The FiiO RR13 is worth considering if you want a small, tactile FM radio that can also play through its own speakers and work as a USB headphone amplifier. Its appeal is the combination: manual tuning, a detachable antenna, a swappable battery and retro styling in a device weighing about 76g. It is not a replacement for a modern smart radio, though. It has no documented DAB, Bluetooth or built-in streaming, and its speaker is for personal listening rather than filling a room.
Independent reviews put its price around the mid-$60s to about $70, but report different figures, so check a current listing before buying. Here’s what the RR13 does well, where its compromises matter and who is most likely to enjoy it.
What is the FiiO RR13?
The RR13 is a portable FM stereo radio built around an analog tuning dial. It receives two frequency ranges: standard FM at 87–108MHz and Japan FM at 76–90MHz. A Silicon Labs Si4831 radio chip works with an internal custom-shaped antenna; for additional flexibility, the radio also has a detachable 3.5mm telescopic antenna.

You can listen through its built-in stereo speakers, connect wired headphones to the 3.5mm output, or switch to AMP mode and use it as a USB audio DAC and headphone amplifier. That combination makes it more versatile than a radio that only receives broadcasts, but FM remains its central function. The RR13 is not documented as having DAB, Bluetooth or an onboard internet-radio app.

Its small aluminum-and-glass body, luminous mechanical dial and single-handed controls are part of the proposition. This is a device for someone who wants to pick up a radio and tune it, not just another way to access a streaming service.
How good is the FiiO RR13’s reception?
Reception is one of the RR13’s strongest arguments, particularly when you attach the telescopic antenna. FiiO combines that removable antenna with the radio chip and an internal antenna, giving you more than one way to receive a signal.
In its 2026 review, Headfonics reported clear reception while riding with the external antenna attached. The reviewer said interference was most apparent around dense concrete structures. Headfonia also praised the radio’s reception, though neither report establishes that every station or location will get the same result.
For practical use, try the supplied antenna connection before deciding reception is poor. Move the radio away from dense walls or other obstructions, and reposition the antenna as you tune. Buildings, terrain, local station coverage and the quality of the incoming signal all affect what a portable FM radio can receive. The RR13’s antenna options can help, but they cannot create a broadcast signal where coverage is weak.
There is a small trade-off in how you listen: the detachable antenna uses the 3.5mm port in speaker mode. That means you cannot use the antenna and wired headphones at the same time. If you need headphones, you will have to rely on the radio’s internal antenna rather than connecting the telescopic one through that port.
How does the RR13 sound through its speakers and headphones?
The built-in stereo speakers make the RR13 convenient for casual listening without headphones, but they are limited by the device’s small chassis. Headfonics found the speaker enjoyable and fairly loud for its size; Headfonia was more cautious, describing its output as constrained by the compact body. Those assessments point to the same practical use: personal, bedside or desk listening, not a powerful room speaker.

For a small radio, a speaker is a genuinely useful extra. It lets you listen while doing something else without wearing headphones, and avoids making the RR13 dependent on another audio device. But if you expect strong bass, substantial volume across a large room or sound that can compete with background noise, the compact enclosure is a limitation rather than a surprise to overlook.
The 3.5mm headphone output is the better choice for private listening. FiiO specifies support for 8–100Ω headphone loads. In AMP mode, the company rates the headphone output at at least 80mW + 80mW into 32Ω, with output impedance below 1Ω. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements; they describe the stated output capability, not a guarantee that every headphone will sound the same or reach a particular loudness.
Headfonics reported that the RR13’s USB-DAC mode worked with a USB-C connection and also praised its headphone-amplifier function. That makes AMP mode useful when you want the RR13 to do something after you have finished listening to FM. Still, this is a compact auxiliary function, not evidence that it should replace a dedicated desktop audio setup for every listener.
Can the FiiO RR13 work as a USB DAC?
Yes. In AMP mode, the RR13 accepts USB audio over a Type-C-to-Type-C connection and can act as a small DAC and headphone amplifier for a phone or computer. The detail to check before buying is the cable: FiiO says a TRUST-series DAC cable may need to be purchased separately, and Headfonics said its reviewer had to use another cable because one was not supplied.
Do not assume that any ordinary USB-C charging cable will do the job. The cable needs to support the DAC functionality required for the RR13’s USB audio mode. FiiO’s instructions identify a Type-C-to-Type-C cable with built-in DAC functionality as the relevant type. Check the product’s package contents and cable requirements before ordering; no available information confirms that a suitable cable is included with every sale.

With a compatible connection, the RR13 can take USB audio from a phone or computer and send it to wired headphones. That includes audio from a source such as internet radio playing on the connected device, but the service or stream runs on that device—not inside the RR13. AMP mode therefore adds flexibility without turning the radio into a wireless or app-based streamer.

