By April 28, 2017, Meta said the Android app was available in more than 150 countries and regions. The later figure gives the clearest official context for the headline’s “over 120 countries” claim; it was not the size of the original launch.
What was Messenger Lite?
Messenger Lite was a standalone Android version of Facebook Messenger designed for people using basic smartphones or slower internet connections. Meta described its purpose this way: “Messenger Lite is a slimmed down version of Messenger that offers the core features of Messenger for markets with slower than average internet speeds and a prevalence of basic Android smartphones.” The statement came from Tom Mulcahy, Engineering Manager for Messenger Lite, in Meta’s October 2, 2016 launch announcement.
The product addressed practical constraints: limited phone storage, entry-level Android hardware, and network conditions that could make a larger messaging app less suitable. Meta said Messenger Lite was under 10 MB at launch. That is a launch-era description, not a current installation-size comparison or an independently measured performance result.
What could users do with it?
Meta presented messaging essentials as the app’s core experience. Users could send text messages, photos, and links to people using either Messenger or Messenger Lite, and receive stickers. The announcement did not provide a complete feature-by-feature comparison with full Messenger, so it does not support a definitive list of everything Lite omitted.

Where and when did Messenger Lite launch?
The October 2016 announcement named five initial rollout countries:
- Kenya
- Tunisia
- Malaysia
- Sri Lanka
- Venezuela
Meta said it expected to bring Messenger Lite to other countries in the coming months. Its later Japanese-language newsroom announcement, dated April 28, 2017, said the app had become available in Japan and more than 150 countries and regions. The official posts establish the initial five-country rollout and the later threshold, but do not give the exact date when availability first exceeded 120 countries.

How did Messenger Lite compare with Messenger?
| Comparison | Messenger Lite | Messenger |
|---|---|---|
| Intended use | Basic Android phones, limited storage, and slower-than-average connections, according to Meta’s 2016 launch post. | The launch post positions Lite in relation to Messenger but does not specify Messenger’s intended hardware or network conditions. |
| Features described | Text messaging, photo and link sharing, and receiving stickers, as described at launch. | The launch post does not give a corresponding full feature list for Messenger. |
| App size | Under 10 MB, according to Meta’s 2016 launch announcement. | Not stated in the cited launch announcement. |
These are the points Meta documented for the launch, not a current technical comparison. The announcement does not report benchmark tests or measured data savings, so its design goals should not be read as quantified performance claims.

No. In August 2023, Meta confirmed that Android Messenger Lite users were being directed to Messenger or Facebook Lite, and that the standalone app would no longer be available after September 18, 2023. TechCrunch reported the confirmation in its August 24, 2023 coverage.
