Fiber internet sends data over optical fiber, but the service available at a particular address, the installation details, and the speed you experience on Wi-Fi all depend on the provider and home setup. Check availability by address, ask the provider what installation and equipment it includes, and test over Ethernet before assuming a Wi-Fi speed test reflects the connection delivered to your home.
What is fiber internet?
Fiber internet carries data over optical fiber. Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) describe all-fiber connections that reach a subscriber’s building. The Fiber Broadband Association (FBA) says fiber can support multi-gigabit speeds and provide more bandwidth than copper or wireless connections; your plan and in-home network still determine what you can use. Learn how the FBA defines fiber service.
Download speed describes how quickly data arrives, while upload speed describes how quickly it leaves your devices. Some plans offer similar advertised rates in both directions, often called symmetrical speeds, but whether those plans are available to you depends on your provider and address.
Is fiber internet available at my address?
Check using the service address on each provider’s website or by contacting the provider. Broad coverage statistics cannot confirm serviceability at an individual home: network buildout can vary by street, building, and provider.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In a 2025 update, the FBA reported that fiber passed more than 60% of U.S. primary households. It also reported nearly 100 million total U.S. FTTH passings when redundant builds are included—a different measure that counts overlapping network builds. For Canada, the FBA estimated that fiber was available to nearly 75% of homes. These are national estimates, not address-level availability checks. See the FBA’s 2025 update.
When checking a specific service, compare the exact plan’s advertised download and upload rates, typical performance disclosures, monthly price and fees, data caps, and contract or promotional terms. A broadband label for the exact tier can help you review pricing, caps, bundling, and typical network performance; check the provider’s current label and terms rather than assuming those details are the same across plans.

What happens when fiber is installed?
There is no single installation process that applies to every provider or property. The work can depend on the building, existing wiring, and the provider’s network and equipment. The sources cited here do not establish a generally applicable installation duration, fee, or preparation checklist, so confirm the arrangements directly with the provider serving your address.
Before booking, ask the provider:
- How long the appointment is expected to take and whether someone must be home.
- Which areas the installer needs to access, including any exterior or interior locations.
- What equipment is included and where it will be placed.
- Whether installation or other charges apply, and whether any preparation is required.
- Who supplies and supports the ONT and router, and whether you may use your own router.
What is an ONT, and do you need a special router?
An optical network terminal (ONT) is part of the fiber connection at the customer’s premises. It connects the provider’s fiber service to the equipment used for the home network. An ONT is not necessarily integrated with the router, and providers may differ in whether they allow customers to replace or relocate equipment. Ask your provider which device handles each role and what equipment it supports.

The router creates the home network and provides Wi-Fi. To choose or assess one, check its WAN and LAN port speeds, Wi-Fi generation and bands, coverage for your home’s layout, and compatibility with the provider’s equipment. Also consider whether your devices and home wiring can use the speed you are paying for. Do not assume that any router works with every fiber provider.
Why is Wi-Fi slower than my fiber plan?
The advertised plan rate is not a promise that every device will reach the same speed over Wi-Fi. Distance from the router, walls, interference, equipment age, and wireless conditions can all affect throughput; the test device and server can also influence the result. These factors can affect latency as well. The FBA discusses in-home network limitations and ways to reduce them in its fiber resources.

Use this diagnostic sequence to distinguish a possible Wi-Fi limitation from the connection reaching your home:
- Test over Ethernet near the router. If possible, connect a capable computer directly to the router with Ethernet and run a speed test. Check that the router port, computer, and cable can handle the speed being tested.
- Compare with a Wi-Fi test in the affected room. Use the same device and, where practical, the same test service and server so the results are easier to compare.
- Inspect the wireless path. If the wired result is close to the plan but Wi-Fi is slower, consider router placement, distance, walls, interference, and whether the router or device is older or less capable.
- Consider an in-home network change. Ethernet can provide a direct connection where practical; a Wi-Fi mesh system may help cover a larger or more complex home. Neither is a guaranteed fix. Check equipment support and your home’s layout before investing.
For service above one gigabit, the FBA notes that a direct router-to-computer connection may be needed to realize the benefit. That result also depends on the router ports, computer, cable, and test setup supporting the higher rate.

Can you move the ONT or extend fiber to another room?
Do not assume you can move the ONT yourself: placement, relocation, and customer-owned equipment rules are provider-specific. Ask the provider before changing its installation or equipment.
An indoor fiber extension kit is a separate option for extending an existing in-home connection; it does not perform the provider’s outside-plant installation. The FBA’s announcement for Lightera’s InvisiLight Home Fiber Kit describes a wall-mounted fiber module, pre-terminated fiber spool, Ethernet cable, adhesive, and media converters. The announcement quotes Lightera’s Michael Perry describing the product as enabling users to install fiber within the home. That vendor statement concerns the extension kit, not installation of residential ISP service. Check compatibility and current availability before considering the product. Read the FBA announcement.
What should you compare between fiber providers?
Compare offers for your own address, not broad coverage claims or a headline speed alone. Review:
- Availability and the exact service tier offered at your address.
- Advertised download and upload speeds, plus typical performance disclosures.
- Monthly price, fees, data caps, contract terms, and promotional pricing conditions.
- Whether an ONT and router are included, who supports them, and whether your own router is permitted.
- Installation appointment requirements, access needs, and any charges.
- Whether the equipment and wired or wireless connection support your devices and the size and layout of your home.
An FBA summary of a 2024 consumer study by RVA Market Research and Consulting LLC reported a survey pool of approximately 3,000–4,000 randomly selected consumers in the U.S. and Canada. In that study, 65% of respondents considered fiber the best internet method; 70% cited reliability and 64% cited download speed among the most important reasons for switching. The study’s speed-test comparisons covered subsets of users of DSL, cable, fixed and mobile wireless, satellite, and fiber, and reported higher download and upload speeds, lower cost per megabit, and fewer outages among FTTH users. These are study findings, not a guarantee for every provider or location. Read the FBA’s 2024 consumer-study summary.
