A cloud command-line interface (CLI) lets you inspect and manage resources from a terminal or scripts. The AWS CLI, Azure CLI (az), and Google Cloud CLI (gcloud) serve different providers, identities, APIs, and resource models. Start with the CLI for the cloud account and services you need to operate; there is no universal winner.
What does a cloud CLI do?
A provider’s CLI translates terminal commands into operations against that provider’s cloud services. You can use one interactively to inspect resources or include it in scripts to automate repeatable tasks. Each tool speaks to its own provider’s APIs and uses provider-specific names and command syntax, so the commands are not interchangeable.
CLIs can make changes to live infrastructure. Before running a command that modifies resources, check which identity and target environment it will use. Depending on the provider and command, that context may include an AWS account, profile, and region; an Azure account and subscription; or a Google account and project.
Which cloud CLI belongs to each provider?
AWS CLI
The AWS Command Line Interface provides terminal access to AWS service APIs and administration functions. AWS documents both interactive shell use and scripting. Start with the AWS CLI v2 User Guide and its official installation guidance. The documentation distinguishes AWS distribution points from third-party packages; follow the official guidance for your operating system.

Azure CLI
Azure CLI, invoked as az, manages Azure resources through interactive commands and scripts. Microsoft lists Windows, Linux, and macOS installation options, as well as Docker and Azure Cloud Shell. See the Azure CLI overview and installation instructions for the current choices.
Google Cloud CLI
Google Cloud CLI, invoked as gcloud, manages Google Cloud resources and services, including through scriptable workflows. Its installation and initialization flow is separate from the other providers’. Start with the Google Cloud CLI overview, then consult the installation guide and initialization guide.

How should you choose between them?
Choose according to the provider, services, and operating environment involved—not a generic ranking. Official overview pages describe different capabilities but do not establish a neutral performance comparison.

Also compare supported operating systems and shells, identity integration, extension or component requirements, scripting conventions, and the automation your team already maintains. If your work spans providers, learn each CLI needed for its own services rather than assuming one tool can manage every cloud.

How do you install a cloud CLI?
Installation depends on the provider and operating system, and supported versions can change. Use the linked vendor installation page for the current commands and supported methods rather than copying an old command from an unrelated tutorial.
- Choose the provider and environment. Decide whether you will install locally, use a supported container, or work in the provider’s Cloud Shell.
- Follow that provider’s official installation guide. For AWS, use an official AWS distribution point and select the method for your operating system. Microsoft documents OS, Docker, and Cloud Shell options for Azure CLI. Google provides its own installation and initialization sequence.
- Initialize the CLI and identity. Follow the provider-specific sign-in or credential setup. Do not treat local human sign-in and unattended workload authentication as the same procedure.
- Confirm the target before acting. Check the active identity and account, subscription, project, profile, or region as relevant before running commands that change resources.
How should you authenticate?
Authentication depends both on the provider and on whether a person is using the CLI interactively or an application is running unattended. Follow the relevant provider’s current security documentation and choose credentials for that use case.

AWS CLI credentials
AWS documents multiple credential mechanisms, including command-line options, environment variables, and role-based mechanisms, with precedence rules that affect which credentials a command uses. For applicable human access, AWS recommends short-term credentials. Review the AWS CLI configuration and credential documentation before setting up access, especially when more than one credential source may be present.
Google Cloud user and workload authentication
For local human use, Google documents gcloud auth login. Google Cloud Shell instead uses the Google Cloud console session, so it does not need gcloud auth login. Workloads have separate authentication options, including credential-file approaches; consult Google’s authentication documentation to select an appropriate method. Do not make a service-account key file or long-lived credential the casual default.

Azure and cloud-hosted shells
Microsoft offers Azure Cloud Shell as an alternative to installing Azure CLI locally. AWS also offers CloudShell. The relevant provider documentation should guide sign-in and access setup for the shell or local environment you use; an interactive developer login should not be assumed suitable for unattended automation.

Begin with an operation that reports context or lists resources, rather than making a change. These examples illustrate provider-specific syntax; confirm each command and its required permissions in the current vendor reference before use.
- AWS:
aws sts get-caller-identityreports the identity represented by the credentials in use. AWS documents this operation in its STS command reference. - Azure:
az account showdisplays details for the active Azure account context. See the Azure account command reference. - Google Cloud:
gcloud config get-value projectreports the project set in the active gcloud configuration. See the gcloud configuration reference.
These checks answer different provider-specific questions; none makes their account, project, or subscription models equivalent. Use the output to verify your context before moving on to commands that affect resources.
