“Figma-inspired video editing and motion design” covers three different workflows: Figma Motion for keyframed animation tied to a design, video playback inside interactive prototypes, and Figma Weave for node-based AI video workflows. None should be confused with a verified, conventional multitrack video-editing suite. Choose by the deliverable: interface motion, a prototype that plays video, or AI-generated and processed video.
Which Figma workflow fits the job?
| Workflow | Best fit | How you control it | What it hands off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Figma Motion | Interface animations, animated components, micro-interactions, and motion specifications connected to a design | A timeline with keyframes, animation styles, timing and easing controls | Rendered animation in MP4, GIF, SVG, or WebM, plus inspectable motion details and code-copy options |
| Video in prototypes | A clickable design experience where a video should play as part of the prototype | Video fill adjustments, playback settings, and prototype triggers and actions | A prototype with video behavior; the cited documentation does not establish a finished standalone video-editing workflow |
| Figma Weave | Node-based AI video animation, style transfer, and reusable creative workflows | Inspectable nodes and workflow steps, with earlier changes able to affect later steps | Generated or processed output that can be brought into Figma Design |
These are complementary routes, not interchangeable editing modes. Motion keeps animation connected to design elements; prototype video makes playback part of an interactive experience; Weave is a separate generative workflow.
What Figma Motion does
Figma describes Motion as a keyframe-based timeline on the design canvas. Its June 24, 2026 launch post says creators can animate position, scale, rotation, and opacity; apply, sequence, or stack preset styles; and use time-based comments to discuss motion. The product page also lists Fade, Rotate, Scale, and Resize presets, along with autokey, Bézier curves, and springs. Figma Motion launch post and product information
This setup is aimed at motion that belongs to a design system or interface: a loading state, hover response, animated logo, or component behavior. Because the animation is authored alongside the design, Figma presents it as useful for collaboration and developer handoff—not just as a way to render a clip.

Exports and developer handoff
Figma lists MP4, GIF, SVG, and WebM exports for animated frames. It also describes developer inspection and options to copy animation code in CSS, JSON, or React. Those options make Motion useful when the final result needs to be viewed as a rendered animation or translated into implementation details. An export format list, however, does not by itself make Motion a complete post-production editor.
Access described at launch
Figma’s June 24, 2026 launch post said Starter users had limited exports; Full seat users on all plans could access motion primitives and export; and full design-system integration and the Motion agent were available on paid plans. These are the terms stated in that launch post, not a guarantee of current packaging. Check Figma’s current plan and seat details before relying on a specific capability. Figma’s Motion launch post

Can you edit video in Figma?
You can place video in a Figma design and configure its playback in a prototype. Figma’s Help Center says video is represented as a fill rather than a dedicated layer type; you can add a video from your computer or use the importer, then preview or scrub it. The documented controls include scaling, rotation, dimensions, crop and reposition, fill mode, blend modes, and masks. Figma Help Center: Use videos in prototypes
That is useful for showing how a video appears and behaves inside a product flow or clickable concept. The documentation covers basic video adjustments and prototype playback behavior; it does not establish a conventional nonlinear editing suite with a multitrack timeline and broad audio-finishing tools. If the goal is a polished standalone video requiring that kind of post-production, the documented Figma workflows do not demonstrate that Figma fills the role.

Add and configure a video in a prototype
- Add the clip: In a Figma design file, add video from your computer or use the importer. Figma treats the video as a fill.
- Adjust its appearance: Preview or scrub the video, then use the documented sizing, rotation, crop/reposition, fill-mode, blend-mode, or masking controls to fit it into the design.
- Set playback behavior: In prototype properties, configure autoplay, looping, and sound as needed.
- Connect triggers and actions: Figma documents triggers for reaching a timestamp or for the video ending. Available actions include playing or pausing, muting or unmuting, setting a time, and jumping forward or backward.
Use these settings to make video respond as part of a prototype; they are playback and interaction controls, not evidence of a full editing timeline.
When Figma Weave makes sense
Figma Weave is a separate, node-based creative workflow. Figma describes it for AI video animation, style transfer, reusable workflows, and moving output into Figma Design. Its page says that workflow steps can be inspected and adjusted, with earlier edits propagating through later steps. It also describes transferring a style while preserving the original motion, plus a workflow for generating, positioning, and animating 3D models.

Weave is relevant when the work involves generating or transforming video through a reusable sequence of creative steps. It is not the same as Motion’s keyframe timeline or the playback settings for a video embedded in a prototype.
A practical decision rule
- Choose Motion when the animation should stay tied to editable interface designs or components, and developers need motion details to inspect.
- Choose video in prototypes when a clickable experience needs to play a clip with configured playback behavior.
- Consider Weave when the desired workflow is node-based AI video creation or style transfer, with output that may move into Figma Design.
- Look beyond these documented workflows if you need a conventional timeline editor for a finished standalone video, especially where multitrack editing and audio finishing are central.
Why motion design matters in the workflow
Figma’s prototyping page reports that its State of the Designer 2026 report found motion design and prototyping were cited by 29% of designers as among the most in-demand skills. That is a finding reported by Figma and attributed to its 2026 report; it should not be read as an independently verified measure of the wider labor market. Figma Motion launch post
