The best choice depends first on how many people will actually play: 7 Wonders Duel, Patchwork, and Codenames: Duet are options for two; Carcassonne and the original Ticket to Ride suit small families; and Herd Mentality is the clearest fit when ten or more people need to play together at one table. For seven or eight, 7 Wonders, Dixit, and specific editions of other party games fill different roles. Player counts, ages, and times below refer to the named boxes—not every game or expansion with a similar title.
At a glance
Player counts, minimum ages, and durations are publisher-listed specifications for the editions named. “Checked” refers to this guide’s research date, not a claim about current stock or price.

Which board game works best for exactly two players?
For a pair, pick based on the kind of interaction you want: civilization-building competition, a spatial puzzle, or cooperative word clues. The player count matters: standard 7 Wonders begins at three, and standard Codenames is a team game for four or more; neither should be confused with its two-player-friendly counterpart.
7 Wonders Duel: competitive civilization-building
7 Wonders Duel is designed for exactly two players, ages 10+, with a publisher-listed average duration of 30 minutes. Over three Ages, players develop civilizations and can win through military strength, scientific progress, or points. Those distinct victory routes make it a good match for a pair seeking choices that directly affect the opponent, rather than a shared puzzle. It is a separate box from 7 Wonders, which supports three to seven players. [c01][c08]

Patchwork: a spatial puzzle for two
Patchwork is also for exactly two players, ages 8+. Players buy differently shaped fabric pieces and fit them onto their own quilt boards, so the central challenge is how to use limited space rather than building a civilization or trading clues. Lookout Games lists approximately 30 minutes; Asmodee Nordics lists 30–45 minutes. If time matters, treat the duration as approximate and check the edition or publisher listing for the copy you are considering. [c02][c19]
Codenames: Duet: cooperate over words
Codenames: Duet is the cooperative option: players work together using partial information to find their agents. Czech Games Edition lists it for 2+ players, ages 11+, and 15 minutes. That “2+” applies to Duet; it does not change the standard Codenames box’s stated range of 4–8+ players. Choose Duet if solving together sounds more appealing than competing, and standard Codenames only when the group can form teams. [c03][c09]
Should a two-player game also work when guests join?
If the player count may grow, the original North America Ticket to Ride supports two to five players, while Azul supports two to four. These solve different needs: Ticket to Ride is about collecting train cards and connecting cities; Azul is about drafting tiles to fill individual wall patterns. Neither is the universal winner for two players—the better fit depends on whether your pair wants routes or tile drafting. [c04][c05]

For a small family, compare minimum age, the number who will play most often, and whether the group prefers building a shared landscape, connecting routes, or arranging patterns. The publisher age mark is a guide to the box, not a guarantee that a particular child will enjoy or understand it.
Carcassonne: landscape tiles and claimed features
Carcassonne supports two to five players, is listed for ages 7+, and takes 30–45 minutes. Players add landscape tiles, claim features with followers, and score completed features. Among these family picks, its listed minimum age is the lowest, making it a useful first option to consider for a group with a seven-year-old. Whether it suits that child still depends on their interests and comfort with the game. [c06]

Ticket to Ride: connecting cities by rail
The original North America Ticket to Ride supports two to five players, ages 8+, and a listed 30–60 minutes. Players collect train cards and connect cities, so it is a strong format fit for households that sometimes add another adult or two to a family game night. These details belong to the original North America game; do not assume every map, edition, or expansion bearing the Ticket to Ride name has the same player range or specifications. [c04]
Azul: tile drafting for a smaller table
Azul is listed for two to four players, ages 8+, and 30–45 minutes. Players draft tiles to fill individual wall patterns. Consider it when your family wants spatial decisions and a small-table format, rather than a route-building map. It is not a ten-player option: a table needing that many seats should look at a group game or split into separate tables. [c05]
Kingdomino: the shorter listed duration
Kingdomino supports two to four players, is listed for ages 8+, and has a 15-minute duration listing. Players build a connected landscape from domino-like tiles. That makes it the shorter family option on paper, but the listed game duration should not be treated as a promise that explaining the rules plus playing will take only 15 minutes. [c07]
Just One and Dixit: cooperative words or picture clues
Just One and Dixit both start at three players and can suit a family that values shared guessing over direct competition. Just One is a cooperative word-clue game for three to seven players, ages 8+, listed at 20 minutes. Because its stated minimum is three, it is not a native two-player pick. [c10]
Dixit supports three to eight players, ages 8+, and 30 minutes. A storyteller gives a clue to an illustrated card while the others try to identify it. The base game’s cards are illustrated and text-free, but the clue is spoken: “text-free” does not mean play without language or conversation. Consider it for a family drawn to image-based interpretation rather than word puzzles. [c12]

