If FFmpeg reports dropped frames while streaming to YouTube, first determine where they are being lost. A drop counter can reflect FFmpeg’s frame-rate synchronization—not a bad internet connection. Check the full log, local output, encoding speed, upload capacity, and YouTube’s stream health in that order.

What FFmpeg’s “drop” counter does—and doesn’t—tell you

“Dropped frames” can describe different points in a live pipeline: FFmpeg may discard or duplicate frames to match an output frame rate, the encoder may struggle to keep up, the outbound connection may fail to deliver data reliably, or YouTube may report an ingest problem. These are separate diagnoses.

FFmpeg documents that output -r can duplicate or drop frames to reach a constant frame rate. Its -fps_mode options also affect synchronization: cfr targets a constant rate by duplicating or dropping frames, passthrough passes frames with their timestamps, and vfr can drop frames to prevent duplicate timestamps. Consult the FFmpeg documentation and compare it with your installed build; don’t change an option until you know what the current command and input are doing.

Read the progress line over time, not in isolation. Note fps, speed, dup, drop, output bitrate, and any timestamp or input warnings. FFmpeg’s counter alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving a bad stream. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking encoder errors, CPU load, and the local archive before blaming the connection (YouTube troubleshooting).

Diagnose the problem in order

1. Check the local output and encoder

If you are recording an archive at the same time, play it and check whether the picture or sound is already wrong. YouTube advises checking that local recording, the encoder’s audio and video, CPU load, and encoder errors. If the local file is also bad, focus first on the source, timestamps, frame-rate conversion, or encoding capacity—not network hardware.

Watch whether FFmpeg sustains real-time speed. A sustained speed below 1x, falling fps, rising CPU load, encoder errors, or worsening local output points toward an encoding or source-path problem. Update the encoder software as YouTube advises, then reduce workload or output complexity in a controlled test if the evidence indicates the machine cannot keep up. A CPU upgrade is not a diagnosis.

2. Compare source timing with output frame-rate settings

Check the source’s actual frame rate and timestamps against the output options in your command. An output -r or -fps_mode cfr may be causing FFmpeg to drop or duplicate frames as it converts to the requested rate. Timestamp warnings or unusual input cadence may also matter. Inspect the full command and log before changing synchronization settings; the right choice depends on the input and intended output.

Use -re selectively. FFmpeg describes it as reading input at its native frame rate, mainly for simulating a live source when reading a file. It is not a universal streaming fix. FFmpeg warns that applying a low read rate to an actual capture device or live input can cause packet loss. See the FFmpeg manual for the behavior of the options in your installed version.

3. Check bitrate against stable upload capacity

Measure upload performance and compare stable capacity with your stream’s target bitrate, allowing practical headroom for fluctuations and other network traffic. That headroom is a troubleshooting precaution, not a specific numeric rule published by YouTube. YouTube says to choose settings reliable for the connection and recommends testing before the event.

YouTube’s current encoder settings page lists these H.264 recommended ingestion bitrates. They are recommendations for the listed modes, not proof that a particular connection can sustain them:

Output mode YouTube-listed H.264 bitrate
1080p30 14 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
720p30 6 Mbps

These figures are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026; check the page again because recommendations can change. If the local output looks healthy but delivery is unstable, test the outbound connection. YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider if the connection test identifies a problem (YouTube troubleshooting).

4. Verify rate control, keyframes, and frame-rate limits

For its listed RTMP/RTMPS settings, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and keyframes every 2 seconds, with no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. Its guidance lists support for up to 60 fps. Use these as configuration checks, not as a guaranteed cure for dropped frames: they do not resolve a slow encoder, problematic timestamps, or an unstable connection. Confirm the current values in YouTube’s encoder settings.

5. Check YouTube’s ingest and run a representative test

If the stream will not start, verify that FFmpeg is sending to the intended destination with the current stream key, and read the messages in Live Control Room. Before a real event, run a test with audio and motion similar to the planned stream. Check the Live Control Room preview before starting, then monitor stream health and audio/video quality while it runs. YouTube also recommends checking that the local archive is intact and continues to grow. See its live streaming tips and troubleshooting guidance.

Use latency settings for interaction, not as a dropped-frame fix

Latency is the delay between capture and display; it is not the same as FFmpeg’s frame-drop count. YouTube explains that lower latency leaves the player with less read-ahead buffer, which can make viewers more likely to encounter buffering, especially when the network is congested. Low latency is intended for limited interaction and ultra-low latency for real-time interaction; those modes do not support 4K. Choose a mode for the viewing experience you need rather than treating it as a general fix for FFmpeg drops. See YouTube’s latency guidance.

Common symptoms and what to check next

What you see First checks
drop rises, but the local recording looks clean Inspect output -r, -fps_mode, source timestamps, and the full FFmpeg log before concluding the network is at fault.
speed stays below real time or fps falls Check CPU load, encoder errors, output complexity, and whether the local archive is also affected.
Local output is clean, but YouTube reports stream-health problems Compare target bitrate with stable upload capacity, test the outbound connection, and check Live Control Room messages.
Stream does not start Verify the destination and current stream key, then inspect FFmpeg errors and Live Control Room messages.
Viewers buffer despite a healthy-looking local output Investigate delivery and viewer-side conditions separately; review upload stability and whether the selected latency mode leaves enough player buffer.
