Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Installation, equipment, cancellation, and return rules vary by provider, so verify those details before placing an order or ending service.
Is fiber internet available at my address?
Availability is specific to the address—and sometimes to the unit within a building. A provider may serve one part of a street or apartment complex without being able to connect every home there.
How do I check fiber availability?
- Enter your complete address in the FCC National Broadband Map. Review the listed providers, reported technology, and maximum advertised download and upload speeds.
- Enter the same address in the provider’s own checker. Confirm that the result identifies fiber and that the provider can accept an order for your exact home or unit.
- If the results conflict, ask the provider whether a site survey or construction is needed and keep its response. The FCC map accepts availability challenges when its listing appears inaccurate.
The FCC map is a useful starting point, not a performance or pricing guarantee. The FCC says it shows reported availability, not actual network performance, affordability, or adoption. For map reporting, a provider may report service as available if a connection exists or existed at the location, or if routine installation could begin within 10 business days of a request without extraordinary network-extension charges or delays. That 10-business-day standard is not a promise of your appointment date.
The FCC’s challenge guidance covers cases such as a provider being unable to offer installation within the availability standard, failing to install on the agreed date, quoting more than its standard installation charge, denying a service request, or reporting the wrong technology. See the FCC map for location information and its challenge process.

How should I compare fiber plans at my address?
Compare plans only after confirming that each is actually orderable at your address. The FCC map can help with reported availability, technology, and advertised speeds; check the provider’s current disclosures and service agreement for the commercial details it does not establish.
- Download and upload speeds, and whether the figures are maximum advertised speeds or measured results.
- Total recurring price after any introductory period, plus applicable taxes and fees.
- Installation options, appointment timing, and any possible construction charges.
- Included equipment and whether your own router is permitted.
- Contract, cancellation, final-bill, and equipment-return terms.
What happens during fiber installation?
The work depends on whether fiber has already been brought to the building and whether the home has a fiber termination point. A technician may need to extend the connection to the premises and install provider equipment; an existing connection may make setup simpler.
What to ask before the appointment
- Does this order qualify for self-install, or is a technician required?
- What equipment will be installed, and where can it be placed?
- Does an adult need to be present?
- What is the standard installation charge, and could additional construction cost extra?
- What appointment dates are available, and when will service become active?
These questions help distinguish routine installation from a network extension or an additional provider-specific charge. The FCC’s availability standard concerns routine installation and extraordinary extension costs; it does not set a universal installation price or appointment schedule.
Can I install fiber internet myself?
Sometimes. Whether self-install is available depends on the provider and whether the necessary connection and termination equipment are already in place. Confirm eligibility with the ISP rather than assuming that an existing fiber line means you can complete setup without a technician.

For one provider-specific example, GFiber says it offers free self-install and professional installation. Its FAQ says a technician will install a Fiber Jack if one is not already present, and that professional installation typically takes about two hours. GFiber also says homes with previous GFiber service may be eligible for self-install. These are GFiber’s terms, not an industry-wide installation duration or guarantee. See GFiber’s support FAQ.
Do not disconnect existing internet service until the new connection is working. Confirm start dates and final billing with both providers; there is no universal overlap or cancellation rule established for every ISP.
Do I need a modem or an ONT for fiber?
An optical network terminal (ONT) is the device that terminates the fiber connection at the premises. Providers may supply an ONT, a router, or a gateway combining functions; equipment names and requirements differ. Ask the provider which device is included and whether any supplied equipment must remain connected.
GFiber calls its termination box a Fiber Jack (ONT). Its FAQ says a third-party router can connect to the Fiber Jack’s Ethernet port. That is a GFiber example, not a rule for every fiber provider. See GFiber’s support FAQ.

Can I use my own router with fiber internet?
Possibly, but check the provider’s requirements before buying anything. A customer-owned router is optional, not a default requirement: the ISP may include a router or gateway, require its equipment for authentication or voice service, or limit which devices it supports.
Check compatibility before buying
- Confirm that the ISP permits a customer-owned router and whether its own gateway must stay in use.
- Check the router’s Ethernet WAN and LAN port speeds against your plan, especially for multigigabit service.
- Confirm that the router supports the Wi-Fi features you want and that the provider’s equipment can connect to it as intended.
GFiber’s router guidance recommends Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, or Wi-Fi 7 for its service and gives Ethernet-port requirements for its one-gigabit and multigigabit plans. Those are GFiber-specific recommendations, not universal fiber standards. A Wi-Fi 7 router may be worth considering if your provider allows your own equipment and your plan benefits from its capabilities, but check what is already included before purchasing. GFiber’s guidance does not endorse a specific retail router model. See GFiber’s router guidance.
An ONT is provider-side optical termination equipment, not an ordinary router upgrade. Do not treat a replacement ONT, fiber splicing tool, fiber patch cable, or repair kit as a routine consumer purchase; ask the provider to handle optical equipment and line work.

GFiber says customers can cancel at any time without an annual contract commitment or early termination fee. That policy is specific to GFiber and may change; it does not establish the terms of other providers. See GFiber’s support FAQ.
Do I have to return my provider’s equipment?
Follow your provider’s equipment-return instructions and keep proof of return. Ask which devices must be sent back, how to return them, when the deadline falls, and what happens if equipment is late or missing.
GFiber says its equipment is included in the monthly price and warns that customers may owe a replacement fee if equipment is not returned within 60 days after cancellation. The deadline and fee are GFiber-specific; verify the current policy for your account and do not assume another provider uses the same terms. See GFiber’s support FAQ.
