FFmpeg’s Invalid data found when processing input error does not identify one specific fault. It means FFmpeg could not process data it encountered; the cause might be an unreadable or damaged media file, a URL returning something other than media, an unsupported container, or a problem with a concat list. Start by identifying which input fails, then probe that exact input with ffprobe before changing the stream settings.
What the error means—and what it does not
FFmpeg 8.0’s official error reference names the corresponding error AVERROR_INVALIDDATA and describes it as “Invalid data found when processing input.” FFmpeg 8.0 error reference
The message alone does not tell you whether the problem is the media, a URL response, a container, or an input list. Nor does it establish that YouTube rejected the stream. Find out whether FFmpeg fails while opening an input or later while processing it: those are different failure points and need different investigations.
Find the input and failure stage
- Keep the complete command and log. Look for the last
-iinput named before the error and the nearby log lines. If several inputs are involved, test them individually rather than guessing which one failed. - Determine when the error occurs. A failure immediately after an input is opened points toward that input or its format. If FFmpeg has already been processing the media, note the point at which the error appears; the input may be readable initially but encounter invalid data later.
- Separate FFmpeg input errors from YouTube ingest problems. Do not change the stream key, bitrate, or other output options until you know whether FFmpeg can read the source. The error text by itself does not show that YouTube is responsible.
Probe the exact input with ffprobe
Run ffprobe against the same file or URL supplied to FFmpeg—not a renamed copy or a different download:

ffprobe -hide_banner -i INPUT
Replace INPUT with the actual path or URL. Check whether the output identifies a container, reports a duration, and lists the expected audio or video streams. A filename extension is not proof of what the file contains; a file with an unexpected extension may still be readable if its contents are valid. FFmpeg’s troubleshooting guidance recommends probing the input and checking the detected format and streams. FFmpeg documentation
If ffprobe identifies the container and streams
Confirm that the detected media and streams match what your loop command expects. If the error occurs only after processing begins, retain the full log and investigate the failing point in the input. Avoid changing unrelated YouTube output options while isolating this issue.

If ffprobe cannot identify the input
Verify that the path exists and is readable, or that the URL resolves to media. A URL can return an HTML error page, a login page, or another non-media response; an incomplete download or corrupted file can also fail to probe. An unsupported container or missing demuxer is another possibility, but consider it only if the input and FFmpeg build give you reason to suspect it. These are possible explanations, not conclusions about your particular file.
If your loop uses a concat list
If your command includes -f concat -i LIST, FFmpeg is reading a concat script as well as the media files named inside it. Check both layers:

- Make sure
LISTis the intended concat script and has the expected entries. - Confirm that every referenced file exists and is readable by the process running FFmpeg.
- Check how relative paths resolve from the script’s location and whether the chosen paths meet the concat demuxer’s safe-path rules.
FFmpeg documents the concat demuxer’s safe option, which rejects unsafe paths when enabled by default, along with its handling of concatenated packet data. FFmpeg formats documentation: concat demuxer Setting -safe 0 changes which paths the demuxer accepts; it does not make corrupt or non-media input valid. Do not add it as a blind fix.
Repair only when the diagnosis supports it
Try repairs on a copy of the source, not your only original. A stream-copy remux can help when packets are mostly valid but the container needs to be rewritten:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c copy output.mp4
This copies encoded streams into a new container; it does not re-encode or repair damaged packets. If the log and media indicate missing presentation timestamps, -fflags +genpts may be relevant. Re-encoding is a last resort when the packets themselves are damaged, not a routine response to this error. These are conditional repair paths, not guaranteed YouTube Live fixes. FFmpeg documentation
After a repair, run ffprobe on the resulting file. Retry the live command only once the local probe or a short local test confirms that the input path is readable. Keep other output settings unchanged while checking whether the input problem is resolved.

Common causes and next checks
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| ffprobe reports no recognizable media format | Verify the file or URL, check for an HTML or other non-media response, and rule out an incomplete download before considering a format or demuxer issue. |
| The file probes, but FFmpeg fails later | Use the full log to locate when processing fails. Check for damage at that point; do not assume the initial probe proves every packet is sound. |
| A concat command fails before the loop starts | Validate the concat script, each listed file, path resolution, and the demuxer’s safe-path behavior. |
| The media is readable locally, but the live stream still fails | Recheck the full log to distinguish input processing from an output or YouTube ingest failure. This error alone cannot identify an ingest problem. |

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded videos looping 24/7, StreamNeo is an alternative to running your own FFmpeg loop: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start your free day.
