What Nova and density settings mean
Nova is Mozilla’s name for Firefox’s refreshed interface. Mozilla announced the redesign rollout on September 29, 2026, and its Add-ons Community Blog identifies Firefox 157 as the release that shipped Nova. Mozilla Add-ons Community Blog
Density controls the size of interface elements rather than changing the content of web pages. Mozilla describes Compact as reducing the size of tabs and toolbar controls so more of the screen is available to the web. Default means the ordinary spacing shown when Compact has not been selected. Mozilla’s materials do not give pixel dimensions or a complete, control-by-control comparison, so the difference should not be interpreted as a uniform change to every part of Nova. Mozilla’s September 29, 2026 design announcement
Compact vs. Default at a glance
| What you’re comparing | Compact | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Tabs and toolbar controls | Mozilla says these are smaller. | Ordinary spacing when Compact is not selected; exact dimensions are not stated by Mozilla. |
| Room for web pages | Designed to give web pages more of the screen; no quantified space saving is published. | Does not apply Compact’s stated size reduction; no quantified difference is published. |
| Where to choose it in Firefox 157+ | Settings > Appearance > Window density > Compact. | Leave Compact unselected in Window density. |
Mozilla’s explanation establishes Compact’s purpose, but does not document precisely how every interface area behaves across operating systems, themes, or other configurations. Theme authors are advised to check themes under Compact density, but that guidance is not a guarantee of identical behavior for every theme. Mozilla Add-ons Community Blog

If you’re using Firefox 156 or earlier
Mozilla says Compact was removed from the Customize panel in Firefox 89. Its current support guidance says versions through Firefox 156 can expose the old option with an advanced preference, labeled Compact (not supported). Mozilla warns that changing advanced preferences can seriously affect Firefox stability, security, and performance. Proceed only if you understand that warning and follow Mozilla’s instructions carefully. Mozilla Support: Enable Compact mode in Firefox
- Enter
about:configin the address bar and acknowledge the warning. - Search for
browser.compactmode.showand set it totrue. - Open the menu and choose More tools, then Customize toolbar.
