A fake recruiter can turn an ordinary take-home coding test into a malware delivery route. In the incident reported by CSO Online on September 12, 2024, researchers found malicious Python bytecode hidden in job-assessment projects. When run, it contacted a command-and-control server and executed Python commands sent back to it. Treat an unfamiliar assessment as untrusted code: inspect it before execution and use an isolated environment without access to work credentials or personal secrets.
How the 2024 Python assessment scam worked
Attackers posed as recruiters for financial firms and sent developers coding assessments hosted on GitHub. The projects looked like normal interview tasks, but their compiled Python files contained malicious code. The social-engineering tactic mattered: candidates were asked to build or run the project, fix a bug, and return proof of their work, giving the malware a reason to execute locally.
One archive, Python_Skill_Assessment.zip, presented itself as a Python password manager and asked the candidate to ensure it ran before adding a password-backup feature. Another, Python_Skill_Test.zip, was labeled a “Capital One Technical Interview” and instructed the applicant to build the project, find and fix a bug, then rebuild it. Researchers also found a RookeryCapital_PythonTest.zip sample. These names and examples are from the 2024 reporting; they do not establish that the named firms were involved.
CSO Online reported one developer’s account: a recruiter claiming to work for Capital One contacted him on LinkedIn with a GitHub homework task. He was asked to fix a bug, push his changes, and send screenshots. This is a single reported victim account, not evidence of how many people were targeted or infected. CSO Online’s September 12, 2024 report describes the incident and the researchers’ findings.

What the trojanized Python files did
The malicious code was stored in PYC files, Python’s compiled bytecode format, rather than being readily visible as ordinary source code. In the samples described, the code was additionally Base64-encoded. It acted as a downloader: it made an HTTP connection to a command-and-control server, received Python commands, and executed them.
ReversingLabs said the code was identical to samples seen in an August 2023 campaign involving fake PyPI packages, including one called VMConnect. That overlap informed the researchers’ assessment linking the 2024 activity to Lazarus Group. The attribution is an assessment based on analysis and code overlap, not a conclusively established identity.

How later recruitment-linked campaigns differ
Recruitment-themed malware activity continued in later, separately reported campaigns. Their details should not be treated as evidence about the 2024 Python assessment samples.
| Activity and reporting date | Lure and delivery | Reported behavior and attribution |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 Python assessment incident; CSO Online, September 12, 2024 | Fake financial-firm recruiters and GitHub coding projects; malicious code in compiled Python files. | PYC code downloaded and executed commands. Researchers linked the activity to Lazarus Group based on analysis and code overlap; this is an assessment. |
| Graphalgo; ReversingLabs, February 2026 | Cryptocurrency-themed interview tasks delivered through LinkedIn, Facebook, and job-offering forums, with malicious dependencies across GitHub, npm, and PyPI. The campaign targeted JavaScript and Python developers. | ReversingLabs described staged delivery ending in a remote-access trojan able to fetch and execute commands. Its February 12, 2026 analysis counted 192 malicious packages across npm and PyPI; that count applies to Graphalgo, not the 2024 incident. |
| Contagious Interview; Atlassian, September 21, 2026 | A persistent fraudulent recruitment campaign involving malicious coding repositories. | Atlassian attributed it with high confidence to North Korean threat actors and reported risks including theft of credentials, cryptocurrency wallets, API tokens, and corporate access. It also said some infected candidates unintentionally redistributed repositories through legitimate accounts. Atlassian reported hundreds of repositories and associated accounts taken down; this is a platform response count, not a victim or package count. |
For the later campaign accounts, see ReversingLabs’ Graphalgo overview, its February 12, 2026 technical analysis, and Atlassian’s September 21, 2026 account of Contagious Interview.

How to evaluate an unfamiliar coding assessment safely
A believable recruiter, polished project, or recognizable company name does not make a repository safe. Avoid running code simply to meet an interview deadline. Use a dedicated isolated environment, not a corporate workstation or a device holding production credentials. Atlassian also recommends disabling Visual Studio Code automatic tasks by setting task.allowAutomaticTasks to off; check your VS Code settings and confirm the value before opening or running an unfamiliar project.
- Verify the recruiter and opportunity through an independently located, official company contact channel rather than relying only on the account or links that sent the task.
- Inspect the project structure and dependencies before building or running it. Treat compiled files and unfamiliar setup scripts as executable code, even when the visible source appears harmless.
- Keep the assessment environment isolated from browser sessions, password stores, SSH keys, cloud configuration, wallets, work accounts, and other secrets.
- Do not upload changes, screenshots, or other requested materials until you are satisfied the task and its source are legitimate.
These precautions reduce exposure; they cannot establish that a particular repository is safe. The exact 2024 reporting does not provide a prevalence statistic for this incident, and its examples should not be used to estimate how common such attacks are.

What to do if you ran a suspicious interview project
- Disconnect the device from the network. If you suspect compromise, isolate it to limit further communication or access.
- Contact your organization’s security team. Preserve the repository URL, recruiter messages, and commands or steps you used. Do not rely on deleting the project or running an antivirus scan as the sole response.
- From a known-clean device, revoke and rotate exposed access. Revoke active sessions and change passwords; rotate source-control tokens, SSH keys, cloud credentials, API keys, and any other secrets the affected device could reach.
- Protect cryptocurrency assets if keys may be exposed. Move them to a wallet created on a clean device if seed phrases or keys could have been accessed.
- Have the affected device reimaged or reformatted when warranted. Removing the repository alone may leave follow-on malware or persistence behind.
- Report the repository and recruiter account to the relevant platforms, and investigate any downstream accounts or systems the exposed credentials could access.
Atlassian’s incident-response and prevention guidance also recommends that organizations watch for IDEs or terminals unexpectedly starting shells or scripting runtimes, and for scripts accessing browser profiles, password stores, wallets, keychains, SSH directories, cloud configuration, environment files, or shell history—especially when those actions are followed by network uploads. Suspected organizational compromises call for endpoint isolation and reimaging, credential revocation, downstream access investigation, and broader threat hunting.
