Discord’s failed-message errors have different causes depending on where the message fails. A DM may be blocked by privacy settings, a server message may be stopped by permissions or AutoMod, and a message that worked moments ago may be affected by a Discord outage or a broken client.
Use the section that matches your symptom instead of immediately clearing Discord’s cache. Cache clearing is a general troubleshooting step, but it does not bypass server permissions, membership screening, recipient blocks, or content filters.
First, identify where the message fails

Fix a Discord DM that will not send
If Discord displays Your message could not be delivered, do not assume the recipient has blocked you. Discord lists several possible causes.
1. Check whether you share a server
Discord may not allow a DM when you and the recipient have no mutual server. If you recently left the only server you shared, or the other person left it, that can explain why an existing conversation no longer accepts new messages.

2. Turn on your direct-message setting
On desktop or in a browser:
- Select the cogwheel in the lower-left corner.
- Open Content & Social.
- Under Social permissions, enable Direct messages.
- If Discord asks whether to apply the change to existing servers, apply it to the relevant servers.
This setting controls DMs from non-friends in shared servers. It does not force another user to accept your message if that person has disabled DMs or blocked you.
On mobile:
- Tap your profile icon in the bottom-right.
- Tap the cogwheel in the top-right.
- Open Content & Social.
- Under Server Settings, enable Direct messages.
For a server-specific setting, open that server’s settings drop-down and inspect its individual privacy options. The global and per-server settings can produce different results.
3. Complete server membership screening
Some servers require new members to accept rules or complete other screening steps before they can participate fully. If you have not completed that process, Discord may prevent you from DMing another member of the shared server.
Return to the server and look for its rules or membership-screening prompt. Complete the required steps, then try the DM again.
4. Consider the recipient’s settings or a block
The recipient may accept DMs only from friends. They may also have blocked you. There is no user-side setting that can override either choice.
For reference, Discord’s block controls are available in these places:
- Desktop/browser: open the user’s profile from a server’s Members list, select …, and choose Block. You can also right-click the user in the Friends List or in a DM and select Block.
- Mobile: open a server channel, tap the channel name at the top to open the Members list, select the user, tap …, and choose Block. The same option is available from a profile in Friends or DMs.
If the message fails only with one person while other DMs work, recipient privacy settings, friendship status, or a block are more likely than a network problem.
5. Test the content itself
Discord can prevent an upload when it identifies the content as violating its Community Guidelines. Try sending a short, harmless text-only message such as Test. If that works, remove the attachment, link, or wording from the original message and test each part separately.

Check the channel permission
Ordinary text messages require the channel’s Send Messages permission. If you can read the channel but cannot post, you may have view access without send access.

Ask a moderator or administrator to inspect the channel permissions for your role. In Discord’s permission UI:
- X means the permission is disabled.
- / means it follows the default settings.
- A checkmark means it is enabled.
A role can have Send Messages enabled at the server level but be denied at the channel level. Channel-specific overrides can therefore explain why posting works in one channel but not another.
Check the separate thread permission
Messages inside a thread use Send Messages in Threads. Permission to send ordinary messages in the parent channel does not by itself establish the thread-specific permission.
If you can post in the channel but not in its thread, ask a moderator to check Send Messages in Threads for your role and the thread’s permission overrides.
Check AutoMod and suspicious links
A server message can be rejected by Discord’s AutoMod. The documented triggers include:
- Keyword filters: prohibited words, phrases, or symbols.
- Mention spam: excessive unique mentions.
- Spam content: content reported as spam or resembling reported spam.
Community servers may also block suspicious links. Discord’s filter is intended to stop malware, phishing, stolen Discord credentials, and financial-information scams. Consequently, a failed send does not always indicate a permission or connectivity problem.
Try the following controlled test:
- Send a short message with no link, attachment, or mass mentions.
- If it sends, add the content back in smaller pieces.
- When one link or phrase causes the failure, contact a local community moderator.
There is no documented user-side switch for bypassing a server’s AutoMod filters. If AutoMod blocked a legitimate message, the server’s moderators need to review it.

Slowmode imposes a cooldown after you send a message. It is tracked per user and per channel, so another member’s timer does not affect yours. During the cooldown, you can still read messages, react, and use other channels.
To inspect slowmode on desktop or in a browser:
- Open the target text channel.
- Select the channel’s cogwheel.
- Open Overview.
- Inspect Slowmode.
The available values range from Off through 5, 10, 15, and 30 seconds; 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes; and 1, 2, or 6 hours. A moderator must select Save after changing it.

