To check whether a free PlayStation game is available to you, sign in with the account that claimed or acquired it and look in that account’s game library. On PS5, open Games home > Game Library > Your Collection; on PS4, open Library > Purchased. You can also check Game Library > Purchased on the PlayStation website or in PlayStation App. If the game is missing or locked, check the account’s transaction history and the type of offer before restoring licenses or buying it.
What does “available on my account” mean?
A game’s presence on a console does not necessarily mean your account owns it. Access depends on how the game was obtained: it might be a normal purchase or free store claim, a PlayStation Plus monthly game claimed during its offer window, a title available only while you have the appropriate Plus membership, or a game shared by another user on the console. Those entitlements have different rules.
Start by checking the account that actually claimed or acquired the game. Sony’s PS5 library can show games that were purchased or played, including some available through a Plus subscription, so a tile by itself is not proof of permanent ownership. The account’s transaction history is better evidence when the library is unclear. [Sony: PS5 Game Library] [Sony: check PlayStation Store transactions]

What kind of access did the offer provide? Does that access still meet its conditions today? Is the version you want compatible with this console? For example, a game could have been claimed by one account, played on a shared console by another user, and now be locked because the first account’s subscription is inactive.

The basic check is free and does not require an accessory. Use the console, website, or app route below to inspect the signed-in account. If all you need is to confirm the library entry, you do not need to pair a console or initiate a download. For an individual game, only the account’s own library, transaction records, current subscription, and the offer’s terms can establish what access applies; a public support page cannot verify a private account’s claim history.
How do I check on PS5?
Use the PS5 account that may have claimed the game. The library is the quickest place to look; transaction history can help confirm whether the account acquired it.
- From Games home, open Game Library.
- Select Your Collection.
- Find the game and open its page. Check whether the available option is to download or play, or whether the game appears locked or asks you to obtain access.
- If you are checking a current monthly PlayStation Plus game, go to PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Monthly Games, select the game, and choose Download. For a monthly game, make sure you added it to your library while it was offered.
- To verify a past claim, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Transaction History. Select the relevant account and date range, then look for the game or its transaction.
If the game appears in the library but the account history does not confirm a purchase or claim, check whether the tile represents a subscription or catalog game, or access shared by another console user. [Sony: find and download games] [Sony: monthly games]
When checking a monthly offer, distinguish seeing the game advertised from actually adding it to the library. The offer is available for a limited period; if it is still current, open the Monthly Games section and use the claim option shown there. If it was offered in the past, a later search result or a tile that shows play history does not by itself prove the account claimed it during the offer window. Look for the relevant transaction or library evidence on the account that was signed in at the time.
Do not confuse the monthly-games route with the Game Catalog or Classics Catalog. Those are subscription catalogues with tier and availability conditions, not a list of monthly games to claim as permanent purchases. If the title came from a catalog, verify both the account’s subscription tier and whether the title is still listed for that tier before treating a lock as a license error.
How do I check on PS4?
On PS4, use the account that acquired the title and check its Purchased library. If the game was a current monthly Plus offer, check the monthly-games page as well.
- Open Library > Purchased.
- Select the game to view its available options.
- For a current monthly Plus game, open PlayStation Plus > Monthly Games, select the title, and choose Add to Library, then download it.
- To review a past claim, go to Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Wallet > Transaction History. Check the dates when you think the offer or claim occurred.
Sony’s general route for finding downloadable account content is the Purchased library. A missing title there is a reason to inspect the transaction record and entitlement type, not proof by itself that the game was never claimed. [Sony: find and download games] [Sony: check transactions]

