Google Docs formatting problems often come from the document’s layout mode, section settings, pasted styles, or list formatting. Check whether the document uses Pages or Pageless format first, then inspect breaks and spacing before changing fonts or alignment.
The steps below use Google Docs on a computer. Page breaks, headers, footers, page numbers, and page-flow controls require Pages format.
1. Check whether the document uses Pages or Pageless
Check the layout mode if pages, margins, headers, footers, or images look wrong.
| Pages format | Pageless format |
|---|---|
| Shows page boundaries and supports page breaks | Uses one continuously scrolling document without page breaks |
| Supports headers, footers, page numbers, columns, margins, and page orientation | Does not support page-based elements such as headers, footers, or page numbers |
| Images and tables are arranged within page dimensions | Images resize to the screen and wide tables can scroll horizontally |
| Page-flow controls such as “Keep with next” are available | Page-flow controls are unavailable |
On a computer, switch formats using either route:
- Open File → Page setup.
- Select Pages or Pageless.
- Click OK.
You can also choose Format → Switch to Pageless format or Format → Switch to Pages format.

#1 Best Overall
Switching to Pageless hides existing headers, footers, and watermarks. Switching back to Pages makes them visible again; they are not necessarily deleted.
To change the display width in Pageless mode, choose View → Text Width, then select Narrow, Medium, or Wide. This changes your view, not how collaborators see the document.
2. Fix unexpected page breaks and section breaks
A heading stranded at the bottom of a page, a blank page, or a margin that changes partway through the document may point to a break.
Insert a page or section break
Make sure the document is in Pages format. Then choose Insert → Break and select an option:
- Page break starts the following content on a new page.
- Section break (next page) starts a new section on the next page.
- Section break (continuous) starts a new section without moving the following content to a new page.
To make a paragraph, such as a chapter heading, begin on a new page, place the cursor in it or select it. Then choose Format → Line & paragraph spacing → Add page break before. The control is also available from the toolbar’s Line & paragraph spacing menu.
Find hidden section breaks
Section-break lines are hidden by default. Choose View → Show section breaks to display them. This display preference persists for documents you open with your account until you change it.
Remove a page break
Click immediately below the break and press Backspace or Delete until it disappears. If blank space remains, check for a section break, excessive paragraph spacing, or a large header or footer margin.
3. Remove excessive white space
White space can come from paragraph spacing, a header or footer, an image, or a section-specific setting—not just the document’s main margins.
Change page margins
For a section-specific change, open File → Page setup. Choose the relevant section scope at the top, set the margins, and click OK.
Rank #2
You can also adjust the ruler. Select the relevant text, graphic, or image, then drag the ruler’s margin triangle. Be careful not to confuse the page-margin marker with the left-indent markers: moving an indent marker changes paragraph indentation, not the page margin.
Reduce header or footer space
Header and footer margins are controlled separately:
- Click inside the header or footer.
- Choose Format → Headers & footers → More options.
- Select the section or entire document.
- Enter the required header or footer margin.
- Click Apply.
Setting the header or footer margin to 0 removes that additional space, but does not remove the header or footer content.

Select the affected paragraphs and open the toolbar’s Line & paragraph spacing menu, or choose Format → Line & paragraph spacing. Choose Remove space before paragraph, Add space after paragraph, or Custom spacing. Custom spacing lets you enter separate before and after values, then click Apply.
4. Stop headings and paragraphs splitting badly
In Pages format, Google Docs includes page-flow controls for reports and long documents.
- Select the heading or place the cursor in it.
- Open Format → Line & paragraph spacing.
- Choose Keep with next to keep the heading with the paragraph that follows.
- Choose Keep lines together to keep all lines of a paragraph on one page.
- Choose Prevent single lines to stop one line of a paragraph appearing alone at the top or bottom of a page.
These options are unavailable in Pageless format. Switch to Pages format if you cannot find them.
5. Correct alignment, line spacing, and paragraph borders
Select the paragraph or place the cursor in it, then use the toolbar controls or corresponding Format menus.

In Borders and shading, you can change border position, width, dash style, color, background color, and paragraph padding. Click Reset, then Apply, to remove paragraph borders or background color.
6. Repair inconsistent fonts and text styles
Unexpected font changes often happen after content is pasted from a website, PDF, email, or another document. Fix the selected text first; update the document style if the problem affects the whole file.

