Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE) became generally available on July 1, 2025, in calendar Q3. For administrators planning an upgrade, the key dividing line is the starting version: Exchange Server 2019 CU14 or CU15 supports a direct in-place upgrade to SE RTM; earlier versions require a legacy upgrade or migration route.
When did Exchange Server Subscription Edition launch?
Microsoft announced general availability on July 1, 2025. The Exchange Team’s launch announcement confirms the release date: Exchange Server Subscription Edition is now available.
What was included in the SE RTM release?
Microsoft describes SE RTM as code-equivalent to Exchange Server 2019 CU15, with three differences: the Setup license agreement, product name, and build number. Microsoft says new features begin with Exchange SE CU1, so RTM should not be treated as a major feature release. See Microsoft’s Exchange SE upgrade guidance.
Which Exchange versions can upgrade directly?
| Starting version | Path to SE RTM | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange Server 2019 CU14 or CU15 | Microsoft supports a direct in-place upgrade. | Install the latest applicable cumulative update and follow current deployment guidance. |
| Exchange Server versions earlier than 2019 | No supported direct in-place upgrade; first use a legacy upgrade to Exchange 2019 CU14 or CU15, or a supported legacy migration route. | Do not assume Setup permitting a step means Microsoft supports it. |
| Exchange Server 2016 | Requires a legacy upgrade or migration rather than a direct in-place upgrade. | Review current coexistence requirements and the supported-version matrix before planning. |
Microsoft’s upgrade instructions and system requirements should be checked against the source environment and target deployment. Supported paths and coexistence conditions are version-specific.

How Exchange SE servicing and support work
Exchange SE follows Microsoft’s Modern Lifecycle Policy rather than a fixed end-of-support date. Microsoft’s launch announcement says support has no fixed end date while customers keep configurations up to date; that is conditional on maintaining supported configurations, not a guarantee for unpatched or unsupported systems. Check Microsoft’s Exchange Server Subscription Edition lifecycle page and current product guidance for applicable servicing requirements.

Microsoft’s July 2025 licensing announcement says Exchange SE server products require active Software Assurance or cloud subscription licenses for all users and devices that access them. Eligibility and costs depend on the customer’s agreement and region, so there is no single universal price to apply. Exchange has Standard and Enterprise server editions. Microsoft documents these mounted-database limits:
| Server edition | Maximum mounted databases per server |
|---|---|
| Standard | 5 |
| Enterprise | 100 |
The server product key establishes the edition. See Microsoft’s Exchange editions and versions guidance.

What to check before choosing an upgrade route
- Identify the exact Exchange version and cumulative update currently installed.
- Confirm whether Microsoft supports a direct in-place upgrade from that starting point or requires a legacy upgrade or migration.
- Check current coexistence requirements for the source and target versions.
- Verify Software Assurance or cloud-subscription licensing eligibility for every accessing user and device under your organization’s agreement.
- Plan to meet SE’s ongoing servicing requirements and keep the configuration supported.
- Determine whether Standard’s five mounted databases per server are sufficient or Enterprise’s 100-database limit is needed.
