Which app fits your audience and sharing habits?
Choose Facebook Reels for an existing Facebook audience
If the people you want to reach already follow, friend or interact with you on Facebook, Reels let you publish short video within that broader social environment. Meta describes Facebook as a home for short, long and Live video, and announced that new video uploads would be shared as Reels during a gradual rollout. That is the company’s description of the product, not evidence that Reels will reach more people.
Choose TikTok for its separate short-video environment
TikTok may suit you if you want to make and watch short videos in its own app and creator environment rather than extend activity on Facebook. Which app will reach more of your intended viewers is not established by the official materials cited here; consider where your actual audience spends time instead of assuming either platform guarantees discovery.
How publishing and privacy differ
Facebook: check each Reel’s audience
Facebook lets you set a default audience for future Reels and change the audience on an individual one. Public and Friends are among the available choices. If you share a Reel from Instagram, Facebook may use a default audience tied to whether the Instagram account is private or public. Meta’s June 17, 2025 announcement said the company was simplifying video publication so new uploads would be shared as Reels, without length or format restrictions, in a gradual rollout to profiles and Pages worldwide. Rollout and available controls may vary by account. Meta’s announcement also describes a unification of default privacy settings across Feed posts and Reels while keeping audience controls.
TikTok: settings depend on age and location
TikTok’s Help Center describes privacy defaults and feature restrictions for users under 18, and says settings can depend on age and local law. Because those rules are jurisdiction-specific and can change, check the current TikTok guidance for under-18 accounts for the relevant account and location rather than treating one set of rules as universal.

Safety and family controls for younger users
TikTok describes Family Pairing, which gives families controls over some teen settings, along with creator-facing moderation and content tools. These feature descriptions explain what TikTok says it offers; they do not prove that one platform produces better safety outcomes overall.
- Family Pairing: TikTok says parents and guardians can use it to manage some settings for teen accounts.
- Creator Care Mode: TikTok describes a tool for filtering unwanted comments.
- Content Check Lite: TikTok describes a pre-publication check indicating whether content is likely to be ineligible for the For You feed; it is not a guarantee of distribution.
- Creator Inbox: TikTok lists this among its creator tools.
For the EEA, Switzerland and UK, TikTok’s January 16, 2026 announcement says teen accounts have more than 50 preset safety, privacy and security features, direct messaging requires users to be at least 16, and accounts for teens under 18 have a 60-minute screen-time limit set by default and receive no notifications after bedtime. These are TikTok’s stated rules for that region and described experience, not a universal policy or an independent comparison of safety. Creator tools and earning money
Facebook monetization requires access
Meta said on March 18, 2026, that Facebook Content Monetization pays eligible creators for Reels and other eligible content formats, but the program was invite-only. Meta said creators could express interest in the Facebook mobile app by opening Professional Dashboard → Monetization → Content Monetization and completing the interest form. Expressing interest is not the same as being invited or qualifying.
Meta reported nearly $3 billion in creator payouts for 2025 and said 60% of its total creator payout went to Reels. Those are company-reported platform totals, not an estimate of what an individual creator can earn or evidence of personal eligibility. Details are in Meta’s March 2026 announcement.

Do not choose on the basis of an assumed TikTok payout
The official TikTok sources cited here do not establish current monetization programs, payout rates or eligibility thresholds. Those details can vary by location and change over time, so verify the terms shown for your account before making income part of your decision. There is no supported like-for-like payout comparison here.

- Start with your intended viewers. If they are already active in your Facebook network, try Reels; if the separate TikTok environment better matches the audience you want, try TikTok. Neither choice guarantees reach.
- Decide how broadly each post should be seen. On Facebook, review the default and per-Reel audience, especially when cross-posting from Instagram. On TikTok, check privacy rules that apply to the user’s age and location.
- For a teen account, review the actual settings together. TikTok describes Family Pairing and age-specific settings, but the applicable controls depend on region and age.
- If earning is a goal, verify access first. Check whether Facebook Content Monetization is available to you in Professional Dashboard. For TikTok, confirm current in-app program terms and eligibility; do not rely on an unverified payout headline.
- Test your workflow before committing. Try the editing, publishing and moderation tools you expect to use, then decide which app fits your routine. Tools and rollouts can differ by account, age and geography.

Meta’s and TikTok’s announcements and help pages describe their own features and policies. They do not establish that one app has better recommendations, greater organic reach or superior safety outcomes overall.
