Buy based on your TV and the exact model, not the brand name alone. For an HD-only screen, compare the current HD sticks; for a 4K TV, compare 4K models and check which HDR formats your television supports. Then weigh the included remote, voice-assistant ecosystem, Wi-Fi specifications, and current price.

At a glance: which stick fits your setup?

What matters most Fire TV Stick Roku Streaming Stick How to decide
HD television Amazon lists the Fire TV Stick HD (2026) as an HD model. Roku’s 2025 Streaming Stick (HD), model 3840R, supports up to 1080p. Choose an HD model unless you expect to move the stick to a 4K TV soon. Amazon’s specifications and Roku’s HD product page identify the models and capabilities.
4K with Dolby Vision Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (2025) supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Streaming Stick 4K supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+; Roku dates its 3820X hardware entry to 2021. Compare these if your TV supports Dolby Vision. The Roku model is older despite still appearing in current Roku comparisons. Amazon specifications, Roku Streaming Stick 4K, and Roku’s hardware table.
4K with HDR10+, not Dolby Vision Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (2025) supports HDR10+ as well as Dolby Vision. Streaming Stick Plus (2025) supports 4K and HDR10+; Roku’s comparison does not list Dolby Vision for this model. Do not assume the newer Roku Plus is equivalent to Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K: the 4K model lists Dolby Vision, while the Plus is a separate newer model. Roku’s lineup comparison and Amazon specifications.
Wireless and remote Amazon lists Wi-Fi 6 for the 2025 4K Plus and 2026 HD Stick; Fire remote features vary by model. Roku highlights long-range Wi-Fi on Streaming Stick 4K. Its voice remote includes TV power, volume, and mute controls that work with most TVs. Compare the precise model and remote in the listing. These specifications alone do not show which stick will perform better in your home. Roku 4K details, Roku Voice Remote, and Amazon specifications.

Start with your TV’s resolution and HDR support

If your television is HD-only

An HD stick is a reasonable match for a television that cannot display 4K. Roku’s 2025 Streaming Stick (HD), model 3840R, outputs up to 1080p, uses dual-band Wi-Fi, and is described as TV-powered. Amazon identifies its Fire TV Stick HD (2026) as an HD model, not a 4K device. Roku says its sticks work with a TV that has an HDMI port and that playback follows the TV’s supported resolution. Roku Streaming Stick (HD) and Amazon model specifications.

If your television supports 4K

Choose among specific 4K models rather than assuming any stick in either product family outputs 4K. For Roku Streaming Stick 4K, the TV’s HDMI input must support HDCP 2.2 for 4K, and compatible hardware and content are required for 4K, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+ playback. A TV that lacks the relevant HDR format cannot show that format’s benefit. Roku Streaming Stick 4K product details.

HDR labels are not interchangeable. Amazon lists Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and HLG on the 2025 Fire TV Stick 4K Plus. Roku lists Dolby Vision, HDR10/10+, and HLG on Streaming Stick 4K, while its newer Streaming Stick Plus comparison lists HDR10+ but not Dolby Vision. Check the TV manual and the HDR formats available in the content you watch before paying extra for a format. Amazon specifications and Roku lineup comparison.

Know which generation you are comparing

Similar product names conceal different feature sets and release years. Amazon’s specification page identifies the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus and 4K Select as 2025 models, the 4K Max (2nd Gen) as a 2023 model, and the Fire TV Stick HD as a 2026 model. Roku’s lineup includes a 2025 HD stick and a 2025 Streaming Stick Plus, alongside Streaming Stick 4K hardware dated to 2021. Compare the full model name and generation on the product listing rather than relying on “Fire TV Stick” or “Roku stick.” Amazon device specifications, Amazon Fire TV lineup information, Roku lineup comparison, and Roku hardware table.

Notable current model distinctions

  • Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (2025): Amazon lists Fire OS 8, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Atmos, and Wi-Fi 6. Amazon specifications.
  • Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025): Amazon lists it as a 2025 model; its developer overview describes it as an affordable 4K option with major content providers and Alexa. “Affordable” is not a guarantee it costs less than a competing stick at the time you shop. Amazon Fire TV lineup information.
  • Roku Streaming Stick Plus (2025), 3830X family: This is a distinct 4K model with HDR10+ in Roku’s comparison. Roku lineup comparison and Roku model identification.
  • Roku Streaming Stick 4K, 3820 family: Roku’s support page identifies model 3820; its product page lists 3820R2. It supports up to 4K/60 and lists Dolby Vision, HDR10/10+, and HLG with compatible equipment and content. Roku’s hardware table dates the 3820X entry to 2021. Roku model identification, Roku product details, and Roku hardware table.

Choose the remote and ecosystem you will actually use

Roku’s product page specifies a voice remote with TV power, volume, and mute controls that work with most TVs. Roku also lists compatibility with Alexa, Google Home, and Apple AirPlay/HomeKit. Fire TV models offer Alexa support, but remote features vary by generation, so confirm the exact remote bundled with the Fire stick you are considering. • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

If someone in the household already uses a voice assistant or smart-home platform, that existing setup may be a useful tie-breaker. Do not assume that every remote supports the same commands or controls; check the model’s included accessories and compatibility details.

Check Wi-Fi, power, and physical fit

Wi-Fi labels describe different specifications, not a head-to-head speed test. Amazon specifies Wi-Fi 6 on the 2025 Fire TV Stick 4K Plus and the 2026 HD Stick. Roku describes long-range Wi-Fi on Streaming Stick 4K and dual-band Wi-Fi on its 2025 HD stick. Your router, signal strength, interference, and home layout affect the connection, so these labels alone cannot establish which stick will stream more reliably in a particular room. Roku describes its 2025 HD stick and Amazon describes its 2026 Fire TV Stick HD as TV-powered; do not generalize that to every model. Check the package’s cable and adapter details and whether your TV’s USB port can supply power. Roku lists a USB-C-to-USB-A power cable with the HD model. Roku says Streaming Stick 4K has a slim form that does not block neighboring HDMI ports, but check the TV’s port layout and the exact model’s included accessories if clearance is tight.
