To manage Edge centrally from the cloud, open the Microsoft 365 admin center and go to Settings > Microsoft Edge. For Windows domain or local policies, use Group Policy; for devices managed through Microsoft Intune or another MDM system, deliver Edge settings there. To see what a browser actually received, open edge://policy in Edge.
These routes can overlap. A device-level Group Policy or MDM setting can override a conflicting setting from the Edge management service, so check the policy source and scope before changing a cloud assignment.
Choose the right Edge management route
| Management route | Use it for | Where to configure and verify |
|---|---|---|
| Edge management service | Cloud configuration policies assigned to Microsoft Entra groups | Microsoft 365 admin center > Settings > Microsoft Edge. Users must sign in to Edge to retrieve assigned settings. Verify in edge://policy. Microsoft Learn: Get started with configuration policies |
| Group Policy | Windows domain or local Edge policy administration | Install Microsoft Edge administrative templates and configure policy in Group Policy Editor. Verify in edge://policy. Microsoft Learn: Configure Microsoft Edge for Windows with policy settings |
| Intune or other MDM | Organizations that deliver browser settings through device management | Configure and assign an Edge configuration profile through the organization’s MDM. Check both edge://policy and the device’s policy configuration. Microsoft Learn: Configure Microsoft Edge using Mobile Device Management |
Choose based on how the intended users or devices are managed, not just where a setting appears easiest to edit. A policy assigned to a user group and a device policy may reach the same browser but have different scope and precedence.
Set up a cloud configuration policy
- Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center and select Settings > Microsoft Edge.
- Create a configuration policy or open one you want to change.
- Work through the wizard’s policy basics, settings, extensions, assignments, and review/create stages. Select the settings and platforms the policy should cover.
- Assign the policy to the appropriate Microsoft Entra group, then review the assignment and create or save the policy.
- Have an assigned user sign in to Edge, then check
edge://policyon a target browser to confirm the setting arrived.
Microsoft’s setup documentation lists Edge version 115.0.1901.7 or later and the Microsoft Edge Administrator role as prerequisites. It lists Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android as supported operating systems, and says the service is unavailable to GCC plan customers. Tenant eligibility and role assignment can therefore affect whether this navigation and setup are available. Microsoft’s configuration-policy setup documentation

Configure Windows policy with Group Policy
- Install Microsoft Edge administrative templates on the Windows systems where you administer policy.
- Open Group Policy Editor and configure mandatory settings under Microsoft Edge, or recommended settings under Microsoft Edge – Default Settings (users can override).
- Open Edge on a target device and navigate to
edge://policyto inspect the policies applied to that browser.
Mandatory settings take precedence over a user’s preferences. Recommended settings provide defaults that users can change. If an expected setting is missing, check that the correct template, policy scope, and target device or user are in use. Microsoft Learn: Configure Microsoft Edge for Windows with policy settings
Understand policy priority and conflicts
Cloud configuration policies can combine when their assignments do not conflict. When two cloud policies conflict, the Edge management service uses their configured priority; priority 0 is highest. Intune configuration policies do not use this same priority mechanism.

- With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution
- The 13.5" 2256 x 1504 screen provides a great movie watching experience
- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
Cloud priority is not the whole precedence picture: Microsoft warns that a conflicting Group Policy or MDM setting on a device can override a setting supplied by the Edge management service. When the browser has an unexpected value, identify its policy source and scope in edge://policy before repeatedly editing or reassigning the cloud policy. Microsoft Learn: Get started with configuration policies
Verify a policy or troubleshoot a missing setting
- In the target Edge browser, open
edge://policy. Look for the policy name and its reported value and source. - If the policy is absent, confirm that the target user or device is included in the intended assignment and that the relevant service, Group Policy, or MDM configuration reached it.
- For MDM, inspect the profile on the device and check that the policy path and value are correct. On Windows, Edge policy settings are documented under
SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge. - If the policy appears but its result is unexpected, compare its source and scope with other policies targeting the same browser. A conflicting device GPO or MDM policy may take precedence over a cloud service setting.
Microsoft recommends checking edge://policy and the device’s policy configuration when an MDM setting is absent. Microsoft Learn: Configure Microsoft Edge using Mobile Device Management

Keep the management service distinct from its enablement policy
The service’s setup documentation lists Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. The separate EdgeManagementEnabled policy has a narrower support statement: Windows with Edge 115 or later, not macOS, Android, or iOS. On Windows, it is a mandatory Boolean policy controlling whether Edge attempts to connect to the management service, and a browser restart is required for refresh. Do not assume that this Windows policy is the switch for every platform supported by the service. Service setup details · Microsoft Learn: EdgeManagementEnabled policy
Configure extension controls at the right level
The Edge management service supports profile-wide extension defaults as well as controls for selected extensions. When an individual extension has its own setting, that specific setting overrides the profile-wide default. Use a per-extension control when one extension needs different treatment from the general default. Microsoft Learn: Extensions management
