SecurityWeek reported that Facebook paid the researcher $10,000 and fixed the flaw less than two weeks after receiving notice. The report also stressed that reliable extraction of sensitive data was not demonstrated.
What was the Facebook Messenger GIF vulnerability?
SecurityWeek’s March 11, 2019 account describes a flaw in how Messenger for Android processed corrupt GIF files. During testing, the researcher, named as Laxman Muthiyah Lukyanenka in the report, observed distorted image output containing data from an image previously uploaded by a different user. SecurityWeek characterized the behavior as a random memory exposure issue. SecurityWeek’s report is the available incident account.
This finding should be understood narrowly: it concerned image data appearing during corrupted-GIF handling. The report does not establish that Messenger conversations, all images, or user accounts were broadly accessible.
How could a GIF reveal another user’s image?
The reported sequence was that a malformed or corrupt GIF caused Messenger’s processing to render distorted image data, and some of that data matched an image uploaded earlier by another user. That points to unintended memory disclosure during image handling; it does not, by itself, establish a method for choosing whose data appeared or retrieving a complete file on demand.

SecurityWeek explicitly noted that Lukyanenka did not prove sensitive data could be extracted reliably. The available account does not verify the precise technical root cause, affected app version, or exact deployment date, so those details should not be inferred.
Why did Facebook pay $10,000?
SecurityWeek reported that Facebook awarded the researcher a $10,000 bug bounty for the finding. The same account says Facebook released a fix less than two weeks after notification in late February 2018. These amount and timing details come from the secondary report; an incident-specific Facebook advisory or original researcher disclosure is not established here.

How this fits Facebook’s bug bounty program
Facebook’s 2020 overview of its broader vulnerability-reward program said that, during its first 10 years, more than 50,000 researchers had joined and around 1,500 researchers from 107 countries had received a bounty. Those are program-wide figures, not statistics about the GIF issue. Meta’s program overview describes the broader initiative.
The overview’s Security Engineering Manager Dan Gurfinkel said the program helps the company detect and fix issues faster and that rewards encourage high-quality security research. This provides context for why a reported vulnerability could receive a bounty; it does not independently verify the Messenger incident’s specific award or technical details.
