which part of the stream failed
| Failure | What it means | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Input read failure | FFmpeg cannot keep reading its source. If the source is HTTP, FFmpeg’s HTTP-specific reconnect options may be relevant. | Source availability, protocol, the input-side log messages, and whether the source ended or disconnected. |
| YouTube publish failure | FFmpeg has trouble sending its output to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. HTTP input reconnect options do not establish recovery for this output connection. | Ingest URL and key, RTMP versus RTMPS configuration, network reachability, TLS errors, and whether FFmpeg stays alive. |
| Process or source failure | FFmpeg may have exited, a capture source may have failed, or a finite file may have ended. These are not necessarily network-reconnect problems. | Exit status, process state, source state and the complete log around the failure. |
If the failed leg is an HTTP input
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation describes reconnect options for HTTP. Use them only when the input in question is HTTP and the observed failure matches the option’s behavior; they are not generic flags for every protocol.

reconnectretries after a disconnect that occurs before the input reaches EOF.reconnect_at_eoftreats EOF as an error and attempts reconnection. This can suit a source expected to continue, but it does not make an ended recording live again: if the source is finished or unavailable, retries cannot supply new content.reconnect_streamedapplies to streamed or non-seekable inputs.- HTTP options also include controls for retrying certain HTTP or network errors and limiting retry count, delay, or total delay. Consult the documentation for the installed FFmpeg version and the relevant option’s exact semantics.
Place input options before the corresponding -i so they are scoped to that input. If the property-tour source is a local file, capture device, or another protocol, HTTP reconnect options are not the remedy for its failure.
If the failed leg is publishing to YouTube
FFmpeg describes RTMP as a streaming protocol over TCP/IP and documents it separately from HTTP. The HTTP reconnect options above do not constitute a general RTMP/RTMPS output-reconnect switch. Do not add them to an output command and assume they will restore a disconnected YouTube publish connection.

Check the output-side error and whether FFmpeg remains alive. A connection timeout, TLS/SSL failure, invalid ingest address, rejected stream key, exhausted input, and exited process call for different investigations. The available documentation does not establish one automatic RTMP recovery flag that is right for every FFmpeg version, build and output path. Verify any version-specific setting against the documentation for your actual build before relying on it.
Verify YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key
- Open the current stream’s settings in YouTube Live Control Room and copy the stream URL and key provided for that stream. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains that the encoder uses these details to send its feed.
- Confirm the URL matches the intended ingest protocol. If you intend to publish over RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL supplied by YouTube rather than assuming an RTMP address is encrypted. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance covers encryption and troubleshooting.
- For an SSL error, verify the scheme and server against the provided RTMPS address. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance discusses port 443 where it is needed; use the port appropriate to the URL rather than changing it blindly.
- Check that your installed FFmpeg build supports the protocol used by the output. The FFmpeg version and build configuration help establish what is available.
- Keep the key out of public commands, screenshots and logs. Redact it before asking for help or saving an example.
Check upload capacity and YouTube stream health
A connection can be correctly configured and still fail if the available upload capacity is unstable or insufficient. YouTube’s streaming tips advise leaving 20% upload headroom beyond the stream bitrate. For a primary and backup encoder, YouTube says to account for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate, plus 20%. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees against disruption.

- Compare the actual available outbound capacity during the tour with the configured stream bitrate, rather than relying on a plan’s advertised maximum.
- Review Live Control Room’s stream-health messages at the time of the failure.
- Check whether other uploads or network activity coincide with the problem.
- For a backup encoder, include both encoders’ bitrates in the capacity calculation before adding the recommended headroom.
YouTube warns: “Have a reliable network: A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” A brief network interruption can therefore affect the live broadcast even when FFmpeg continues running.
Validate encoding settings separately from reconnect behavior
Encoding settings help YouTube ingest and process a compatible stream, but they do not repair a lost network connection. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, lists H.264 among its supported video codecs, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.

Use the settings appropriate to the desired resolution and bitrate, then test with representative property-tour movement and audio. If the tour changes from static rooms to a fast camera pan, test that motion too; a successful static-image test alone may not expose a bandwidth or encoding problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan process recovery and test before the tour
Continuous operation needs a recovery plan for both a dropped publishing connection and an FFmpeg process that exits. First establish which failure occurs; then decide how the process will be monitored and restored. The evidence available here does not support prescribing a particular supervisor, restart command or RTMP reconnect setting for an unspecified build. Test the chosen approach before a real tour, monitor the stream while it is live, and deliberately test failover. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring in its streaming tips.

YouTube says it automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours. Do not rely on that automatic archive behavior for a continuous broadcast lasting 12 hours or longer; see YouTube’s encoder setup and archive guidance.
Consider HLS only if its trade-offs fit
YouTube supports HLS ingest when its encoder and playlist requirements are met. HLS sends video in segments, so YouTube says it has higher latency than continuous RTMP. Its HLS setup guidance describes those requirements. Treat HLS as a deliberate protocol choice when its supported features suit the production, not as a drop-in reconnect fix for an RTMP property-tour stream.
Common errors and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP input disconnects before the source ends | Input-side HTTP connection or source availability | Confirm the input is HTTP, then evaluate the documented HTTP reconnect and retry options for the installed version. |
| HTTP input reaches EOF | Source has ended or reached its end | Use reconnect_at_eof only if the source is expected to become available again; it cannot create new footage from a finished recording. |
| YouTube ingest disconnects while FFmpeg remains running | Output transport, ingest URL/key, network path or stream health | Verify the current Live Control Room URL and key, protocol, outbound capacity and health messages. Do not treat HTTP input flags as output recovery. |
| RTMPS reports an SSL error | Scheme, server, port or TLS/protocol support | Compare the configured address with YouTube’s supplied RTMPS URL and check its troubleshooting guidance about port 443. |
| FFmpeg exits or the tour source stops | Process, capture source or finite input | Inspect the exit and preceding logs; separately test process supervision or source recovery. |
| Stream health degrades during the tour | Upload capacity or unstable connectivity | Measure actual upload capacity during operation, leave YouTube’s recommended headroom, and review Live Control Room diagnostics. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your property tour is prerecorded video rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos without leaving a home computer or connection running.