For older claims, choose a date range that covers the likely offer period rather than checking only recent activity. If you are unsure when you claimed a monthly game, widen the search to the month or year when it appeared. A title may also have a different store listing or edition name than the one you remember, so compare the transaction details with the exact game and platform shown in the library.
Can I check from a phone or computer?
Yes. You do not need to be at the console just to view the account’s Purchased library. Sign in to the PlayStation website, select your avatar, then open Game Library > Purchased. In PlayStation App, open Game Library > Purchased.
For transaction details in the app, open the PS Store icon, tap the menu at the top right, and select Transaction History. Pairing a console is needed for app-initiated remote downloading, not for viewing the Purchased list. Use the same account you suspect claimed the game; checking another signed-in account will not establish the first account’s entitlement. [Sony: find and download games] [Sony: check transactions]
The website’s transaction-history page defaults to the past two years. For a game claimed earlier than that, adjust the date range to cover the older transaction before deciding that no record exists. The app and website are convenient alternatives for checking account content, but they are not stronger evidence than the account record itself. A Purchased listing is useful; a matching transaction is especially helpful when you need to distinguish a claim from a game that was merely played or temporarily available.
If the website or app shows the wrong account, sign out and sign back in with the PlayStation account used when the offer was claimed. A console can have several user profiles, each with separate account activity. Looking at the right console but the wrong profile can lead to the same mistaken conclusion as checking the wrong account online.
What kind of “free game” was it?
The word “free” can refer to several different access arrangements. Identify the offer before deciding whether the game should still be playable.
- A free-to-play or free store title: Check whether it appears in the account’s library or transaction history, and whether you are using the account that obtained it. Do not assume every game described as free was a PlayStation Plus benefit.
- A monthly PlayStation Plus game: It must be added to the library during the offer period. Sony describes monthly games as available to download and play at no extra cost during your PlayStation Plus membership. In other words, claiming one does not make it an unconditional permanent entitlement when membership is inactive. [Sony: monthly games]
- A PlayStation Plus Game Catalog or Classics Catalog title: Access depends on the relevant membership tier and whether the title remains available in that catalog. Catalog access is not the same as buying or claiming the game permanently; availability can change over time and varies by tier. [Sony: PlayStation Plus]
- A game another console user acquired: You may have been able to play it through that user’s console-sharing access. That does not establish that your own account claimed the title. Check the acquiring account if you can, and confirm whether shared access is still available.
These distinctions explain why a game can appear in a library, download successfully, or have been playable before without being a permanent entitlement on the account you are checking.

For a practical comparison, think of the offer in terms of claim evidence, entitlement type, current access, and version. A transaction or Purchased entry on the acquiring account is evidence of a claim. A claimed monthly Plus game still has a membership condition. A catalog title has both a tier condition and a changing availability window. Shared access comes from another account and can depend on console-sharing settings. A PS4 entitlement may or may not include a separate PS5 edition. Keeping these checks separate makes it easier to identify what needs fixing.
“Free-to-play” is also not interchangeable with a limited-time store giveaway or a Plus benefit. The fact that a game did not require a payment at download does not tell you whether it was claimed, borrowed through a subscription, or accessed from another user’s account. Check the listing and account record rather than relying on how the offer was described in a post or search result.
Why is the game missing or locked?
A missing or padlocked game can have several causes: the wrong account, an expired or insufficient subscription, a catalog title that is no longer available, a shared entitlement from another user, or a license issue. Check in that order so you do not treat a technical lock as evidence that you never claimed the game.
- Confirm the account. Check the account currently signed in on the console and compare it with the account that may have claimed the game. Sony recommends checking the acquiring account and its transaction history for locked titles. [Sony: game launch issues]
- Look for claim evidence. Check the Purchased library and transaction history for the relevant dates. On the PlayStation website, transaction history defaults to the past two years; widen the date range when looking for an older claim. [Sony: check transactions]
- Check the entitlement rules. If it was a monthly Plus game, confirm that the account has an active membership. If it came from a catalog, confirm that the membership tier and current catalog availability still permit access. Restoring licenses does not replace an expired subscription or bring back a catalog title that is no longer available.
- Check who provided access. If another user acquired the game, your access may have depended on console sharing. Check the other user’s account and sharing setup rather than assuming the game belongs to your account.
- Restore licenses only after confirming the entitlement. On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. On PS4, go to Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses. Sony says restoring licenses does not affect your data. [Sony: game launch issues] [Sony: restore licenses]
If the entitlement checks out and the game is still locked after restoring licenses, follow Sony’s game-launch troubleshooting guidance. Restoring licenses is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that access can be recovered in every case.
Before restoring, use the evidence you have collected to identify which issue is plausible. If the account never claimed the game, license restoration cannot create a claim. If the game is a monthly Plus title and membership has ended, restoring licenses cannot satisfy the membership requirement. If it left a catalog, restoring licenses cannot restore its catalog listing. The step is most relevant after confirming that the signed-in account has a valid entitlement but the console is not recognizing it correctly.

