cros.tech was presented as a searchable way to look up ChromeOS device information and recovery images. A lookup is different from checking the version installed on your Chromebook: Google’s built-in Settings page shows that version and provides the normal update check. For recovery, use Google’s current instructions and confirm the image for your exact device rather than relying on a retail name alone.
What cros.tech was described as doing
A July 31, 2020 article by Chrome Unboxed described cros.tech as organizing ChromeOS update-server information into a searchable interface, with retail device names and recovery-image links. That description is historical: it does not establish the site’s current features, ownership, data freshness, or whether every image link still works. Treat it as a possible device-lookup aid, not as the authority for your Chromebook’s installed version or recovery procedure.
How to check the ChromeOS version installed on your Chromebook
- Open Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Read the version shown under Google ChromeOS.
- To check for a routine update, select Check for updates on that page.
This checks the software on the Chromebook you are using. It is distinct from looking up information associated with a device model. Google’s instructions are in Update your Chromebook’s operating system.
How to check whether your Chromebook is still scheduled for updates
To find the device’s last scheduled update date, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details > Update schedule. Google’s update schedule is device-specific, so do not infer support from a retail model name alone. See Auto Update policy for Google’s guidance.

When to use a recovery image
Recovery is for reinstalling ChromeOS when the operating system is damaged or the Chromebook cannot start normally; it is not the usual way to install an update. Google summarizes the operation this way: “Recovery removes and reinstalls the OS.” The process permanently erases the Chromebook’s local hard drive, including downloaded files, so back up anything important before proceeding. If the Chromebook still works, restart it and try less destructive troubleshooting before recovery.
Choose a recovery method
Google documents USB recovery and, on some newer Chromebooks, recovery over an internet connection. Older devices may not support internet recovery. The available instructions do not provide a device-by-device support matrix, so follow the recovery screen and Google’s current directions for your model.

| Method | What you need | Availability and data impact |
|---|---|---|
| Internet recovery | An internet connection; a second computer and USB drive are not required for this route. | Available on some newer Chromebooks, but not necessarily older ones. Recovery erases local data. |
| USB recovery | Another Chromebook, or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome; Chromebook Recovery Utility; and a USB flash drive holding at least 8 GB. | Use the recovery utility to create the media. The USB drive is erased during media creation, and recovery erases local data on the Chromebook. |
Google’s full procedure and current requirements are in Recover your Chromebook. For USB recovery, the utility asks for your Chromebook model number, which is shown on the error screen. The documented minimum for the USB drive is 8 GB; Google does not specify a brand or particular model. If you need the USB method, use a drive that meets that capacity requirement and expect its contents to be erased when recovery media is made.
