The FCC authorized SpaceX to operate 7,500 additional second-generation Starlink satellites on January 9, 2026, bringing the authorized Gen2 total to 15,000. The decision could support Starlink’s direct-to-cell connectivity outside the United States and supplemental coverage within the United States; it is not an announcement that mobile service is now available everywhere.
What the FCC authorized
The headline number is the resulting total, not the number of satellites newly approved in this decision. The FCC’s January 9, 2026 announcement says the agency authorized 7,500 additional Gen2 satellites, bringing the authorized total to 15,000 worldwide.
For mobile connectivity, the FCC describes the system as providing direct-to-cell connectivity outside the United States and supplemental coverage within the United States. The announcement does not set a consumer launch date, give a coverage percentage, or guarantee service in every location.
What satellite-to-phone coverage means
“Direct-to-cell” refers to communications directly between satellites and mobile devices such as cellular phones. In the United States, the FCC’s 2024 Supplemental Coverage from Space order authorized SpaceX operations using PCS G Block spectrum leased from T-Mobile, subject to FCC conditions. The order identifies the relevant bands as 1910–1915 MHz for Earth-to-space and 1990–1995 MHz for space-to-Earth.

That U.S. spectrum arrangement and its conditions come from the 2024 FCC order; they are not newly granted by the January 2026 satellite authorization. The same 2024 order separately addressed certain direct-to-cell operations outside the United States using previously authorized Gen2 satellites.
Does approval mean you can use Starlink Mobile now?
No. A satellite authorization permits specified operations under regulatory conditions; it does not establish that a retail service is active for every carrier, country, plan, phone, or location. Starlink describes Direct to Cell as partner-delivered in approved countries, so availability depends on the market and participating provider.

Before relying on the service, check with your carrier for your country, plan, supported device, and local availability. The FCC’s authorization announcement does not settle those consumer-service details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need a special phone or Starlink equipment?
Starlink says its Direct to Cell service requires no specialized or additional hardware. That does not identify every compatible consumer phone, so it is not a guarantee that any particular model will work. Check compatibility with the participating carrier or service provider.
