The Fitbit Ace LTE’s clearest announced additions since launch are Tap to Pay and new games in Google’s 2024 back-to-school update, followed by family calling, messaging, and challenges described by Google in May 2026. The watch’s core connected features—including calls, messages, location, and games—require Ace Pass. Google currently limits setup and use to the United States, excluding Alaska and U.S. territories.
What features does the Fitbit Ace LTE have?
Google describes the Ace LTE as a children’s smartwatch with built-in LTE, GPS location sharing, activity tracking, games, School Time, an alarm clock, and calling and messaging with up to 20 contacts. Google marks these core features as requiring Ace Pass in its technical specifications. The watch does not need a child’s phone for its LTE connection, but setup requires a compatible parent phone, Wi-Fi, and Ace Pass.
Google’s May 29, 2024 launch announcement says parents add the contacts who can reach the watch and that the product has no ads or third-party apps. That approval model is important: the Ace LTE is not an open messaging device where a child can freely contact any number.
Features Google announced after launch
Tap to Pay and new games
In its 2024 back-to-school update, Google highlighted Tap to Pay, new games, and school settings. These were additions or updates called out in that announcement, not a complete changelog; it does not establish that every game or setting first appeared then. The current specifications also list Tap to Pay, but actual availability can depend on the device’s current software and setup.

Family calling, messaging, and challenges
A Google Health Community announcement dated May 13, 2026 describes “Family Matters” features. Siblings in the same Google Family group can call and message one another once they have been added as contacts in the Ace app. This extends the contact-approved model; it is not unrestricted friend-to-friend messaging.
The announcement also describes family challenges that can unlock early access to games and rewards. It does not establish a comprehensive rollout schedule or confirm availability in every region. Check the Ace app and current device software for what is available to your family.

Does Fitbit Ace LTE need a subscription?
Yes. Ace Pass is required for LTE and the watch’s core connected features, including calling and messaging, location features, and games, according to Google’s specifications. The service is therefore a necessary part of the cost of using the watch as intended, rather than an optional upgrade for only one feature.

Do Fitbit Ace LTE bands add features?
They can do more than change the watch’s appearance. Google’s Ace Band listing says attaching a band can unlock associated experiences, including activity challenges, collectible items for the eejie, and a Noodle. The specific experience may vary by band, so check the listing for the exact accessory rather than assuming all bands unlock the same content.
What do you need to set up and update the watch?
- Location eligibility: Google says setup or use requires a U.S. Google Account and is limited to the United States, excluding Alaska and U.S. territories. See Google’s Ace LTE setup and availability guidance.
- Parent phone: Google lists most Android phones running Android 11 or newer and iPhones running iOS 16 or newer as compatible.
- Wi-Fi for updates: Software updates require a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network; 5 GHz Wi-Fi is not compatible with the update process.
- Ace Pass: The watch needs Ace Pass for setup and connected use.
Google notes that some features require the latest software. Battery-life figures on the specifications page are approximate and based on tests using pre-production hardware and software, so they are not a guarantee of everyday runtime.

Is the Ace LTE a fit for your family?
When comparing a connected watch for a child, focus on who can contact the child and how parents approve contacts; the recurring connectivity cost; location features and regional limits; school controls; whether games and activity incentives suit your family; and compatibility and battery expectations. Google’s documentation describes the Ace LTE’s features, but it does not establish a current ranking against other children’s watches.
