Build a household kit for everyday emergencies
FEMA’s Are You Ready? An In-Depth Guide to Citizen Preparedness recommends having food, water, and other supplies to last at least 72 hours. That is a preparedness target, not a prediction that every emergency will last three days. Choose supplies for the people in your household, the hazards where you live, and whether you would shelter at home or need to leave.
Core supplies
Ready.gov’s emergency supply checklist includes these categories. Use it as a planning aid rather than a rule that every household needs every item:
- Drinking water and food that can be stored safely, plus a manual can opener if needed.
- A first-aid kit and prescription medications; include needed glasses or other essential personal supplies.
- A battery-powered or hand-crank radio with extra batteries, a flashlight, and spare batteries.
- A whistle, dust mask, sanitation and hygiene supplies, and a wrench or pliers.
- Local maps, copies of important documents, and some cash.
- Blankets, sturdy clothing and shoes, and a fire extinguisher where appropriate.
- Infant formula and diapers, pet food and water, or children’s activities when relevant to your family.
Tailor and maintain the kit
Account for medication schedules, dietary needs, infants, older adults, disabilities or access needs, pets, and local climate. Store supplies where household members can reach them, and review food, batteries, medications, and other dated items regularly so you can replace expired or depleted supplies. Keep important documents and contact details accessible without relying on a working internet connection.

Choose supplies for where your family may be
A single home kit may not help if family members are separated or must evacuate. FEMA’s guide also discusses smaller workplace and vehicle supplies. Match the kit to its setting: a home supply can support sheltering, while a portable bag should be easy to take when leaving. Smaller sets of essentials can help at work or in a vehicle.

A generic package cannot establish that it meets every family’s needs.

Make a family communication and meeting plan
Supplies work better when everyone knows how to find one another and what to do if plans change. FEMA’s Plan Ahead for Disasters guidance is a starting point for making a household plan. Write down contact information and agree on meeting arrangements before an event or emergency.
- Choose a meeting place near home and another outside your neighborhood in case you cannot return.
- Decide how family members will contact one another if they are apart; include an out-of-area contact if useful.
- Make sure children and caregivers know whom to contact and where to go.
- Know how to receive local emergency alerts and follow instructions from local emergency management officials if an actual alert is issued.
Watch a solar eclipse without risking your eyesight
Emergency supplies and eclipse eye protection solve different problems. For direct viewing of the Sun during a partial or annular solar eclipse, use a safe solar viewer every time. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe, regardless of how dark their lenses appear. NASA’s Eclipse Viewing Safety guidance says viewers should comply with ISO 12312-2; inspect them before use and discard damaged viewers. Supervise children.

During totality
For a total solar eclipse, direct viewing without eye protection is safe only during the brief interval when the Moon completely covers the Sun’s bright face. Put your viewer back on as soon as any bright solar surface reappears. Totality does not occur during partial or annular eclipses, so those events require a safe viewer whenever looking directly at the Sun.
Using a camera, telescope, or binoculars
Do not look through a camera, binoculars, or telescope while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer. Those optical devices need a special-purpose solar filter securely attached at the front. NASA advises seeking expert guidance on suitable filters. A pinhole projector provides an indirect way to view the eclipse without looking directly at the Sun. For lengthy outdoor viewing, protect your skin from the Sun as well.

Check event details for your location
Eclipse dates, paths, and local viewing conditions are location-specific. Verify them with current official information rather than relying on an old event calendar. NASA’s page for the total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026 describes a path across a remote area of northern Russia and parts of Greenland, Iceland, the North Atlantic, Spain, and northwestern Portugal. NASA said totality would last less than two minutes for most locations along that path and under two and a half minutes at the longest locations. That event has passed; its details are historical, not a forecast for a future eclipse. See NASA’s August 12, 2026 eclipse information for that event’s published path and timing.
“Rare astronomical events” can refer to different phenomena, including geomagnetic storms, meteor events, or asteroid impacts. Their hazards and appropriate responses are not interchangeable. Do not assume an eclipse itself will cause a power outage or that one special kit addresses every space-related hazard. For a real warning or emergency, follow instructions from local authorities and the relevant official source for that hazard.