Select the list and choose Format → Align & indent → Indentation options. Under Special indent, choose Hanging, set the size if needed, and click Apply.
8. Restore missing headers, footers, and page numbers
Confirm that the document is in Pages format. Headers, footers, and page numbers cannot be added in Pageless format.
Add or remove a header or footer
To add one, choose Insert → Page elements → Header or Footer. To remove one, double-click inside it, choose Options, and select Remove header or Remove footer.
Rank #4
For a different first-page header or footer, use the Different first page checkbox. To set section-specific content, insert a section break and uncheck Link to previous. If Link to previous is unavailable, the section may need a break separating it from the previous section.

Google Docs can interpret Markdown while you type or paste it. If text is being converted unexpectedly, open Tools → Preferences and clear Enable Markdown.
When Markdown formatting is intended, use the supported syntax:
- # Heading 1 through ###### Heading 6; a space after the number signs is required.
- [linked text](URL); there must be no space between the closing bracket and opening parenthesis.
To convert Markdown to formatted Docs content, right-click in the document and choose Paste from Markdown. You can also select Docs content, right-click, and choose Copy as Markdown, or export it through File → Download → Markdown (.md).
If pasted text has mixed fonts, colors, or spacing, select the affected passage and reapply the appropriate paragraph style, font, alignment, and spacing. Reformatting the entire document may remove intentional emphasis, so work on the affected section first.

10. Use voice commands or menu search when controls are hard to find
Google Docs supports voice formatting commands such as “Bold”, “Italicize”, “Line spacing double”, “Increase indent”, “Clear formatting”, and “Remove formatting.” List commands include “Create bulleted list” and “Create numbered list.” You can also say “Apply heading 1” through “Apply heading 6”, or commands such as “Insert page break” and “Insert table of contents.”
Open the Format menu with Alt + Shift + O on Windows or ChromeOS, or Control + Option + O on macOS. Menu search is often faster for less obvious commands: press Alt + / or Option + /, type a command, and select the result.
A practical order for diagnosing a broken document
- Check Pages versus Pageless.
- Turn on View → Show section breaks.
- Inspect page setup, section margins, and header or footer margins.
- Check paragraph spacing and page-flow settings.
- Reapply paragraph styles, fonts, and alignment.
- Repair list numbering and indentation.
- Then adjust individual images, tables, or lines.
This order helps because a section break or layout mode can make a local formatting change appear ineffective. For example, changing the document margin may not affect a later section if it has its own page-setup values.
FAQ
Why can’t I insert a page break in Google Docs?
The document may be in Pageless format. Switch it using File → Page setup → Pages → OK, or choose Format → Switch to Pages format. Then choose Insert → Break → Page break.
Why did my Google Docs header or footer disappear?
Pageless format hides headers, footers, and watermarks. Switch back to Pages format. If the element is still missing, check for section-specific header settings or whether Link to previous is disabled.
Why do my page margins change halfway through the document?
A section break may divide the document into separately formatted sections. Turn on View → Show section breaks, then open File → Page setup, choose the affected section scope, set the margins, and click OK.
How do I stop a heading from being left alone at the bottom of a page?
In Pages format, place the cursor in the heading and choose Format → Line & paragraph spacing → Keep with next. You can also choose Add page break before if the heading must always begin on a new page.
How do I make a numbered list start at 1 again?
Double-click the first number, then choose Format → Bullets & numbering → List options → Restart numbering. Enter 1 and click OK.
Why is a font missing from Google Docs?
Google Docs does not expose every font in every language. Search for more fonts and check the font dialog, but availability can still vary by language.
Why does pasted text have different fonts and spacing?
The source content may have brought its own formatting. Select the affected text and reapply the correct paragraph style, font, size, and spacing. If Markdown is being converted unexpectedly, disable Tools → Preferences → Enable Markdown.
The Bottom Line
Many Google Docs formatting problems are structural rather than cosmetic. Check the Pages or Pageless setting, reveal section breaks, inspect section and header margins, and then fix paragraph styles and lists. Once the layout structure is correct, individual font, spacing, and alignment repairs are more likely to work as expected.