On mobile, long-press the channel, choose Edit Channel, open Slowmode Cooldown, adjust the dial, and tap Save.
Use the current slowmode bypass permission
Discord now uses one permission named Bypass Slowmode. As of August 7, 2026, guides claiming that Manage Messages, Manage Channel, or Manage Threads still provide the current bypass are outdated. Discord’s transition period for those former bypass permissions ended on February 23, 2026.

- Open the server drop-down.
- Select Server Settings → Roles.
- Select Edit for the relevant role.
- Open Permissions.
- Under Text Channel Permissions, enable Bypass Slowmode.
- Select Save.
On mobile, open the server’s top-left menu, select Roles, choose the role, open Permissions, enable Bypass Slowmode, and tap Save.
When every message fails
Check Discord’s service status
A system-wide Discord problem is separate from a channel permission problem. Check Discord’s official Status page. Also test another network if possible, such as switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data.
Do not treat an old incident as a current outage. Discord’s documented “API Errors involving Messaging” incident was resolved on February 4, 2024, at 1:25 PM PST.

Discord’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends this sequence:
- Fully close Discord, wait 30 seconds, and reopen it.
- Try Discord in the browser or switch between the desktop app and browser.
- Open Settings → App Settings and check for available updates.
- Try another network.
- Clear Discord’s cache.
The documented cache locations are:

Quit Discord before deleting cache files. Cache clearing can help with a damaged local client, but it will not change a server’s AutoMod rules, restore a missing permission, complete membership screening, or undo a block.
Windows: repair a JavaScript startup error separately
If Discord itself shows a JavaScript startup error, Discord documents a more extensive Windows cleanup. Press Windows + R, enter %appdata%, and delete the Discord folder. Repeat with %LocalAppData%, delete the second Discord folder, and reinstall Discord.

Those steps target a JavaScript startup error. They are not a specific fix for failed message delivery.
Check system compatibility on macOS
Discord’s current troubleshooting documentation lists macOS 11 or later as the system requirement and identifies macOS 11 support among its known-issues categories. Do not assume that every macOS release is supported without checking Discord’s current requirements.

- Send a plain-text test message in the same location.
- Try a different channel or DM.
- For a DM, check mutual-server status, your privacy setting, membership screening, and whether the recipient accepts DMs.
- For a server, ask a moderator to check Send Messages, or Send Messages in Threads when applicable.
- Remove links, attachments, prohibited-looking phrases, and mass mentions to test AutoMod or suspicious-link filtering.
- Wait out slowmode rather than repeatedly pressing Send.
- Check Discord Status and test another network.
- Restart, update, and clear the client cache.
- If only one server is affected, contact its moderators. If all messaging is affected after these tests, contact Discord Support with the exact error, affected locations, client type, operating system, and approximate time.
FAQ
Why does Discord say “Your message could not be delivered”?
For a DM, the usual documented causes include no shared server, disabled direct messages, incomplete membership screening, the recipient accepting DMs only from friends, a block, or content that Discord prevents from being uploaded. Test a plain-text message and check the relevant privacy and server settings.
Why can I read a Discord channel but not send messages?
Reading and posting are separate capabilities. The channel requires the Send Messages permission for ordinary messages. A channel override may deny it even when your role has the permission elsewhere.
Why can I send in a channel but not in its thread?
Threads use the separate Send Messages in Threads permission. Ask a server moderator to check that permission and any thread-specific overrides.

Slowmode imposes a per-user cooldown in a channel after you send a message. Wait for the timer to expire. A moderator can inspect the channel’s Slowmode setting, or grant the current Bypass Slowmode permission to an appropriate role.
Will clearing Discord’s cache fix every failed-message error?
No. Cache clearing is a general client troubleshooting step. It cannot bypass AutoMod, suspicious-link filtering, membership screening, privacy settings, blocks, or missing channel permissions.
Is there a Discord command that fixes failed messages?
No command is documented in Discord’s current troubleshooting guidance for repairing failed message sends. The supported fixes involve settings, permissions, content changes, client or network troubleshooting, status checks, and contacting moderators or Discord Support.
The Bottom Line
Start by testing a plain-text message in another location. A DM failure usually points to privacy, mutual-server status, screening, blocking, or content restrictions; a server failure usually points to permissions, AutoMod, suspicious links, or slowmode. If messages fail everywhere, check Discord Status, try another network, restart or update the client, and clear its cache. Contact a server moderator for server-side filters and Discord Support for an account-wide or client-wide problem.
