Field hockey is played on a marked field with a stick and ball; ice hockey is played on an ice rink with skates, a stick, and a puck. Both sports aim to score with a stick, but their playing surfaces, movement, protective gear, and rules are different.

How the playing surfaces compare

Field hockey takes place on a marked field. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) defines the field of play—the area inside the markings—as 91.40 m by 55.00 m in its January 2024 facilities guidance. That measurement excludes the run-off area around the field. The guidance recommends larger run-offs where possible and requires them for higher-level international competition, so the space beyond the markings can differ by venue and competition.

Ice hockey is played on a rink enclosed by boards, with lines and face-off markings dividing the ice into zones. The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) 2026/27 rulebook specifies a rink 60 m long and 26–30 m wide for IIHF-governed competitions. Local, recreational, and other league facilities may follow different applicable requirements.

How the rules and style of play differ

Field hockey

FIH rules cover matters such as free hits, the required separation from an opponent taking a free hit in the cited rules context, and restrictions on playing the ball into the circle from certain attacking free hits in the 23-metre area. The specific rule and its application depend on the competition’s current rules. FIH’s December 2018 announcement described changes effective January 2019, including a four-quarter match format; it is historical context, not a complete current rulebook. Check the FIH rules material for the applicable version.

Ice hockey

IIHF rules use rink markings to define areas of play and cover situations such as offsides, icing, and penalties. Ice hockey also includes physical contact, but the rules governing body checking and its limits depend on the competition. The IIHF’s explanatory overview describes the sport’s protective equipment and physical element; the IIHF 2026/27 rulebook is the governing reference for IIHF competition. Rules can differ by age, level, and league, so a general comparison cannot establish what contact is allowed in every setting.

What equipment a beginner needs

For field hockey

  • A field hockey stick suited to the player’s age, level, and intended use.
  • A field hockey ball for practice or play.
  • Any protective equipment required or recommended by the player’s team or competition.

FIH material describes balls, and Commonwealth Games event requirements published in a 2019 edition specified an approved ball for that event. That event rule should not be treated as a universal purchasing requirement. Confirm equipment and safety requirements with the local club or governing body. See the Commonwealth Games event requirements for their stated scope.

For ice hockey

  • An ice hockey stick and puck.
  • Ice hockey skates with blades.
  • Protective equipment appropriate to the player and required by the league.

Equipment requirements and sizing should be checked with the team or competition, particularly for younger players. The IIHF overview explains the role of protective equipment but does not establish identical requirements for every league; consult the relevant governing body’s rules and guidance.

Which differences matter when choosing a sport?

The practical choice depends first on which surface and facilities are available to you: field hockey requires access to a suitable field, while ice hockey requires an ice rink. The skills and equipment also differ substantially—field players move on foot and use a ball, while ice hockey players skate and handle a puck. Local access and cost vary by location, and the sources cited here do not establish a general cost comparison.
