For a budget PC upgrade, an internal M.2 NVMe SSD is usually the better choice for a boot or application drive—if your computer supports it. Choose an external SSD when portability, backups, or avoiding an internal installation matters more. There is no universal price winner: compare equal-capacity drives available in your region and confirm compatibility before buying.

Which type is better for your upgrade?

Start with what you want the SSD to do. An internal drive connects directly to the PC and is generally the more suitable option for running the operating system and applications. An external drive connects over USB, so you can carry it between computers or use it for storage and backups without opening the case.

Priority Better fit What to check
Booting Windows or running applications Internal SSD, usually M.2 NVMe when supported Available slot or bay, drive protocol and size, and NVMe boot support if applicable
Portable storage or moving files between PCs External SSD The PC’s USB data specification, cable, and drive’s connection limits
Using a spare SSD for backups or transfers Existing SSD in a compatible USB enclosure Whether the enclosure supports SATA or NVMe, as appropriate
Basic use on a system that supports SATA 2.5-inch or M.2 SATA SSD Protocol support, connections, and local price for the same capacity

An external SSD can be worthwhile for a desktop, but it is not simply an internal boot drive with a different plug. Its strongest advantages are portability and simpler installation; for a system-drive upgrade, the internal option is usually more direct.

Check compatibility before comparing prices

“M.2” describes a drive’s physical form factor, not a guarantee that it uses a particular protocol. M.2 drives may use SATA or PCIe/NVMe, and a system that supports one may not support the other. Kingston advises checking for an open 2.5-inch bay for SATA SSDs or an M.2 slot for NVMe or SATA SSDs, but the exact support depends on the computer: Kingston’s SSD compatibility guidance.

  1. Identify the exact PC or motherboard model. Use its specifications or manual rather than relying on the connector’s appearance.
  2. Confirm the drive connection and protocol. For M.2, check the supported physical size and whether the slot accepts SATA, PCIe/NVMe, or both. For a 2.5-inch SATA SSD, check that there is a bay, SATA data connection, and SATA power connection. MSI’s storage-installation guidance describes the SATA data and power connections.
  3. Check boot support if you will install or migrate the operating system. Some older boards may not boot from NVMe; verify this for your model before buying. PC Gamer’s NVMe guide discusses the distinction between interface performance and system support.
  4. For an external drive, check the USB port’s data specification. A USB-C-shaped port does not by itself tell you its data rate. Use the cable intended for the SSD and check the PC’s port specifications. ASUS explains USB 3.2 bandwidth limits.

Installation errors can cause detection or boot problems, and incorrect hardware installation can damage components. MSI recommends consulting model-specific specifications and compatibility information before installation.

How much faster is an external SSD?

External speed is limited by the entire connection: the SSD, its enclosure, the cable, and the host USB port. ASUS lists theoretical interface ceilings of 5 Gb/s for USB 3.2 Gen 1, 10 Gb/s for Gen 2, and 20 Gb/s for Gen 2×2. Those are bandwidth ceilings, not guaranteed sustained file-transfer speeds; a slower component in the chain can limit the result.

  • MORE COMPATIBLE THAN EVER: 870 EVO has been compatibility tested for major host systems and applications, including chipsets, motherboards, NAS, and video recording devices. Interface- SATA 6GB/s, compatible with SATA 3GB/s and SATA 1.5GB/s interfaces

Internal interface figures also need context. PC Gamer gives theoretical limits of 600 MB/s for SATA, 4,000 MB/s for PCIe 3.0, and 8,000 MB/s for PCIe 4.0. These are interface limits, not promises that a particular drive will sustain those transfer rates. Actual performance depends on the drive and system, so do not choose by the largest advertised sequential-speed number alone.

SATA can still be a sensible budget choice for ordinary office work when the PC supports it and the price is compelling. Kingston says SATA 3.0 supports up to 600 MB/s across supported 2.5-inch, mSATA, and M.2 SATA form factors. Check the protocol as well as the form factor: an M.2 SATA drive is not automatically compatible with an M.2 NVMe-only slot.

Which option is cheaper?

The available price examples do not establish a fair winner. In a PC Gamer roundup dated October 2, 2026, a 1 TB Adata SE880 external SSD was listed at $149.99, while a 1 TB Biwin Black Opal NV7400 internal PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD was listed at £124.49. These prices are in different currencies, may change or disappear, and are not a like-for-like comparison within one market: PC Gamer’s roundup.

For your own budget, compare the same capacity and check local prices, including any enclosure you need. A low-cost internal drive is not a bargain if your PC cannot use it; an external drive may cost more but avoid installation or serve several computers.

Can you reuse an SSD in a USB enclosure?

Yes, if the enclosure matches the SSD’s interface and physical format. A compatible enclosure can turn a spare SATA or NVMe drive into portable storage for backups or file transfers. Intel notes that adapters can affect performance and may change whether BIOS or management tools detect the drive: Intel’s storage-adapter guidance.

Reusing a drive this way does not make it equivalent to a directly installed boot drive. Treat it as an external-storage solution unless your PC and setup specifically support booting from that external connection.

Make the choice

  • Choose an internal M.2 NVMe SSD for a boot or application drive when the PC has a compatible slot and supports NVMe booting where needed.
  • Choose an external SSD when portability, backup use, or avoiding internal installation is more important than a direct internal connection.
  • Consider SATA for a compatible older system or basic workload if the same-capacity local price makes sense.
  • Consider an enclosure if you already own a spare SSD and need portable storage rather than a straightforward internal boot-drive upgrade.
