On PS5, Graphics Mode targets 30 fps and favors image quality, while Frame-Rate Mode targets 60 fps but can fluctuate. Steam Deck reports show demanding scenes dipping below 30 fps, even in a 2026 test that reported the game as Steam Deck Verified. These are directional findings, not results from a controlled, same-scene comparison.
How does Final Fantasy XVI perform on Steam Deck compared with PS5?
The available reports point to a clearer performance choice on standard PS5. Its two graphics modes set different targets: a 30 fps target for the higher-fidelity Graphics Mode, or a 60 fps target for Frame-Rate Mode, which can be less consistent. Steam Deck reviewers report that performance can fall below 30 fps in demanding moments.
That comparison is not a direct benchmark. The Deck figures come from separate PC-build tests at different dates and conditions; the PS5 figures describe mode targets and a technical summary. No source here measures the same scene, build, settings, and method on both systems, so there is no supported percentage difference or definitive like-for-like image-quality score.
| What you’re comparing | Steam Deck reports | Standard PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Frame rate | Steam Deck HQ’s August 2024 demo test reported around 30 fps only some of the time at 720p on Low settings with FSR 3 Ultra Performance. Its September 2026 test reported drops below 30 fps in traversal and cutscenes. | Graphics Mode targets 30 fps; Frame-Rate Mode targets 60 fps. PSFoundry’s 2026 summary reports that Frame-Rate Mode can drop below 60 fps during traversal. |
| Image quality | The 2024 tester described cutscenes as pixelated and blurry. The 2026 reviewer also criticized cutscene detail. | Graphics Mode is the higher-resolution option compared with Frame-Rate Mode. PlayStation advertises 4K support with a compatible display, but that does not mean every scene renders natively at 4K. |
| Main practical advantage | Play while handheld. | Choose between a higher-fidelity 30 fps target and a 60 fps target; PS5 also supports DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers. |
What do the Steam Deck performance tests show?
August 2024: pre-release PC demo
Steam Deck HQ reviewer Oliver Stogden tested a pre-release demo at 1280×720, Low settings, and FSR 3 Ultra Performance. He reported performance around 30 fps only some of the time. In some particle- or depth-of-field-heavy cutscenes it fell to around 20 fps or the teens, and in combat it dipped into the mid-20s. He also described cutscenes as pixelated and blurry. This is launch-period demo evidence, not a current guarantee for every Deck, game build, or settings configuration. Read Steam Deck HQ’s 2024 demo test.

September 2026: reported Verified status, with performance caveats
In a September 2026 review, Noah Kupetsky reported that Final Fantasy XVI had recently received the Steam Deck Verified badge. In his test, battles generally stayed near 30 fps, but traversal fell below 30 and as low as 18 fps; some cutscenes fell as low as 13 fps. He also criticized the cutscene image quality. These are one reviewer’s observations, not a claim that all Deck hardware and software configurations behave identically. Read Steam Deck HQ’s 2026 review and test.
Verified status and performance are separate considerations: the badge is a reported compatibility status, while the reviewer’s figures describe how the game performed in that test. Neither should be read as a promise of stable frame rates in every scene.

Which PS5 graphics mode should you use?
Graphics Mode: choose image quality and a 30 fps target
Use Graphics Mode if you prefer the higher-resolution presentation and are comfortable with a 30 fps target. PSFoundry’s technical summary, updated 5 September 2026 and citing earlier Digital Foundry analysis, lists this mode’s target as 30 fps.
Frame-Rate Mode: choose a 60 fps target, not a locked 60
Frame-Rate Mode targets 60 fps, but PSFoundry reports that it can fall below that during world traversal. Its summary also reports that internal resolution can drop to 720p in combat. That mode is therefore a trade-off, not a guarantee of consistently smooth 60 fps or unchanged image detail. PSFoundry marks some build details and measurements as unverified, so treat its technical figures as an attributed summary rather than a controlled measurement presented here. See PSFoundry’s PS5 graphics-mode summary.

Does the Steam Deck look as good as PS5?
The available evidence does not establish a direct visual match. The Deck test reports describe low settings, upscaling, and visible softness or reduced detail in cutscenes. On PS5, Graphics Mode is the higher-resolution choice, and PlayStation lists 4K support when connected to a compatible TV or monitor. That is an output capability, not proof that the game renders every frame natively at 4K.
Screen size and viewing distance also differ between a handheld and a TV, but the cited sources do not quantify how much that changes perceived image quality. The grounded takeaway is narrower: the reviewed Deck tests report meaningful image compromises, while PS5 offers a higher-fidelity mode; there is no measured head-to-head quality comparison.

Do updates change the Steam Deck comparison?
Square Enix’s official PC update log records performance-related changes after release. Version 1.01, dated 26 September 2024, aimed to improve stability and included a fix for frame-rate drops under certain conditions. Version 1.02, dated 17 October 2024, adjusted shadow quality options and graphical fidelity settings to improve overall PC performance, and addressed graphics-display and crash issues on selected hardware setups. The update notes do not quantify a Steam Deck frame-rate gain, so they do not establish that the patches resolved the performance issues described in Deck tests. Read Square Enix’s PC update notes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which version fits your priorities?
- Choose standard PS5 if you want a choice between a higher-fidelity 30 fps target and a 60 fps target, accepting that Frame-Rate Mode can fluctuate.
- Choose Steam Deck if handheld play matters more than maintaining performance near 30 fps in every demanding scene, and you are willing to accept the reported dips and visual compromises.
- Check the exact edition before buying. Square Enix lists Final Fantasy XVI for PS5 and Steam, among other platforms. These performance observations concern the PC version on Deck and the standard PS5 version; they should not be generalized to other hardware editions. See Square Enix’s platform availability information.
PS5 also has platform features beyond frame rate: PlayStation highlights DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and shorter loading via the console’s SSD. Those features are not performance measurements against Steam Deck. See PlayStation’s official PS5 product page.
