Fitbit account migration to Google is no longer optional. The deadline for using Fitbit with a standalone Fitbit account was May 19, 2026. Since that date has passed, Fitbit access requires a Google Account, although Google says some users may still be able to migrate while legacy-data deletion is being processed.

Google now refers to the replacement app as the Google Health app. The migration changes which account owns your Fitbit data; a Fitbit account created with a Gmail address was not automatically migrated.

What changed on May 19, 2026?

Existing Fitbit users could continue signing in with a Fitbit account only until May 19, 2026. After that cutoff, access to Fitbit requires moving the Fitbit account to a Google Account.

Google also requires a Google Account to sign up for the Google Health app and activate newly released Fitbit and Pixel devices. The change applies even if the email address on the Fitbit account is a Gmail address.

How to migrate a standard Fitbit account

Google documents migration as an in-app process.

  1. Open the Google Health app.
  2. Log in with your existing Fitbit account.
  3. Look for the notification asking you to move your account to access Google Health.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Google does not document one fixed button label for the first notification or every later screen, so the wording may differ between app versions. The transfer takes a few minutes.

You can review and change Fitbit data and setup during the process, including which historical data is moved. You can cancel until the final step. Once migration is completed, it cannot be undone.

If your Fitbit account uses Gmail

A Fitbit account made with a Gmail address is still a Fitbit account. The Gmail address does not prove that the account has already been transferred to Google.

To check for the migration prompt:

  1. Sign in to the Google Health app with the Gmail address used by Fitbit.
  2. Tap Settings in the top-right corner.
  3. If a migration notification appears, tap it and follow the instructions.

Before the deadline, Google allowed users to keep using a Gmail address for Fitbit “as long as it’s supported,” but that did not remove the requirement to migrate.

Which Google Account should you use?

Choose the personal Google Account you want to own and manage your Fitbit data. A Google Workspace account cannot be linked to Google Health. If you receive an error saying the selected account is not compatible, Google recommends choosing a different Google Account or creating a new one.

After migration, Fitbit data is associated with the selected Google Account and managed through Google Account settings and the Google Health app. Check the account carefully before completing the final step because the transfer is permanent.

What happened to accounts that were not migrated?

Google allowed users who did not migrate to download or delete their data until July 15, 2026. From that date, Google began processing deletion of legacy data. The deletion process may take time, and Google says some users may still be able to migrate during that period.

Do not assume that an old Fitbit login will continue working while deletion is underway. The May 19 access cutoff has passed. If the Google Health app still presents a migration route, use it promptly; if it does not, contact Google Customer Support.

Exporting Google Health data

Once the data is associated with a Google Account, Google says it can be exported from Google Account → Google Health Data and Privacy settings. Exportable categories include activity, body, food, sleep, and related health data.

Google states that Fitbit health and wellness data remains separate from Google Ads and is not used for Google Ads. Using Google Health requires acceptance of both the Google Terms of Service and the Google Health Additional Terms of Service. Google lists the Additional Terms as last modified on May 19, 2026.

Family accounts do not all migrate together

Moving a parent’s Fitbit account does not automatically transfer every person in a Fitbit family. Google’s migration guidance says children under 13, or under the applicable age in their country, can move with the parent; older children and adults must migrate independently.

  1. Open the Google Health app.
  2. On Move your family to Google, tap Get started.
  3. Review the people listed in the Fitbit family.
  4. Tap Continue.

Phone requirements

Google’s setup requirements list iOS 16.4 or higher for iPhone and Android 11 or higher for Android phones. Update the phone before troubleshooting the account transfer, since an unsupported operating system can prevent setup even when the account itself is eligible.

What to do if migration fails

  1. Confirm that you are using the correct Fitbit login and the intended personal Google Account.
  2. Do not use a Google Workspace account.
  3. Update the Google Health app and make sure the phone runs iOS 16.4 or later, or Android 11 or later.
  4. Open the Google Health app, sign in with the Fitbit account, and follow any notification to move the account.
  5. If Google says the account is incompatible, use a different Google Account or create one.
  6. If you are eligible but still cannot sign in or migrate, contact Google Customer Support.

Migration transfers the account; it is not a new device-pairing procedure. Re-pairing a tracker or resetting the device will not move historical Fitbit data to Google.

FAQ

Is Fitbit migration to Google mandatory?

Yes. Standalone Fitbit-account access ended on May 19, 2026. Fitbit access now requires a Google Account, although Google says some legacy users may still see a migration option while data deletion is being processed.

Does a Fitbit account made with Gmail already count as migrated?

No. A Fitbit account can use a Gmail address without being linked to a Google Account. Sign in to the Google Health app, open Settings, and look for the migration notification.

Can I undo the migration?

No. Google says cancellation is available only until the final step. After the transfer is completed, it cannot be undone.

Can I use a Google Workspace account?

No. Google Workspace accounts cannot be linked to Google Health. Use another personal Google Account or create a new one.

Will my Fitbit family migrate automatically?

No. Children below the applicable age can move with a qualifying parent, but older children and adults must migrate their own accounts.

Can I still recover data after July 15, 2026?

Google began processing legacy-data deletions on July 15, 2026. The process may take time, and some users may still be able to migrate, but Google does not guarantee that legacy data remains available. Try the Google Health migration flow or contact Customer Support immediately.

The Bottom Line

Fitbit’s standalone account era has ended: the mandatory Google migration deadline was May 19, 2026, and legacy-data deletion processing began on July 15, 2026. Open the Google Health app, use the migration notification, verify the destination Google Account, and export important health data before completing any irreversible transfer.

Google’s migration and deadline guidance and Google Health’s privacy FAQ contain the current official details.
