A fake “Muse Ads” portal used a browser-in-browser trick to make a phishing page look like a genuine Google or Okta sign-in. People who clicked its “Connect” button could be prompted to enter passwords and multi-factor authentication (MFA) responses into an attacker-controlled page. The incident was a phishing operation—not evidence that Meta’s Muse product or Google and Okta sign-in systems were compromised.
What happened with the fake Muse Ads portal?
Island researchers Oleg Zaytsev and Ofek Ronen reported that operators created museads.ai, a fake advertising product, on September 16, 2026—eight days after Meta announced Muse. The site described itself as “Your AI ads manager for paid media workflows” and invited advertisers to connect accounts and run sponsored placements. Island’s October 6, 2026 report says the portal was part of a broader human-operated phishing platform that also impersonated advertising products associated with Gemini, Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Manus.
The lures presented plausible business tasks such as campaign optimization or spend audits. Their common action was a “Connect” button. Clicking it did not take the visitor to a genuine identity-provider sign-in page; it opened a simulated login window drawn within the phishing page.
How does the browser-in-browser deception work?
A browser-in-browser (BitB) attack imitates the browser interface inside a web page. The fake window can show browser-like controls and a convincing address such as accounts.google.com or an Okta tenant. But the real browser remains on the phishing site’s domain. The displayed address belongs to the imitation, not the actual browser session.

- A visitor opens the lure. A plausible advertising workflow encourages the person to connect a business or advertising account.
- The visitor clicks “Connect.” The page draws a fake browser window rather than redirecting to the real identity provider.
- The visitor enters credentials or responds to an MFA prompt. The phishing interface captures what is submitted. Island reports that operators could select the next prompt in real time, including password retries, SMS or authenticator codes, Google approval or QR flows, and Okta push or number-matching screens.
- An operator can monitor and steer the interaction. Island describes device fingerprinting and Socket.IO communications used to support human control of the flow.
The Hacker News’ October 6 coverage of Island’s findings quotes the researchers: “Clicking it opened a browser drawn inside the real browser. The fake address bar displayed trusted origins such as accounts.google.com or an Okta tenant, while the real browser remained on the phishing domain.” The report also describes the platform’s credential collection and operator-selected MFA prompts.

How can you tell whether the sign-in window is fake?
Check the real browser’s outermost address bar—the one belonging to the browser application—not an address bar, lock icon, tab, QR prompt, or security dialog drawn inside the page. A convincing imitation cannot change the actual site origin. If you are unsure, close the page and navigate independently to the provider’s official site or account portal to confirm whether the integration exists and how to connect it.
Island’s guidance is direct: “Inspect the outermost origin. A page can draw an address bar, lock icon, browser tab, QR prompt, or security dialog. It cannot change the real browser origin.” Do not enter a password or approve an authentication request just because an embedded window looks familiar.

Why an advertising-account login is valuable to attackers
The campaign was aimed at agency staff, media buyers, and administrators of manager accounts. A compromised advertising identity may provide access to business accounts, billing methods, budgets, and multiple clients. Island warns that an attacker could launch unauthorized campaigns, add administrators, lock out the legitimate owner, or sell an established account with a clean spending history. When a manager account connects several clients, one compromised identity can put more than one organization at risk.
Mimecast’s separate, broader July 2026 research describes the ad-account theft market and says an account’s reputation and history can be more valuable to criminals than an immediate budget drain. It also describes recovery as potentially taking weeks or months; that is contextual evidence about ad-account theft generally, not a measured outcome for every person exposed to this particular lure. Mimecast’s report says it tracked 6.4 million detections of systematic Meta Business Manager and Google Ads account theft over four years. That figure is not a count of unique victims of the Muse Ads campaign.

What is known about the campaign’s scale?
Island says its researchers saw hundreds of victim submissions to the phishing platform and that activity was ongoing when its report was written, but it does not provide a more exact total in that statement. Separately, The Hacker News reported Island figures of about 850 paid-ad landings, 26 lookalike ChatGPT destinations, and 71 Google Ads campaign IDs during a three-month observation period ending in August 2026. Those figures describe a broader delivery cluster, not confirmed credential submissions to museads.ai.
How to protect advertising accounts
- Verify the integration independently. Visit the provider’s official site or a confirmed account portal to check that the advertised product and connection flow are real. Treat an unexpected invitation, beta offer, or request to connect an advertising account as a request for account access.
- Use phishing-resistant authentication where available. Island recommends origin-bound passkeys and hardware-backed authentication. These approaches are designed to prevent a fake site from harvesting the reusable password and one-time-code material targeted by this platform. A FIDO2 security key is one category of hardware-backed option; Island’s report does not endorse a particular model.
- Review connected accounts after suspected exposure. Check for unfamiliar administrators or partners, altered recovery details, and campaigns or spending the organization did not approve. Include client accounts reachable through manager-account permissions.
- Contact the platform through official recovery channels. If credentials or an MFA response may have been submitted, secure the linked identity and contact the advertising platform using its official support and account-recovery route. Removing a payment card alone should not be assumed to restore account control.
What this incident does—and does not—show
The reported incident demonstrates a phishing portal impersonating an advertising product and simulating identity-provider login screens. It does not establish a vulnerability in Meta’s actual Muse agent, Google sign-in, or Okta. The central risk is social engineering: persuading someone to submit real credentials or approve or disclose an authentication challenge through an attacker-controlled interface.

Island lists museads.ai among campaign domains and describes technical indicators including /api/create/user, /api/send/ip, and Socket.IO control events such as operator-command and telegram-command. These are indicators reported by the researchers, not a guarantee that a current visit to a domain will behave the same way; infrastructure can change or be taken down. Do not visit suspected phishing sites to investigate them.
