Fiverr is usually the more direct fit when you can buy a clearly defined service from an existing package; Upwork is often a better workflow fit when you need to scope custom work and review proposals. Neither platform’s workflow establishes that its freelancers produce better work. Compare the specific offers, contract terms, and final costs before deciding.

How Fiverr and Upwork work

Fiverr: browse and buy a Gig

Fiverr organizes many services as seller-created listings called Gigs. A buyer reviews the available offer and package details, selects an option, and pays for the service. If a suitable package already exists, this can avoid writing a complete job post. Read the scope, delivery details, and revision terms closely: a listed service is not automatically a match for every version of a task. Fiverr’s client guide explains the buyer workflow.

Upwork: define work and form a contract

Upwork supports a more proposal- and contract-oriented process. Clients can browse talent or review proposals, then form a contract and fund work. The platform’s comparison guide describes hourly and milestone arrangements, as well as freelancer applications and client invitations. This can suit work that needs custom scoping, but the right arrangement depends on the project and the contract options available to the account. Upwork’s 2026 comparison guide outlines the workflow.

Which platform fits your project?

Your situation Workflow to consider Check before proceeding
You know what you need and find a matching, clearly scoped service Fiverr Gig and package browsing Deliverables, revisions, timing, seller details, and checkout total
You need to explain a custom project and compare proposed approaches Upwork job and proposal workflow Contract type, proposal requirements shown in your account, and client fees
You sell a repeatable service and want buyers to find a packaged offer Fiverr Gig-led listing workflow Whether your listing matches buyer needs and the current seller terms
You want to pursue posted work and discuss terms with a client Upwork proposal or invitation workflow Application requirements shown in your account and the contract-specific fee

These are workflow-based fits, not evidence that either marketplace has higher-quality workers, better earnings, or greater success rates. No suitable named market-size, earnings, or success-rate statistic was established in the official sources cited here.

Compare the fees that apply to your transaction

There is no single platform percentage that captures what both sides pay. Client charges and freelancer deductions are different, and actual costs can depend on the plan, payment method, eligibility, contract, and transaction. The figures below come from official sources checked on October 7, 2026 UTC; platform terms can change, so use the amount displayed before you pay or accept a contract.

Client fees

Platform What the cited source says What to verify
Fiverr Fiverr’s current order-payment FAQ says the service fee is 5.5% of the purchase amount, plus $3.50 for orders under $200. Check the checkout total before confirming payment. Fiverr has an older help page stating 5.5% plus $3 for orders under $100, which conflicts with the newer FAQ; the current FAQ is the basis for the figures above. Fiverr’s current order-payment FAQ · Fiverr’s client guide
Upwork Upwork’s Basic-plan help page says the Client Marketplace Fee is up to 7.99%. It describes a 3% fee for qualifying U.S. clients paying by bank account; Business Plus may have a higher fee. Confirm the fee for your plan and payment method. Upwork also says a one-time Contract Initiation Fee can vary and is shown before contract formation; its legal terms do not establish one universal amount. Upwork’s client-fee help page · Upwork Legal Center

Freelancer fees

Platform What the cited source says Important qualification
Upwork Upwork states a freelancer service-fee range of 0%–15% per contract. The fee is fixed when the contract begins. Enterprise and Direct Contracts have exceptions or different arrangements. Upwork’s freelancer-fee help page
Fiverr Fiverr’s Payment Terms say a seller receives earnings equal to 80% of the purchase amount for each successfully completed order. This describes the standard order terms cited, not necessarily every Fiverr product or special case. Fiverr’s Payment Terms

To compare a real project, look at the buyer’s final checkout amount and the amount the freelancer would net under the applicable contract terms. Do not treat buyer fees, freelancer fees, taxes, payment-processing charges, membership plans, initiation fees, or optional tools as one interchangeable platform fee.

A practical way to choose

  1. Decide whether the work is package-ready. If a Fiverr Gig describes the exact deliverables and boundaries you need, compare its package and seller details. If the work needs discovery, negotiation, or a tailored scope, consider whether an Upwork proposal process better matches that need.
  2. Choose how you want to evaluate candidates. Fiverr’s purchase flow centers on listed offers; Upwork’s described workflow includes browsing talent or reviewing proposals. Compare the specific people and terms available, rather than assuming one workflow guarantees a better result.
  3. Match the contract structure to the work. Upwork describes hourly and milestone arrangements. Confirm that the contract available to you supports how you want progress, funding, and approvals handled.
  4. Calculate both sides’ costs. Check the buyer total at checkout or before contract formation, including any initiation fee shown. If you are freelancing, check the net amount and the fee that applies to your contract or order.
  5. Review account-specific terms before committing. Check any application requirements, payment-protection or dispute features, and administrative terms that apply to your account and transaction. The platforms’ general workflow descriptions do not establish that every feature applies to every user.