A shared-console situation needs its own check. If the title was acquired by a different user, confirm that the other user’s account is still on the console and that the sharing access that allowed you to play is still in place. Do not treat the game’s past availability to your profile as proof that your profile owns it. If you cannot access the acquiring account or verify its transaction record, the public library view on your account may not settle who owns the entitlement.
Does a free PS4 game include the PS5 version?
Not automatically. A PS4 game and its PS5 edition can be separate versions with different entitlement rules. Sony says some PS4-to-PS5 upgrades may be paid or time-limited, and PS4 games redeemed as PlayStation Plus benefits generally do not qualify for an upgrade unless the offer says otherwise. Check the specific game’s store page and offer terms before assuming the PS5 version is included. [Sony: upgrade a PS4 game to its PS5 version]

Also check whether the title is marked PS4-only. Most PS4 games are playable on PS5, but compatibility is not universal, and PS4 compatibility does not itself grant ownership of a separate PS5 edition. [Sony: PS5 backward compatibility]
When you open the store listing, check the platform and edition labels carefully. A PS4 version that runs on PS5 through backward compatibility is still the PS4 version; that is different from downloading a native PS5 edition. If the PS5 edition displays a price or upgrade condition, do not assume the PS4 library entry overrides that offer. The specific game’s upgrade terms determine whether an upgrade is free, paid, limited-time, or unavailable for the way the PS4 version was acquired.

What should you conclude from each check?
- It appears in Purchased and the account history supports the claim: The account has evidence of acquiring it. If it is still locked, investigate its license or any subscription condition.
- It appears in the library, but you cannot find a purchase or claim: Treat the tile as inconclusive. It may reflect play history, subscription access, or another user’s sharing.
- It appears in the Plus catalog but not as a confirmed claim: Check the tier and current catalog listing. Catalog availability is conditional, not a permanent claim.
- It is absent from the library and transaction history: Recheck the account and widen the history date range. If there is still no evidence, the available public account-checking steps cannot confirm that this account claimed it.
- The PS4 version is available but the PS5 version is not: Check the edition and upgrade offer. Access to one version does not necessarily include the other.
The most reliable check is the combination of the correct account, the library, the transaction record, and the game’s actual entitlement type—not the game tile alone.
If you confirm that you own or can access the game but cannot install it because storage is full, that is a separate issue from entitlement. An optional compatible USB extended-storage drive can provide space: Sony specifies SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later and capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB for these uses, and notes that operation with an individual drive is not guaranteed. On PS5, PS4 games can run from compatible USB storage, while PS5 games must be copied back to console storage before play. This is an optional storage solution, not something needed to check whether a title is on your account. [Sony: PS5 extended storage]
These account-checking routes and menu labels reflect Sony’s US support pages checked on October 30, 2026. PlayStation menus, membership tiers, and monthly or catalog selections can change; check Sony’s current support and offer pages if a menu differs or a title’s availability has changed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will restoring PlayStation licenses delete my saved games?
No. Sony states that restoring licenses will not affect your data. It addresses license recognition; it does not change whether a subscription or catalog entitlement is still valid.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I keep playing a monthly PlayStation Plus game after my membership ends?
A claimed monthly game is tied to an active PlayStation Plus membership. If membership is inactive, the claim alone does not provide access; access can return if the account again meets the membership requirement.

If I claimed the PS4 version, can I download the PS5 edition for free?
Not necessarily. Sony says upgrades may be paid or time-limited, and PS4 games redeemed as Plus benefits generally do not qualify unless the offer specifically says otherwise. Check the individual title’s edition and offer terms.
Does a game appearing in Your Collection prove that I own it?
No. Sony says the PS5 library can include games you purchased or played, including titles available through Plus. Check the acquiring account’s transaction history and whether the title came from a monthly benefit, catalog, or shared access.
Can I check my PlayStation library in the app without pairing my console?
Yes. Sign in to PlayStation App and open Game Library > Purchased. Pairing a console is needed for app-initiated remote downloading, not for viewing the Purchased library.

How far back does PlayStation transaction history go?
The PlayStation website defaults to the past two years. Select a wider date range when checking an older claim; on the console, choose the relevant dates in Transaction History.
Does restoring licenses bring back a game that left the Plus catalog?
No. License restoration does not restore catalog availability or replace the required membership tier. Check whether the game is still offered in the appropriate catalog.
Do I need to pay or buy an accessory just to check whether I claimed a game?
No. Checking the library and transaction history on a console, website, or app does not require a purchase or accessory. Storage hardware is only an optional consideration if you have already confirmed access and need more installation space.
The Bottom Line
Check the account that claimed the game, then compare its Purchased library with transaction history. A monthly Plus claim, catalog listing, shared game, free-to-play title, and PS4 edition each have different access rules. If the game is locked, verify those rules first; restore licenses only after confirming a valid entitlement.
