Fiber is often the practical choice when suitable endpoints and a provisioned, diverse terrestrial route are available. Satellite is valuable when a site is remote, mobile, or lacks workable terrestrial connectivity. Choose by comparing the complete source-to-production path, required service protections, and equivalent route-specific quotes—not by assuming one technology has a fixed latency, reliability, or price advantage.
What a broadcast contribution link does
A contribution link carries signals toward a production centre, where post-production may take place. The ITU-T defines contribution as “Carriage of signals to production centres where post-production processing may take place.” That is different from primary or secondary distribution, which delivers finished programming onward to audiences. ITU-T terminology
The distinction matters when comparing links: the relevant question is whether the path can transport the required live or recorded feeds into the production workflow with acceptable delay and quality—not simply whether it provides internet access.
When fiber or satellite fits better
Fiber: a strong fit for reachable, provisioned sites
Fiber can be a strong option when both ends have suitable access and a provider can provision a route that meets the production requirement. Confirm that the proposed path is actually available to the source and destination, and whether any claimed backup uses a physically or operationally separate route. A fiber endpoint at one site does not establish that a suitable end-to-end service exists.

Satellite: reach, mobility, and terrestrial independence
Satellite can connect remote production locations where terrestrial infrastructure is absent or impractical, and may suit mobile or changing locations. Eutelsat describes satellite contribution services for delivering live or recorded feeds from remote production sites to central facilities, including point-to-point and point-to-multipoint options. Those are provider descriptions; confirm coverage, capacity, equipment, service terms, and performance for the actual sites. Eutelsat video contribution
Eutelsat also presents its OneWeb LEO service as an IP-oriented contribution option for remote, mobile, or congested settings and mentions cellular bonding. This identifies a service category, not independent proof of broadcast-link performance. Eutelsat OneWeb video contribution

Latency: measure the production workflow, not the access label
The reviewed sources do not establish a controlled, matched-route latency comparison for broadcast contribution links. A single number for “fiber latency” or “satellite latency” would conceal differences in route, satellite architecture, encoding, buffering, decoding, and production processing. Ask providers for one-way transport delay as well as the end-to-end delay measured or specified for the intended workflow.
For satellite, identify the service architecture and the gateway path involved. A provider’s description of a LEO service as low latency is not an independent measurement of the delay your production will experience. Consumer broadband figures also should not be treated as broadcast contribution measurements. Reliability depends on the protected end-to-end path
Neither medium guarantees reliability on its own. The EBU advises broadcasters to consider forward error correction, diversity, low latency, redundancy, and robust encoding and decoding for quality and reliability over IP. It also stresses agreeing the required contribution quality of service with the provider. EBU Audio Contribution over IP
For fiber, ask what route and network diversity actually exist: two services may share a conduit, exchange, or other failure point. For satellite, establish the service footprint and gateway dependencies, and ask how weather effects are managed. Signal robustness also depends on the contribution design. NRK’s delivery requirements call out encoder type and settings, compression, and location-camera radio use; for satellite, modulation selection involves a trade-off between transponder capacity and signal robustness. Occasional event coverage and a permanent circuit can have different cost structures, so specify how often and for how long the link will be used. Include required terminals or interfaces, installation, capacity charges, backup paths, and support in the comparison rather than looking only at a headline service charge.
When a hybrid design is worth considering
Fiber and satellite need not be competing single-path choices. TDF describes an SNG system with dual fiber and satellite functionality, and notes that fiber at capture sites can support antenna return, IP coordination, and Internet or Ethernet links. A hybrid arrangement may use terrestrial service where available and satellite where reach or path independence is needed. TDF
Ask whether the proposed “backup” is genuinely independent at the points that matter, and whether the production equipment and operating procedure can switch to it in the time the event allows. A second medium is useful only if it protects against a failure mode the primary path can actually encounter.
Quick Recap
Questions to settle before choosing a link
- What are the exact source and destination sites, and does each have a suitable fiber endpoint?
- What signal format, bitrate, and number of simultaneous feeds must the link carry?
- What one-way transport latency and end-to-end delay are acceptable after encoding, buffering, decoding, and production processing?
- What availability commitment applies to the complete route, and what physical or network diversity supports it?
- For satellite, what orbit or service design and gateway path are used, and how are weather effects handled?
- Is the requirement occasional event coverage or a permanent circuit?
- What are the installation lead time, operational support, capacity charges, equipment requirements, and total cost for equivalent redundancy?
How to make the decision
- Map the route. Confirm the precise source and production endpoints, terrestrial access, satellite footprint, and any gateway dependencies.
- Specify the feed and workflow. Give providers the formats, bitrates, simultaneous feed count, encoder settings, and acceptable delay through production.
- Define protection. State the required service quality and availability, then check route diversity, error correction, redundancy, and operating procedures.
- Compare like-for-like proposals. Request costs and lead times for the same usage pattern, capacity, support, equipment, and backup design.
- Choose by constraint. Favor a route that meets the operational requirement: fiber where suitable terrestrial service is available and dependable; satellite where reach, mobility, or terrestrial independence is decisive; hybrid where the added path addresses a real risk.
