Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNeither streaming stick is proven easier to troubleshoot overall. Amazon’s Fire TV guidance gives a particularly explicit sequence for a remote that will not pair, while Roku’s guidance is strong at sorting intermittent problems from constant ones and using a settings-preserving system restart. The easier option depends on the fault—and whether your remote and network still work.
How to choose the right troubleshooting path
Start with the symptom, not a factory reset. A remote that does not respond, a buffering stream, a frozen screen, a blank picture, and a single app that will not load can have different causes and need different fixes. Both companies organize help by issue type: Amazon’s Fire TV help and Roku Support.
On the official help pages reviewed, there is no comparative usability test, repair-success rate, or measured time-to-fix showing that one brand is easier overall. The comparison here is about how clearly the published instructions guide you through likely fixes—not how often the devices fail or how reliably a fix works.
Remote problems: Fire TV has the more explicit recovery checklist
Fire TV Stick
Amazon’s general remote guidance offers a clear progression: check the batteries, move within 10 feet (3 m) of the Fire TV, restart the device, wait for an on-screen remote-detection message, then hold Home for 10 seconds. If that does not work, Amazon points to remote-specific troubleshooting or reset instructions and lists the Fire TV mobile app as an alternative. Some remote generations have different reset procedures, and not every remote supports the troubleshooting mode described in Amazon’s guidance. Follow the instructions for your remote rather than assuming every button sequence applies. Amazon’s Fire TV remote help

Roku Streaming Stick
Roku’s remote guide distinguishes between remote types and includes pairing instructions. For Streaming Stick owners, it also calls out possible wireless interference: use the wireless receiver built into the included USB power cable, and check whether your stick came with Roku’s free HDMI extender. Roku describes the extender as an option for reducing interference; it is not a fix for Wi-Fi, power, apps, or every remote fault.
There is an important limit to phone-app recovery: Roku states, “No, you need a Roku remote to connect your Roku device to Wi-Fi.” If the player is offline and the remote is missing, the app may not be a usable substitute. The detailed Roku instructions cited here are from Canadian support pages, and steps can vary by model and remote generation. Roku’s remote troubleshooting and pairing guide

Wi-Fi and buffering: Fire TV exposes a device-side diagnostic
Fire TV Stick
Amazon’s Wi-Fi guidance begins with the Network Diagnostics or network-status tool in Settings. It then moves through less disruptive checks before suggesting a factory reset:
- Open the network status or Network Diagnostics tool in Settings and check the connection.
- Power-cycle the Fire TV by disconnecting power for 10 seconds.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and back on, then forget and reconnect to the network if needed.
- Restart the modem and router. If other devices are also offline, investigate the home network rather than assuming the stick is the cause.
- Consider a factory reset only if the earlier steps fail and you can sign in and set up the device again.

Roku Streaming Stick
For intermittent jerky or pixelated video, Roku advises checking whether streaming on another device using the same network shows the same problem. If you need to reset the wireless connection, Roku places that option under Settings > Advanced system settings; you will need to set up the wireless network again afterward. That is a network reset, not a factory reset of the Roku device. Roku’s system restart and troubleshooting guide
Frozen or intermittent behavior: Roku explains the least disruptive reset
Roku advises first noting whether a problem happens constantly or only sometimes, then checking likely causes such as remote batteries, network behavior, and the HDMI connection. It calls a system restart “the least invasive reset method” and says it will not affect settings. You can restart by unplugging power for at least 10 seconds, or through Settings if the remote or Roku mobile app can control the player. Roku Support’s system restart instructions

Verdict: it depends on the fault
Fire TV has the more explicit remote-recovery checklist in the official pages reviewed, including an on-device network diagnostic path and a listed mobile-app alternative. Roku’s guidance is especially clear about symptom triage and a system restart that preserves settings. If the remote is the problem, Fire TV’s published sequence is easier to follow; if the device is freezing intermittently, Roku’s restart advice is straightforward. Neither comparison establishes that one stick is easier for every owner.
