It is scheduled to launch on April 8, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Square Enix has also announced physical and digital releases. The story and gameplay details available so far are announcements, not a completed-game review.
What is Final Fantasy VII Revelation?
The official title is FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION, rather than simply Final Fantasy Revelation. It is the third and final entry in Square Enix’s three-game Final Fantasy VII Remake project, which reimagines the 1997 role-playing game. The project’s first two games are FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE and FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH. Square Enix’s June 2026 announcement reported that the original Final Fantasy VII had sold 15.7 million units worldwide; that is the publisher’s historical figure in that announcement, not a newly verified lifetime total. Square Enix’s trilogy announcement also cites more than 140 perfect review scores across the remake series, not for Revelation itself.
When does Revelation come out, and where can you play it?
The confirmed release date is April 8, 2027. An earlier announcement described the launch window as Spring 2027; the later September 2026 date is more specific. PlayStation’s September 3, 2026 State of Play report confirms the PS5 date, while Square Enix lists the broader platform lineup in its release announcement.
| Platform | Availability announced |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | April 8, 2027 |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | April 8, 2027 |
| Xbox Series X|S | April 8, 2027 |
| PC | Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store; April 8, 2027 |
The announced platform list does not establish performance differences, technical requirements, file sizes, or feature parity between versions. There is not enough verified information to recommend one platform on technical grounds.

What is the story about?
Square Enix’s announced premise places Cloud Strife and his companions in a world close to annihilation. Sephiroth is nearing godhood, and Cloud’s group is aboard the Highwind trying to stop Meteor. The publisher describes Revelation as taking the story to its largest scale yet, with exploration aboard the airship and battles against the planet’s Weapons. These are publisher descriptions of the planned game; its full plot has not been disclosed.
One important context point for readers wondering about places absent from Rebirth: director Naoki Hamaguchi told GamesRadar that Rocket Town and Wutai were left out of that game because including them alongside its other story and gameplay elements would have made it too dense and disrupted its pacing and focus. GamesRadar’s interview provides that explanation; it does not by itself confirm how those locations will be used in Revelation.
What gameplay has Square Enix announced?
Exploration and combat
The publisher has described free exploration aboard the Highwind and battles that combine action with command selection. The August 2026 trailer announcement features Emerald Weapon emerging from the sea and introduces Typhon as a summon and Piko as a Chocobo partner. These are examples of revealed content, not a complete feature list. Square Enix’s trailer announcement outlines those reveals.

Weapons and their encounters
Not every Weapon encounter will work the same way. In an October 2026 PC Gamer interview, director Naoki Hamaguchi said some Weapons will be part of the main story and others optional side content. He described unique mechanics and interactive elements, with some encounters involving minigames and strategic play. PC Gamer’s interview is the basis for those details.

Square Enix recommends that newcomers play FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE and FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH to catch up. That is useful guidance for following the project’s characters and story, but the announcement does not say that the earlier games are a mandatory prerequisite to start Revelation. The publisher’s Steam announcement also describes Streamlined Progression options in the earlier games, including always-full HP and MP, a full ATB gauge, and easier weapon-ability acquisition.
There are also specified summon materia bonuses for players with earlier-game save data:
