To control AI token costs, optimize the total cost of completing a task—not just the price per million tokens. Compare models on real workloads, trim unnecessary input, reuse stable context through caching, route deferrable work to suitable lower-cost tiers, and track the tokens each request actually consumes.
1. Compare total task cost, not headline token prices
A model with a lower per-token rate is not automatically cheaper for your workload. Models can tokenize the same text differently and may use different amounts of input, output, or reasoning tokens. As OpenAI puts it, “A lower price per million tokens does not necessarily produce a lower total cost.”
Run representative tasks through the models you are considering. For each completed task, record token usage, cost, answer quality, latency, and reliability. Include retries, multiple completions, tool calls, and reasoning usage where applicable. The useful comparison is the cost of a result that meets your requirements—not the cost of an abstract million-token unit.
2. Send less unnecessary input
Every part of a request that the API counts can affect cost. Remove repeated instructions, avoid resending reference material that has not changed when a cache is available, and summarize or preprocess long documents when doing so preserves the information the task needs. Splitting oversized inputs can also help when the work can be handled in separate, useful steps.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not estimate API usage by word count alone. “A token count is not the same as a word count,” according to the OpenAI Help Center. Tokenization varies with the text, language, and encoding. A complete structured request may also include message boundaries, tool definitions, schemas, images, and files; a plain-text counter may not reflect all of it. Check request-level usage data for the actual count.
3. Cache stable context that you reuse
If many requests share the same instructions or reference material, prompt caching can reduce the cost of eligible repeated input. Keep the reusable prefix unchanged and place request-specific or changing information after it. A changed prefix may prevent a match, so verify cache hits in usage data instead of assuming the provider reused the context.

OpenAI’s prompt-caching guide states a maximum discount of up to 95% on eligible cached input. That is a stated maximum, not a guaranteed saving: realized rates depend on the model and current pricing, and a cache hit is not assured. Cached input does not reduce output generation, and cached tokens still count against token-per-minute limits. Google separately documents implicit caching for Gemini 2.5 and newer models, as well as explicit cache objects with time-to-live-based storage pricing; check the provider’s current requirements and costs before changing an implementation.
4. Use lower-cost processing only when its tradeoffs fit
Some workloads can wait or tolerate less predictable completion. Google’s documentation, last updated September 1, 2026, describes the following Gemini API processing options. These terms apply to Google’s documented services and should not be assumed to apply to other providers or remain unchanged.

| Option | Documented cost and behavior | Suitable when |
|---|---|---|
| Batch | 50% of Standard pricing; target turnaround of up to 24 hours. | The work can be queued and does not need an immediate result. |
| Flex inference | 50% of Standard pricing; synchronous, cost-optimized, and sheddable/best-effort. | A synchronous response is useful, but the workload can tolerate the documented reliability tradeoff. |
| Priority | 75% to 100% above Standard pricing. | The workload justifies paying more for the service tier’s latency or reliability characteristics. |
Compare the discount with acceptable turnaround time and the risk of delayed or shed work. Google also reports up to 88% fewer input tokens for long-form video using agentic processing, with savings varying by query complexity and sampling depth. That is a modality-specific claim, not a general promise of text-token savings.
5. Limit outputs and monitor actual usage
Set output-token limits to suit the task: a short classification does not need the same allowance as a detailed report. Limits can prevent unnecessarily long generations, but set them high enough to avoid cutting off useful answers. Measure input, output, cached input, and reasoning tokens by workload so you can see which paths drive spend.

A short visible answer may still have used substantial tokens. Reasoning tokens can be billed as output even when they do not appear in the response, and Google notes that agentic loops can also consume intermediate input and reasoning tokens. Use provider dashboards and request-level usage data to find costly paths, then test changes against answer quality, latency, and reliability rather than optimizing spend in isolation.

- Choose a representative workload: include typical requests and the harder cases that matter to your users.
- Capture a baseline: record cost per completed task, input and output usage, cached and reasoning tokens where reported, quality, latency, retries, and failures.
- Change one cost driver at a time: test a different model, shorter context, caching, a processing tier, or a tighter output limit.
- Compare results against requirements: keep a change only if its savings preserve the quality, turnaround, and reliability the task needs.
- Recheck provider pricing and terms: model rates, token categories, and service features change. Confirm current details on the provider’s pricing and documentation pages before budgeting.
Google summarizes the tradeoff this way: “The Gemini API offers a variety of optimization mechanisms to help you balance speed, cost, and reliability based on your specific workload needs.”
