FinderBack adds Back and Forward actions to Finder’s right-click context menu, so you can navigate without moving the pointer to Finder’s toolbar. The project documents a packaged app for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 26 or later; it requires Accessibility permission and may need first-launch approval in macOS settings.
What FinderBack adds to Finder
FinderBack is a macOS utility that attaches a small navigation bar to Finder’s context menu. Right-click empty space in a Finder window to access Back and Forward. The controls can appear as stacked text labels or compact arrow buttons. A menu-bar settings panel includes an optional Open at Login setting.
The project author introduced the utility as a way to avoid moving the cursor back to Finder’s toolbar for navigation. The announcement describes that use case; the FinderBack repository documents the controls and settings.
How its navigation works
According to the repository, FinderBack uses a listen-only mouse and keyboard event tap. It reads accessibility roles and the Finder context menu’s position and size, then sends Finder the Back and Forward keyboard shortcuts: ⌘[ and ⌘]. This is the maintainer’s description of the app’s mechanism, not an independent technical inspection.
#1 Best Overall
- WIRELESS, RECHARGEABLE CONVENIENCE — Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad connects wirelessly to your Mac, iPad, or iPhone via Bluetooth. And the rechargeable internal battery means no loose batteries to replace.
- WORKS WITH MAC, IPAD, OR IPHONE — It pairs quickly with your device so you can get to work right away.
- ENHANCED TYPING EXPERIENCE — Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience. Its extended layout features document navigation controls for quick scrolling and full-size arrow keys. The numeric keypad is ideal for spreadsheets and finance applications.
- GO WEEKS WITHOUT CHARGING — The incredibly long-lasting internal battery will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges. (Battery life varies by use.) Comes with a Lightning to USB Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB port on your Mac.
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS — Requires a Bluetooth-enabled Mac with macOS 10.12.4 or later, an iPad with iPadOS 13.4 or later, or an iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 10.3 or later.
Compatibility and permissions
The repository says the ready-to-run download is for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 26 or later, and that the app was tested on Apple Silicon with macOS 26. Intel Macs are not supported. FinderBack also requires Accessibility permission.
Because the app is not Developer ID-signed or notarized, macOS may block it on first launch. The repository directs users to approve it through System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.

Install the download or build from source
Ready-to-run app
- Get the digital download and installation instructions from the official FinderBack repository. Its listed price is $9.99 USD as a one-time purchase; check the repository and checkout for current price and availability.
- Open the app. If macOS blocks it because it is not Developer ID-signed or notarized, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway and approve the first launch.
- Grant FinderBack Accessibility permission when prompted or when directed by macOS. The utility needs this permission to interact with Finder.
- In Finder, right-click empty space in a window and use the Back or Forward control. If you want FinderBack available after login, enable Open at Login in its menu-bar settings.
Build from source
The repository also offers source code under the MIT license and provides a build script. Its stated build target is Apple Silicon and macOS 26. Rebuilding may require granting Accessibility permission again. This route avoids buying the ready-to-run download, but is intended for readers comfortable following build instructions.
Documented limits and privacy claims
The repository identifies several limitations: multi-monitor behavior is unverified, the navigation bar is always dark, and its row height does not scale with the system’s large-text setting. These are the project’s disclosures, not the result of independent compatibility testing.

The maintainers say FinderBack does not read filenames, paths, or files; makes no network requests; has no analytics or crash reporting; and saves preferences locally. Those statements come from the project README and should be understood as maintainer claims, not as an independent security audit.

If you want to navigate with physical mouse side buttons rather than a Finder context-menu control, SideNav is a separate option. Its project README describes a macOS menu-bar app that remaps mouse side buttons to Back and Forward shortcuts. SideNav documents macOS 13 or later, Accessibility permission, and mouse buttons that register as HID 3 and 4. FinderBack and SideNav address different interaction preferences; SideNav’s hardware requirement does not apply to FinderBack.
