If emoji disappear from a PDF made with headless Chrome, check two things first: whether the Chrome runtime can find a font that contains those emoji, and whether print-specific CSS changes the page. Puppeteer’s page.pdf() renders with print media by default, so a page that looks right on screen can produce a different PDF. There is no single fix for every missing-emoji case; isolate the font and print-rendering paths in the environment that generates the file.
Why emoji can disappear or change in a PDF
Emoji are glyphs supplied by fonts, not guaranteed browser artwork. Chrome must find a font with the required glyphs and render it through the PDF pipeline. In Linux containers, CI runners, and WSL, the font setup in your interactive desktop may differ from the environment that launches headless Chrome.
PDF generation also changes the page’s media context. Puppeteer documents that page.pdf() generates a PDF using the print CSS media type. Print styles may hide or restyle content, alter inherited fonts, or change layout. See Puppeteer’s Page.pdf() documentation.
Distinguish the symptom before changing configuration: a missing glyph or tofu box points first toward font coverage or fallback; a visible but monochrome emoji points toward which font rendered it or color-font compatibility; an emoji that vanishes only in the PDF calls for checking both print CSS and runtime fonts.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Reproduce the problem in the actual runtime
Make a minimal test page
Use the exact emoji sequence that fails, plus one that currently renders, in otherwise identical elements. Keep the test small so unrelated scripts, layout, and styles do not obscure the result. Include the failing sequence exactly as used in production: joined emoji and variation selectors can be part of the character sequence, so test the real text rather than a visually similar substitute.
Generate the test PDF inside the same container, CI image, or WSL environment that produces the faulty file. A successful capture on a developer’s desktop does not establish that the deployment runtime has the same fonts or configuration.
Compare the output by placement
If the same character works in one place but not another, reduce the page and compare the elements’ inherited CSS, font family, visibility, and pseudo-elements. A user report in Puppeteer issue #11120 describes selective missing emoji in a Linux/WSL PDF workflow, but it is an individual report, not evidence of a universal Chromium defect or a general root cause.

Check emoji fonts and fallback on Linux
Verify that the intended emoji font is installed in the environment that launches Chrome and that the system’s font discovery can see it. Installing a font somewhere on the host is not sufficient if Chrome runs in a separate container or under a different runtime configuration.

Noto Emoji is an open-source font option. Its maintainers describe Noto Color Emoji as using the CBDT/CBLC color-font format and note that Linux use may require fontconfig adjustments. Follow the project’s current installation and configuration guidance for your distribution; the exact setup is environment-dependent.
- Emoji absent or shown as a box: check that the runtime can discover a font with coverage for the exact glyph or sequence, then confirm the element’s font and fallback styles.
- Emoji visible but monochrome: identify which font rendered it and investigate color-font support across the browser and PDF path. A monochrome glyph is not the same failure as a missing glyph.
- Only particular placements fail: compare inherited font styles and other CSS for the affected and working elements before assuming a browser-wide issue.
Compare print and screen rendering
Inspect @media print rules and the computed styles for the affected elements. Check whether print styles change font-family, set display or visibility, replace content through pseudo-elements, or affect the layout in a way that clips or obscures the symbol.

If the intended PDF should match screen media, Puppeteer documents emulating screen media before exporting. In an existing Puppeteer script, place this immediately before page.pdf():
await page.emulateMediaType('screen');
await page.pdf({ path: 'output.pdf' });
This changes the media type used for the PDF; it does not install a missing font or guarantee that every emoji sequence will render as expected. If the document is meant to follow print styles, fix those styles rather than switching media modes solely to hide the symptom.

If the page depends on web fonts or asynchronously loaded assets, make sure they have finished loading before generating the PDF. Check the computed font family and confirm the page has settled in the same runtime where the failure occurs. Delayed loading is a possible implementation issue to investigate, not an established explanation for every missing-emoji report.

Also open the generated PDF in more than one viewer when practical. If the file looks different between viewers, record the viewer and operating system alongside the reproduction: a display difference after generation is distinct from a glyph that is absent in the PDF itself.
Use image artwork when appearance must be exact
When a particular symbol must have a consistent designed appearance in print, a targeted SVG or raster image can avoid reliance on runtime emoji-font fallback. Test it in the PDF generation environment and the intended viewer; this is an engineering fallback, not a universal browser fix. Keep accessible text when the symbol conveys meaning, rather than making an image the only representation of that meaning.

If Chrome fails to launch, Puppeteer’s Linux troubleshooting guide explains how to inspect shared-library dependencies and lists common launch requirements. That is useful for startup failures, but installing a launch library is not evidence-based remediation for a Chrome process that starts successfully and merely omits emoji.

Chromium source history includes Linux emoji fallback handling, but it does not prescribe a current end-user fix for every distribution. Treat the behavior you can reproduce in your own runtime as the diagnostic evidence, rather than inferring a universal solution from source history: Chromium source change.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot rather than a Puppeteer-generated PDF, ScreenshotNeo can return a website capture with one GET request. For a PDF, pass format=pdf; for an image, choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP as needed. Its capture cleanup accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.
For an image capture, this cURL request saves a WebP file (replace the example URL and use your API key):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for PDF output and other request options. A screenshot service does not replace debugging your own Puppeteer PDF pipeline when that pipeline is the requirement.
ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does installing Noto Color Emoji guarantee that headless Chrome PDFs will show every emoji?
No. The runtime must discover and use the font, and the relevant glyph sequence and PDF rendering path still need testing.
Does the reported Puppeteer issue establish a general Linux emoji bug?
No. It is a closed user report and does not document an accepted general root cause.