What works for seven, eight, or more players?
For a large group, start with the exact capacity printed for the box and then choose the style of interaction. Seven people can choose simultaneous strategy, cooperative word clues, or a party game; eight can choose picture clues or a specified drawing-and-guessing edition. For ten or more at one table, Herd Mentality has the broadest documented range among these picks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHerd Mentality: one table for ten to twenty
Herd Mentality is listed for four to 20 players, ages 10+, and 20 minutes. Everyone answers a prompt and tries to match the majority, which gives a crowd a shared activity without requiring a strategic team game. Its unusual upper limit is the reason to lead with it for a group of ten or more; it is a party game, not a substitute for a deep strategy game. [c11] Big Potato’s product page is a source for the named box’s listing, not evidence of independent performance testing.
7 Wonders: strategy for three to seven
7 Wonders supports three to seven players, ages 10+, and is listed at 30 minutes. Repos Production says players act simultaneously and describes the design as having “no downtime whether you’re playing with 3 or 7 players.” That is the publisher’s description of the simultaneous-play format, not an independent guarantee that every group will have no waiting. It is a strategic choice for seven, but it does not support two; use the separate Duel box for a pair. [c08]
Codenames: team word clues for four or more
Standard Codenames is listed by Czech Games Edition for 4–8+ players, ages 10+, at 15 minutes. The plus sign is part of the publisher’s range, so eight is not presented as a strict maximum. Still, a larger headcount does not guarantee equal speaking time or participation: groups should be comfortable sharing clue discussion across teams. For two, choose Duet instead. [c09]
Just One for seven; Dixit or Telestrations for eight
Just One reaches seven, not eight: it is a cooperative word-clue game for three to seven. Dixit supports up to eight and emphasizes illustrated clues. For a group that prefers drawing, Telestrations 8 Player (2nd Edition) is specifically listed for four to eight, ages 10+, and 30 minutes; its box supplies eight reusable sketchbooks for a draw-and-guess chain. Check that it is this named edition rather than assuming every Telestrations box has the same capacity. [c10][c12][c13]