How long does the RR13 battery last?
FiiO specifies a rechargeable 450mAh 10440 lithium battery with an integrated protection board. Its stated minimum runtimes vary by mode: at least 7 hours for FM through headphones, at least 4 hours for FM through the built-in speaker, and at least 18 hours for AMP mode through headphones.
These are FiiO’s figures under its listed test conditions, not a promise that every user will get exactly the same runtime. Speaker volume, listening habits and battery condition can affect real-world use. The most important takeaway is the difference between modes: the company’s rating is shortest for speaker listening and longest for USB amplifier use through headphones.
The battery is swappable, which is a welcome design choice for a device meant to be portable. A spare could extend a trip or let an owner replace a worn battery rather than treating the cell as permanently sealed into the radio. But the format is a 10440 rechargeable lithium battery, not a pair of ordinary AAA cells. If you look for a replacement, confirm its specifications and compatibility; no available information verifies any particular third-party battery listing.

The RR13 measures 43.4 × 85.6 × 16.4mm and weighs about 76g, according to FiiO’s 2026 specifications. Those dimensions make it pocket-sized, though the protruding antenna and the need to position it for reception may influence where it is most comfortable to use. Its aluminum-and-glass construction and retro dial give it a more deliberate, tactile character than a basic pocket receiver.
Headfonics praised its lightweight aluminum construction, single-handed operation and tactile volume knob. The mechanical tuning dial is central to the experience: instead of tapping a screen or scrolling through an app, you move through the FM band yourself. FiiO also includes a signal-strength indicator, which gives you a visual cue as you search for a station.
That style of operation is a pleasure for some listeners and an inconvenience for others. Manual tuning invites casual browsing and discovery, but is less direct than a saved-station list when you want to return quickly to a particular frequency. Published descriptions note analog tuning and a signal indicator, but do not establish that the RR13 has digital station presets. Buy it for the tuning experience, not on the assumption that it behaves like a modern smart radio.

Headfonics also noted 30- and 60-minute sleep-timer options. These are useful for bedside listening: you can set the radio to stop after a set period rather than leaving it playing indefinitely. The RR13 also has bass and 3D modes, according to the product information, adding a little more control to a device whose main appeal is otherwise simplicity.

What are the RR13’s main strengths and weaknesses?
| Strength | Why it matters | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Two FM frequency ranges | It covers standard FM and Japan FM, with analog tuning. | It remains an FM radio; DAB is not supported in the documented features. |
| Multiple antenna options | The internal antenna and detachable telescopic antenna provide flexibility for reception. | The external antenna occupies the 3.5mm port in speaker mode, so it cannot be used at the same time as wired headphones. |
| Built-in speakers | You can listen without carrying headphones. | The small enclosure limits output; it is not a room-filling speaker. |
| USB DAC and headphone-amp mode | The RR13 can handle USB audio from a connected phone or computer when paired with a compatible cable. | A suitable Type-C-to-Type-C DAC cable may not be included. |
| Swappable battery | The rechargeable cell can be removed and replaced. | It is a 10440 lithium format, not a universally available everyday battery like AAA. |
| Compact retro design | At about 76g, it is easy to carry and has a tactile dial and volume control. | The appeal depends on valuing a focused physical device over a phone or app. |
Is the FiiO RR13 worth buying?
The RR13 is most compelling for someone who genuinely wants a portable FM radio with a hands-on tuning experience. Its reception options, small built-in speakers, headphone output and USB amplifier mode give it more uses than a simple receiver. The swappable battery, lightweight build and sleep timer reinforce its suitability for a desk, kitchen, bedside table, travel bag or casual outdoor listening.
It is a less convincing purchase if the goal is simply to get the most radio features for the money. A phone can stream internet radio, while some dedicated radios offer DAB or other reception options the RR13 does not. The RR13’s distinctive value is the combination of an FM receiver and a tactile object, not a claim that it replaces every other audio device.
Independent reviews reported prices of $64.99 at Headfonics and $69.99 at Headfonia in 2026. Those figures conflict, and neither should be treated as a live quote. Expect the reported positioning to be around the mid-$60s to approximately $70, then verify the current price, stock and color availability before purchase.
Buy it if: you enjoy tuning across FM stations, want a small radio with both speaker and wired-headphone listening, value a replaceable battery, or expect to use USB audio through the device as well.

How should you decide whether it fits your setup?
Start with the broadcast services you actually use. If you need DAB or want the radio itself to connect to streaming services, the RR13’s documented feature set does not meet that requirement. If you mainly want standard FM, Japan FM, manual tuning and a choice of speaker or wired headphones, it is a closer fit.
Next, consider where you will listen. On a desk or bedside table, the built-in speaker can be convenient; for a room that needs substantial volume, plan to use headphones or choose a different kind of audio device. For travel or outdoor listening, its 76g weight and removable antenna are attractive, but reception still depends on location and signal conditions.
Finally, account for what you may need to buy separately. Check whether the package includes a compatible USB-C-to-USB-C DAC cable if AMP mode matters to you, and verify the battery format if you expect to keep a spare. The radio’s headline functions are useful only if the accessories and listening setup you need are available to you.