Sushi Go Party!: a flexible two-to-eight card game
Sushi Go Party! is worth considering when the headcount varies from a pair to a larger group: its official rules state two to eight players and include a “Dinner for Two” menu and a “Big Banquet” menu for six to eight. It is a card-drafting game with a board, not a conventional map-based board game. Which? describes it as about 30 minutes, so use that as an approximate published description rather than a promise for every group. [c14][c24] The official rules PDF identifies the menus and player range.
How do you compare games without choosing a universal winner?
Compare supported player count first, then age and duration, then the kind of interaction your group wants. These specifications describe boxes; they cannot tell you which game your family will enjoy most.
| If the group wants… | Consider | Why it fits | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| A competitive game for exactly two | 7 Wonders Duel or Patchwork | Civilization competition or spatial puzzle, respectively | Both are two-player boxes; Patchwork duration varies by listing |
| A cooperative game for two | Codenames: Duet | Players work together with partial information and word clues | Do not confuse it with standard Codenames |
| A family option that can include two to five | Carcassonne or original Ticket to Ride | Tile placement and feature scoring, or rail routes and city connections | Carcassonne lists age 7+; Ticket to Ride lists 8+ |
| Seven players seeking strategy | 7 Wonders | Simultaneous actions and civilization-building | The box starts at three players |
| Seven players seeking cooperation | Just One | Group word clues instead of team-versus-team play | It does not natively seat eight |
| Eight players seeking picture clues or drawing | Dixit or Telestrations 8 Player (2nd Edition) | Illustrated-card clues, or a draw-and-guess chain | Confirm the exact edition and its printed count |
| Ten to twenty at one table | Herd Mentality | Its listed range is four to 20 | It is a party game, not a strategy-game substitute |
At a seven-person table, the practical choice is between 7 Wonders’ simultaneous strategy, Just One’s cooperative clues, and Herd Mentality’s majority-answer party play. At eight, Dixit and the specified Telestrations edition are options with different kinds of group participation. At ten or more, do not stretch a smaller box’s published capacity: choose a game that lists the full group, or set up separate tables. Separate tables are a hosting arrangement, not a change to any game’s supported player count. [c01][c02][c03][c08][c10][c11][c12][c13][c17]
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you host a game night for ten to twelve beginners?
If everyone wants to play the same activity together, Herd Mentality is the listed option here that supports a group of ten to twelve in one game. If the guests would rather have different experiences, arrange smaller tables and use boxes within their stated player counts; that gives people a choice without pretending a five-player family game seats twelve. [c11][c17]
For a beginner-heavy crowd, decide whether the group would rather match answers, cooperate over clues, or learn a strategic system before choosing the box. Herd Mentality is explicitly framed around matching the majority; Codenames is a team word-clue game, but its standard box begins at four and is marked 4–8+; 7 Wonders is a strategy option for three to seven. Those are different social formats, not interchangeable “large-group games.” If you divide guests across tables, assign people to the activity they are most interested in and keep each table within the selected box’s stated count. This is a practical hosting arrangement, not a claim that one format is objectively better. [c08][c09][c11]

What should you check before buying a particular edition?
Check the exact box’s player range, age mark, and duration instead of relying on a franchise name or an online search result that may refer to an expansion or another map. The original Ticket to Ride specifications above do not automatically transfer to every Ticket to Ride game; 7 Wonders and 7 Wonders Duel are separate games; and Telestrations’ eight-player specification here is for its named 8 Player (2nd Edition). Publisher-listed ages and times are useful for narrowing options, not guarantees about an individual child or group. [c01][c04][c08][c13]
Expansions are not substitutes for checking the base game. Ticket to Ride: USA 1910 explicitly requires the original Ticket to Ride; Dixit expansions require a Dixit base game; and 7 Wonders Duel: Pantheon is an expansion for Duel, not for standard 7 Wonders. Check compatibility with the edition you already own before buying an add-on, and do not assume a listing includes the base game. [c15][c16][c20][c21][c22][c23]

How we picked
The selections are organized around publisher-supported player counts and the needs in the title: exactly two players, small families, and larger groups. Within those groups, they span different formats—competition and cooperation, words and pictures, spatial placement, routes, and party play—so readers can match the game to the people at the table rather than treat one box as the winner for every occasion. Product specifications come from the named publisher or edition listings; they are not results of independent play-testing. The public Which? page lists tested games alphabetically but reserves its best-from-tests selections for signed-in readers, so it does not establish an independent overall winner here. [c18]
Frequently Asked Questions
Can two people play Codenames?
Yes, if you mean Codenames: Duet, the cooperative version listed for two or more. Standard Codenames is a different box, listed for 4–8+ players; the two-player count should not be transferred between the titles.
Can a seven-year-old play any of these games?
Carcassonne’s listed minimum is 7+, the lowest among the highlighted family options here. A publisher age mark is a starting point, not a promise that every seven-year-old will enjoy the rules, reading, or conversation involved.
What is a good game for 12 people at one table?
Herd Mentality is listed for four to 20 players, so its stated range includes twelve. The other games in this guide have lower listed capacities and should be used at separate tables rather than counted as twelve-player games.
Should I buy one game or set up several smaller tables for a big game night?
Choose one box if the group wants one shared activity and its listed range covers everyone. Separate tables make sense when guests want different styles of play or when the box you prefer seats fewer people; they also let each table stay within the game’s supported player count.
